    Mornings on the Mall
    Monday, December 30, 2019
Hosts: Vince Coglianese and LT Col. Tony Shaffer
    Executive Producer: Heather Hunter
5am – A/B/C Person Opens Fire In Texas Church — And Multiple Armed  Congregants Rush The Shooter
At least two people have been killed and one more is in critical condition after a shooter opened fire in a Texas church Sunday morning, according to reports.
The Dallas Morning News reported that the entire incident was initially broadcast on a live stream of the service at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas. The video — which has since been taken down — showed one person standing up just as communion ended, removing a long gun from his coat, and firing twice before at least one person shot back.
A state law went into effect in September 2017 that allows churches to have armed volunteer security. Licensed handgun owners may legally bring firearms into a place of worship as long as the church allows it, and a law passed earlier this year requires churches to give notice to their congregations if they want to ban guns.
5am – D Taliban council agrees to cease-fire in Afghanistan (AP News) The Taliban’s ruling council agreed Sunday to a temporary cease-fire in Afghanistan, providing a window in which a peace agreement with the United States can be signed, officials from the insurgent group said. They didn’t say when it would begin.  A cease-fire had been demanded by Washington before any peace agreement could be signed. A peace deal would allow the U.S. to bring home its troops from Afghanistan and end its 18-year military engagement there, America’s longest. The White House said it would have no comment. The U.S. wants any deal to include a promise from the Taliban that Afghanistan would not be used as a base by terrorist groups. The U.S. currently has an estimated 12,000 troops in Afghanistan.
5am – E Rep. John Lewis diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer
6am – A/B/C Suspect in Hanukkah stabbing at NY rabbi's home pleads not guilty to attempted murder charges
The man accused of entering the home of a New York rabbi and stabbing five people with a machete, in a horrifying Saturday night attack labeled an anti-Semitic act of "domestic terrorism," pleaded not guilty to multiple charges Sunday.
Wearing a white jumpsuit, Grafton E. Thomas, 37, of Greenwood Lake, Y., appeared at the Ramapo Town Hall in Ramapo, N.Y., Sunday morning, facing five counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary.
Bail was set at $5 million.
Police said Thomas allegedly entered the home of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg in Monsey, a suburb north of New York City, during a Hanukkah celebration -- the latest in a string of anti-Semitic incidents in recent weeks that included beatings of Jewish people in the streets of New York City and a massacre at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City, J.
Thomas sped away from the stabbing scene but later was captured in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. He had blood all over his clothing and smelled of bleach, according to prosecutors.
6am – D INTERVIEW: Andy Pollin -  longtime D.C. sports news veteran and co-host on the Carol Maloney Show on ESPN 630
    Topic: Redskin’s update
Ron Rivera is meeting with the Washington Redskins on Monday about the team's head coaching vacancy, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Bruce Allen fired as Redskins team president after 10 seasons with the franchise
6am – E Chuck Todd touts 'fascinating' letter mocking Christian Trump supporters who believe in Noah’s ark
6am – F Don Imus, Legendary 'Imus in the Morning' Host, Dies at 79
7am – A INTERVIEW: Joe diGenova - legal analyst and former US Attorney to the District of Columbia
TOPIC: Joe Biden backtracks, says he would comply with impeachment subpoena
7am – B/C Statement By Washington Redskins Owner Dan Snyder: "As this season concludes, Bruce Allen has been relieved of his duties as President of the Washington Redskins and is no longer with the organization. Like our passionate fan base, I recognize we have not lived up to the high standards set by great Redskins teams, coaches and players who have come before us. As we reevaluate our team leadership, culture and process for winning football games, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead to renew our singular focus and purpose of bringing championship football back to Washington D.C."
