What happens when a giant whale appears in the middle of a Salt Lake City neighborhood? It becomes a landmark, a meme, a gathering place and the center of its own religion.

This week, we’re diving into Out of the Blue, the massive whale sculpture that has become an icon of Salt Lake City’s 9th & 9th neighborhood. We talk about the origins of the whale, the infamous Whale Church, people running laps around their beloved icon, and the strange culture that’s developed around it.

But first, it’s National Potato Day, so naturally we have some very important potato-related business to address.
