  • 326. Parenting Principles: Helping Our Children Live with Generosity

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Instead of just teaching our kids to share, what if we encouraged them to be givers? There’s a powerful shift that happens when we teach our children to look beyond themselves and to think about the joy of giving.

When children face those moments where they don’t want to give up their toy or share their snack, it’s the perfect opportunity for a lesson in perspective. We can ask them to imagine themselves as the one wanting the toy or waiting for a turn.

This simple shift aligns with what we see in Matthew 5:38, where Jesus encourages us to turn the other cheek — a powerful reversal of our natural instincts. This mindset helps our children see beyond their immediate wants and think about the needs of others.

We aren’t just teaching them to share; we’re teaching them to love like Jesus.

  • 325. Parenting Principles: Teaching Our Children to Share

Welcome back to the kitchen table! Bethany is sharing a parent principle that every parent battles: sharing. If you’ve ever watched your kids argue over toys, you know how  challenging this can be. But the reality is, selfishness is bound to show up in your house. And honestly, it shouldn’t surprise us.

As parents, we’re guiding little ones who are just learning what it means to walk with Jesus. They are new to this journey, and we have the privilege of teaching them how to be generous.

In 1 Corinthians 10:24, Paul reminds us, “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” Similarly, Philippians 2 teaches us to put others' needs before our own, while 1 Corinthians 13 calls us to love selflessly. These verses set the stage for how we can approach the concept of sharing with our kids.

So how do we handle it when selfishness rears its head over toys and playtime? Instead of forcing the issue, focus on teaching them to consider the interests of others. When a child chooses to join another’s play willingly, we see generous sharing in action. It’s a choice, not a demand.

Sharing is a tough concept for kids to grasp, but by guiding them with principles from the Gospel, we can help them learn what it looks like to put others first. And in the process, we’re shaping hearts to be more like Jesus.

  • 324. Parenting Principles: How Do I Stop the Tattling

Welcome back to the kitchen table. It’s easy to step in when our kids tattle, ready to fix the problem and make things right. But what if our urge to solve everything is keeping them from learning a valuable skill—resolving conflict on their own?

Bethany used to jump in at the first sign of tattling, sorting out every disagreement between her kids. Instead, she began teaching them a biblical approach to conflict resolution, inspired by Matthew 18:15-17.

Now, when her kids come running to tattle, Bethany gently asks, “Have you talked to them about it?” She encourages them to address the person directly and seek a solution together before involving her. This simple shift has made a big impact and follows God’s call to be peacemakers.

By stepping back, Bethany is helping her kids develop the skills they need to navigate disagreements with patience and love.

  • 323. Parenting Principles: Raising Peacemakers

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Conflict is a natural part of life, but how we handle it can make all the difference. As parents, we have an opportunity to teach our children the importance of resolving conflict in a way that reflects our calling to be peacemakers.

The Gospel challenges us to seek peace, as seen in Romans 12:17-18, which urges us to live at peace with everyone as much as we can. This doesn't mean avoiding conflict altogether but approaching it with the goal of bringing reconciliation. We can teach our children that being a peacemaker starts with love.

When we guide our kids through disagreements, we can encourage them to pause, take a deep breath, and ask themselves: How can I work towards peace in this situation?

Teaching our children to be peacemakers prepares them to navigate life's challenges with grace and love. It equips them with the skills to bridge the gap between hurt and healing, showing the world a glimpse of the gospel in action.

  • 322. Parenting Principles: Teaching Our Children to Be Problem Solvers

Welcome back to the kitchen table. It’s natural to want to jump in and fix our kids' problems. We worry about their decisions and try to steer them toward the best outcomes. But what if our instinct to solve everything is holding them back from learning a powerful skill—problem-solving?

Bethany used to want to solve every problem her kids faced. It felt natural to step in and guide their decisions, but over time, she realized this approach wasn’t helping them grow. Instead of fixing everything, she’s been learning to teach them how to be problem solvers themselves—a lesson God has been showing her.

Bethany is teaching them to turn to God with their struggles, reminding them He’s always with them. She leans on two scriptures for this Isaiah 41:10 and Philippians 4:6.

By stepping back, Bethany helps her kids trust in God’s guidance, knowing He’s the ultimate problem solver. It’s a powerful shift that equips them to handle challenges with faith and confidence.

  • 321. Parenting Principles: Chasing the Why Back to the Heart

Welcome back to the kitchen table. As parents, we often find ourselves in situations where discipline feels like a reaction to behavior we want to correct. But what if we saw these moments as opportunities to go deeper, to chase the “why” behind our child’s actions?

God, in His wisdom, looks at our hearts rather than stopping at our outward behavior. He’s curious about what motivates us, and as parents, we can reflect that same curiosity when guiding our children.

Proverbs 21:2 reminds us that while a person’s actions may seem right in their own eyes, the Lord examines the heart. Jeremiah 17:10 tells us He searches our hearts, looking beyond surface actions.

This is a framework that invites us, as parents, to mirror God’s patience and depth—to not only discipline our children but to seek the heart behind their actions. This is what we mean by “chasing the why.”

  • 320. Parenting Principles: We Don't Exclude

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany shares a guiding principle in her home: inclusion. Rooted in James 2:1, which calls us to show no partiality, Bethany shares how exclusion has no place in her home. Her goal is to raise children who don’t just avoid exclusion but actively work to include others.

Kids naturally want their own space—it's common to hear, “get out of my room” But Bethany encourages her children to look beneath this impulse and ask what’s driving it. Why do they want to exclude? Is it anger, frustration, or something else? These gospel conversations are a way to explore what’s going on in their hearts and to bring those feelings to light.

Building an inclusive family culture takes practice and patience. Bethany teaches her children that while the world often encourages exclusivity, they’re called to be different. Through intentional conversations, ownership, and a commitment to kindness, they’re learning to grow together as a family that values and practices inclusion.

  • 319. Parenting Principles: Studying Your Child

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Today, Bethany explores the challenge of raising children uniquely in the same home. It's common to hear, "that’s not fair" as each child has their own personality, motivations, and struggles.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to “train up a child in the way he should go.” This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; each child requires their own path. Bethany emphasizes that we can’t paint them with one brushstroke. Instead, we must recognize that each child is uniquely gifted and called to different experiences.

It’s our role to create opportunities that cater to their individual needs and talents. Bethany encourages parents to pause and ask God what he thinks about each child. Seeking guidance can give us insight into the unique paths our children are meant to take.

  • 318. Parenting Principles: Prayerfully Seeing Their Giftedness

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany is excited to introduce another important principle: the giftedness of our children. This idea is beautifully rooted in Psalm 139:14, which reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

It’s easy to forget that our children are not all crafted the same; each one is uniquely made with their own gifts and strengths. Bethany reflects on how God has uniquely formed each of her children, guiding her in helping them discover their individual talents and truths.

In her parenting journey, she continually prays and seeks to understand who her children are. It’s a process of discovery, exploring their unique qualities and encouraging them to embrace their gifts.

  • 317. Parenting Principles: Teaching My Child to Work Well

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany shares some of her best parenting principles that come from scripture. These teachings guide her through the beautiful chaos of family life, and she has seen the good that comes from applying them with her children.

One key belief she holds is that work as a parent isn't measured by outcomes but by the effort put in. Colossians 3:23-24 reminds her, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” This perspective keeps her focused on the love and commitment she brings to parenting, not just the results.

She often reminds herself that her children's efforts are what truly matter, not just the results. “In all things, are they putting in the effort?” she asks. Framing conversations around this belief creates a supportive atmosphere where her kids can learn and grow.