7am – D Washington Post praises Ralph Northam post-blackface scandal, says they were 'wrong' to call for resignation (Fox News) The Washington Post is facing criticism for its praise of Gov. Ralph Northam, D-Virginia, over his handling of the blackface scandal, with one of its columnists now saying they were "wrong" to demand his ousting. Last February, Northam made headlines after it was discovered that a racist photograph featuring a man in blackface and another man in a KKK hood was printed on his 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook page.  However, the Post appears to have now reversed course. "The history of U.S. politics is full of second chances- of scandal-scarred, disgraced and irredeemable public figures staging improbable comebacks - but few back-from-the-dead narratives have been as swift and sure-footed as the one Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has managed this year," the Washington Post editorial board began its piece on Friday evening. The Post praised the embattled Democrat for "refocusing" his governorship "on racial equity and reconciliation in what amounted to an extended act of public contrition and atonement," which it claimed was "astonishingly effective" on his political rehabilitation as well as his polling.
7am – E Barack Obama shares his favorite movies and TV shows of 2019
    8am – A INTERVIEW: Trevor Matich- WMAL’s Redskins Analyst
TOPIC: The key moments from Redskins’ 47-16 season-ending loss to the Cowboys
Ron Rivera is meeting with the Washington Redskins on Monday about the team's head coaching vacancy, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Bruce Allen fired as Redskins team president after 10 seasons with the franchise
8am – B/C Joe Biden Says He Will Not Comply With Potential Senate Impeachment Trial Subpoena (Daily Caller) / Joe Biden Quickly Backtracks His Senate Subpoena Comments
Speaking to the Des Moines Register’s editorial board on Friday, the Democratic presidential front runner doubled down after being asked about a similar contention he made to NPR in early December.
“Do you stand by your earlier statements that you wouldn’t comply if you were subpoenaed to testify in an impeachment trial before the Senate,” a board member asked.
“Correct, and the reason I wouldn’t is because it’s all designed to deal with Trump doing what he’s done his whole life, trying to take the focus off him,” Biden said, calling any suggestions that he do so “a diversion” from Trump.
“Doesn’t that position you as if you’re defying a subpoena, putting yourself above the law?” asked the Register
“Well, look, the grounds for them to call me would be overwhelmingly specious, so I don’t anticipate that happening anyway,” he responded. “But what it would do if I voluntarily just said let me go and make my case. What are you going to cover? You guys are going to cover for three weeks anything that I said. And he’s going to get away. You guys buy into it all the time. Not a joke … Doesn’t mean I shouldn’t testify if you thought I should, but think what it’s about. It’s all about what he does all the time, his entire career. Take the focus off. This guy violated the Constitution. He said it in the driveway of the White House. He acknowledged he asked for help.”

GOP predicts bipartisan acquittal at Trump impeachment trial
Trump calls Dems 'Liars!' for deeming him security threat – and then pausing impeachment
Late Senator John McCain provided disgraced former FBI chief James Comey with five separate reports from Christopher Steele that the FBI didn’t previously possess related to unsubstantiated allegations of collusion between Russia and President Trump’s 2016 campaign, the Justice Department’s recent Inspector General report revealed.
Andrew McCabe, the ousted deputy director of the FBI, says the Trump administration is withholding evidence related to his lawsuit. McCabe sued the FBI and the Department of Justice after he was fired in March 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions just two days before he was set to retire.
6am – A/B/C Donald Trump Jr. Tells Story of Woman Yelling at Him in NYC Restaurant (Breitbart) Donald Trump Jr. spoke at Turning Point USA’s annual Student Action Summit on Sunday in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he told the young conservative attendees a story of a woman who approached him in a New York City restaurant and began yelling. But what happened next was not at all what Trump Jr. had been expecting. “I’m at this restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan,” explained Trump Jr., “and I’m sitting there for 90 minutes being like, ‘Okay, who’s it going to be?’ Meaning, which jerk is going to go for their Instagram moment to try to do something ridiculous or insulting — and so, being a fighter, you sort of anticipate it.”Bottom of Form“This old lady gets up, right in my face,” said Trump Jr. “The whole restaurant is now looking, and I’m thinking, ‘Great, now I just gotta take it.'” Trump Jr. went on to tell what the woman said next: “You guys have the biggest — she used the English version — cajones in the world! And I love it! You guys don’t take any crap from these guys. You guys give it back. I see the results, and I’ve been a life-long New Yorker and Democrat for my entire life!”

