In February 2014, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi rolled out the country's first contraceptive to be implanted under the skin. It prevents pregnancy for three years. Many women jumped at the opportunity. However, many were ignorant about the side effects and procedures. Some women became ill and had to have the implants removed. Others encountered difficulties after three years when they wanted to have the implant removed. Some family planning clinics that inserted them now no longer offer the service, leaving the women confused about the next step and how it could affect their health.
