Burnout is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion that often occurs as a result of prolonged stress. It can interfere with your ability to perform physical activities, as well as impact your social and mental wellbeing. Fortunately, understanding the physiology of burnout is the first step in managing your stress and leading a healthier life.
The most common symptoms of burnout include tiredness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of motivation. It is believed that burnout is the result of a combination of excessive workload, lack of job control and low reward for performance, often compounded by shortages of resources, high pressure, challenging deadlines, and more. All of these can lead to physical, mental and emotional exhaustion.
At a physiological level, burnout is characterized by increased levels of cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is released when an individual experiences increased levels of stress. As cortisol levels rise, they can increase blood pressure, heart rate and glucose levels, as well as decrease serotonin production. Decreased levels of serotonin, which is an important neurotransmitter, can lead to feelings of sadness and/or apathy.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of burnout and its physical effects. The key lies in balancing stress levels with effective coping methods, such as regular exercise and healthy eating, getting enough sleep and relaxation, and seeking out social support. Additionally, you should make sure to take time off from the workplace, prioritize tasks, and manage your time wisely.

The word "vocation" is derived from the Latin word "vocare," which means "to call." It was originally used to refer to a spiritual call from God to devote one's life to a particular purpose. In modern usage, it is most often used to refer to a profession or career. It can also refer to the strong feeling of being called to a particular profession, such as a religious calling. In other words, it may represent the purpose or mission in life that someone feels compelled to pursue or fulfill.
Yet we give up a decade or more to train, to learn, with a laundry list of occupational hazards that are not found in other professions. Lawsuits, long hours, poor health, unrealistic expectations, working within a broken system, losing colleagues without the governing bodies blinking an eye are just some of the hazards.
Yet I do believe in physicians and medicine.
Self care, or self focus, is not selfish.
What do you need to thrive?
We are fully human when we focus on what we need to thrive, not by what society tells us we need to have materialistically to meet a standard of 'success'.
Join me in the self focus journal for 21 days. I'll do another podcast to let the listeners know what I learned, as I'll be doing it along with you.

“If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”
― Vincent Willem van Gogh
Transcendence is the state of being beyond or surpassing the ordinary limits of human experience. It is the state of being beyond the physical, material, and even spiritual world, and is often used to describe a spiritual or metaphysical experience. In religion, transcendence is the belief in the existence of a realm or state that is beyond the physical world, and which is the source of ultimate meaning and spiritual satisfaction. It is often associated with a belief in the divine or in a spiritual power. In philosophy, transcendence is the belief that reality exists beyond the physical world and is accessible through higher forms of knowledge.
In this episode, I sat down one last time with Ronnie Kinsey MBA.
We discussed transcendence and how we as individuals interpret it.
How can medicine transcend?
How can we heal healthcare?
We don't have the answers but hope to spur inspiration and innovation in the listeners.