7am – B/C Embattled union honchos’ lavish spending exposed: Villas, four-figure dinners, $60,000 cigar bill
7am – D Democratic insiders: Bernie could win the nomination (Politico) For months, the Vermont senator was written off by Democratic Party insiders as a candidate with a committed but narrow base who was too far left to win the primary. Elizabeth Warren had skyrocketed in the polls and seemed to be leaving him behind in the race to be progressive voters’ standard-bearer in 2020. But in the past few weeks, something has changed. In private conversations and on social media, Democratic officials, political operatives and pundits are reconsidering Sanders’ chances. “It may have been inevitable that eventually you would have two candidates representing each side of the ideological divide in the party. A lot of smart people I’ve talked to lately think there’s a very good chance those two end up being Biden and Sanders,” said David Brock, a longtime Hillary Clinton ally who founded a pro-Clinton super PAC in the 2016 campaign. “They’ve both proven to be very resilient.”
7am – E INTERVIEW: Larry Michael -  Voice of the Washington Redskins
TOPIC: Washington Redskins vs Dallas Cowboys in Dallas Sunday 4:25pm
8am – A INTERVIEW: Luke Rosiak - Investigative reporter for the Daily Caller
TOPIC: Democrats Seek To Outlaw Suburban, Single-Family House Zoning, Calling It Racist And Bad For The Environment
8am – B/C Skiing star Lindsey Vonn proposes to fiancé PK Subban: 'Men should get engagement rings too' (The Hill) Former skiing star Lindsey Vonn announced on Christmas that she had proposed to her fiancé, New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban, in a “non traditional" move so that each of them could have an engagement ring. Subban proposed in August with an emerald ring because it is his birthstone and her favorite color, according to an interview with Vogue. But the Olympic gold medalist on Wednesday wrote that “women aren’t the only ones who should get engagement rings!”
8am – D 21State Attorneys General Ask SCOTUS To Strike Down MD Concealed Carry Law (Bearing Arms) While many people lament the requirement for concealed carry permits in many states, and rightly so, perhaps the most egregious infringement on our Second Amendment rights are those states which require people to show cause to be granted a permit. These are even worse than simple “may issue” requirements, though the two go hand in hand. Now, it seems the Supreme Court may be considering a case about the constitutionality of these measures. In fact, 21 state attorneys general have written to the court asking it to strike down such an unconstitutional law.
8am – E  Michigan woman's Secret Santa is Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates (Fox  Business) Gates sent Shelby an enormous box full of gifts, but most generous of all was a donation to the American Heart Association in the name of Shelby's mother, who passed away 10 days before her wedding.

    5am – D/E IMPEACHMENT NEWS:
Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, says she was “disturbed” to hear Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell say there would be "total coordination" between the White House and the Senate over the upcoming presidential impeachment trial.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reworked the lyrics for the song “Twelve Days of Christmas”, replacing the iconic “Partridge in a Pear Tree” and “my true love love gave to me” with “on the first day of Christmas Congress gave to me impeachment and divided country.”
FISA court review order leaves out key FBI players implicated in Horowitz report
6am – A/B/C Democrats Seek To Outlaw Suburban, Single-Family House Zoning, Calling It Racist And Bad For The Environment (Daily Caller)
Virginia House Del. Ibraheem Samirah introduced a bill that would override local zoning officials to permit multi-family housing in every neighborhood, changing the character of quiet suburbs.
Oregon passed a similar bill, following moves by cities such as Minneapolis; Austin, Texas; and Seattle.
Proponents say urban lifestyles are better for the environment and that suburbs are bastions of racial segregation.
