  • Breaking Down Investing Barriers, with Maxime Carmignac

🌟 Maxime Carmignac is the Managing Director of Carmignac UK - an asset management firm with €41.7bn of assets under management.

💸 Today, we talk about asset management, the ways in which women investors need to empower each other, tackling gender inequalities, and more.

1/ Women are holding an increasing amount of money, yet they're still poorly addressed by the financial community, which is something Maxime is keen to change.

2/ Carmignac is a company owned by both the Carmignac family and their employees, and Maxime explains what asset management is and what it’s like to run a family business.

3/ While women are less assertive than men, they also tend to focus on longer-term investment gains rather than short-term wins, and are more concerned with sustainable investing, so Maxime offers her investment advice to women as well as the importance of ESG.

  • 7 Investing myths debunked | Money Hotline #15

💸 Investing is key to building financial independence and reach long term goals. When you invest over a long period, you want your money to outpace inflation (the price of goods and services is increasing every year) and benefit from compound growth. While it’s essential to have ‘rainy day’ cash savings, playing it safe by stashing your money in low-interest-rate savings accounts is actually risky because that money will lose value over time.

    💥 Today on The Wallet:

1️⃣Investing can feel complex, laden with alienating jargon and sounds like something only others are good at – but I explain why this isn’t the case.

2️⃣Before you start investing, it’s vital you ask yourself how long you’re willing to invest for. The longer your timeframe, the more volatility you should be able to deal with because you’d have more time to recover from any lows. Start small and invest regularly.

3️⃣I explain why asking questions and giving yourself praise are super important to everyone’s investing journey.

  • How to make the most of what you’ve got, with Alex Stedman from The Frugality

🌟Alex Stedman started The Frugality in 2012, after spending 15 years working in the fashion media industry. With over a quarter of a million followers, she’s a mum-of-two offering accessible tips on smart spending and saving up for things you really love.

🌳We talk about building a sustainable business you love, tips on managing your finances, the challenges of being a freelancer and a parent, and how to stand up for yourself and try not to please everyone.

1/ A lot of people think that being frugal is cheap. It's not. It's getting the most enjoyment out of everything, making things last, and really understanding and appreciating the value of things.

2/ Growing her company very organically, it's now about getting to the next level and delegating work to have a higher earning capacity.

3/ Sometimes we use the term “maternity leave”, as this general broad term, but for a freelancer, it doesn't really exist. It's just time off if you want to take it and not get paid.

☎️ In today’s episode, I answer a question I received on Vestpod’s Instagram: What can you do when you’re feeling stuck about money?

💸 While I would always advise you to find some form of professional help, here are some pointers you can try:

1️⃣ Find a support system, whether just one other person or an entire group. A great place to start could be to talk to a financial professional.

2️⃣ Take control back by setting aside a specific time to know your numbers and check where is your money going.

3️⃣ Creating a budget means tracking and being more mindful about your spending.

  • How to start and raise funding for a truly disruptive business, with Farah Kabir

In 2017, Farah Kabir launched HANX, the sexual wellness brand with women in mind with her childhood friend Sarah. HANX sells a range of products, from their award-winning ultra-thin, vegan, biodegradable condoms to oestrogen-free hormonal contraception. Now stocked online and in Boots, Sainsbury's and other major UK retailers, they are genuinely disrupting the feminine care industry.

⚡Farah is passionate about creating a platform that empowers women to take control of their sexual wellness and pleasure without shame or embarrassment. Before HANX, Farah spent six years working at Goldman Sachs. In this episode, we talk about leaving a secure banking job to launch HANX; the realities of raising money; tips for negotiating with big clients; and the ongoing balancing act of being a founder:

1/ Communication is key while doing investment raises. When you’re open with your team about it, they remind you why you're doing what you're doing and are also there to support you.

2/ Retail sales is quite similar to investment raising: you can't just turn up when you need funds. You need to nurture that relationship with buyers. You’ve got to build that rapport and keep that going.

3/ For anyone that asks about jumping ship from their job and starting their own business, I always say it needs to be a calculated risk. You need to have a buffer for the rainy day when you might be financially strapped.