6am – D Hunter Biden is subject of criminal probes, says PI firm hinting at more incriminating details (Fox News) Hunter Biden, the 49-year-old son of former Vice President Joe Biden, has been dodging discovery requests in connection with a paternity case in Arkansas, and is "the subject of more than one criminal investigation involving fraud, money laundering and a counterfeiting scheme," a private investigation firm claimed this week in a bizarre court filing. In addition, the Florida-based D&A Investigations told Fox News that its investigators have found that the intelligence community whistleblower at the center of the Democrats' impeachment effort against President Trump accompanied Joe Biden when he traveled to Ukraine in early 2016 and, by his own admission, pressured the country's government to fire its top prosecutor by threatening to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid.
6am – E Notre Dame rector sees 'maybe' 50 percent chance cathedral can be saved (AP) The rector of Notre Dame Cathedral says the Paris landmark is still so fragile that there’s a “50% chance” the structure might not be saved, because scaffolding installed before this year’s fire is threatening the vaults of the Gothic monument. Monsignor Patrick Chauvet said restoration work isn’t likely to begin until 2021 — and described his “heartache” that Notre Dame couldn’t hold Christmas services this year, for the first time since the French Revolution.
6am – F Prosecutors: Avenatti was $15M in debt during Nike extortion (The Hill) Lawyer Michael Avenatti was more than $15 million in debt when he tried to extort as much as $25 million from Nike, prosecutors alleged in court papers filed late Tuesday. Prosecutors said they will demonstrate at trial that Avenatti owed “conservatively, in excess of $15 million" and that evidence will show that he had "extraordinary indebtedness, and thus the need and motive to quickly generate substantial sums of money at the time when he engaged in the charged conduct,”
7am – A/B/C Americans’ View Of Higher Education Takes A Major Drop (Forbes) Only half of Americans now believe that a college education is “very important,” a dramatic decrease from the 70% who said it was very important in 2013. And 13% of adults believe that higher education is “not too important,” more than twice the percentage (6%) in 2013... Positive perceptions of higher education have been declining in recent years, but the decrease is most noticeable among young adults—a 33 percentage point drop. According to Gallup, only 4% of adults aged 18 to 29 now believe higher education to be “very important.”
7am – D National debt disappears as 2020 campaign issue – but it keeps growing (Fox News) Almost a decade after out-of-control spending and borrowing fueled the Tea Party revolution in a historic midterm election, no major presidential candidates from either party seem interested in the national debt that now stands at more than $23 trillion, leaving every American citizen owing almost $70,000. Meanwhile, the federal deficit—or the annual budget shortfall—is more than $1 trillion.

8am – A INTERVIEW: Henry Rogers – Investigative Reporter from the Daily Caller Topic: Former Hawaii Governor Says Tulsi Gabbard Should Resign
8am – B/C  'Makes me feel like I have hope': Strangers write holiday cards to the homeless (WJLA) "We make greetings cards, beautiful cards, funny cards just like any other place it's just that our card makers are folks who have experienced homelessness," says Sandridge. Sandridge also gives back, allotting 15 percent of card sales to the designer and another 10 percent to a charity of their choice. Sandridge adds, "So we've been collecting cards for about a month." His idea here was this holiday season to have some of his card makers and DC residents pen cards for people who don't have a permanent home. He's spending Christmas week delivering nearly 1000 cards to shelters throughout the region. One such center that passed out cards was A-SPAN, a homeless services center in Arlington, Virginia. "It's a time when you are not surrounded by your family it's easy to start feeling alone. And if we could change that that would just be very special in all the lives of folks we're hopefully going to touch."
8am – D Nonstop violence as Baltimore nears record homicide rate (AP) Baltimore could wrap up 2019 with its highest per-capita homicide rate on record as killings of adults and minors alike for drugs, retribution, money or no clear reason continue to add up and city officials appear unable to stop the violence. Police recorded 338 homicides as of Tuesday, following a week of relentless gunfire that saw eight people shot — three of them fatally — in one day and nine others — one fatally — another day. That total is up from 309 in 2018 and four shy of the 342 killings tallied in 2017 and 2015, the year when the city’s homicide rate suddenly spiked.
8am – E  President Trump, Melania Trump share holiday video: 'We wish everyone a joyous and merry Christmas'
