We talk a lot on this show about how to feed, train, and rehab our largest organ, our muscles. There are countless ways that people can exercise, but all of them will fall short of providing the benefits that come from a workout regimen based on strength training. To drive this point home, I’ve brought in an old friend and a real expert in this field.
I’ve known Dr. Tyna Moore since we went to chiropractor school together. In addition to being a chiropractor, she’s a naturopath who focuses on the application of natural pain solutions and regenerative injection therapies to treat all varieties of musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Tyna has spoken at numerous conferences all over the country as well as offering several online programs to the public.
In our talk today, Dr. Tyna and I discuss the importance of strength training and why it can’t be ignored, especially as we get older. There are many different types of workouts, but it really is proper strength training that will keep us healthy and strong throughout life. Dr. Tyna also discuses her specialty of regenerative injection therapies to help people rehab, including when they’re helpful and when they’re not.
How has strength training made improvements to your overall health? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode
“If you don’t strength-train, you’re missing out on all the benefits and then none of the other therapies really stick.” [5:20]
“Strength training makes you take better care of yourself because you can’t get any gains if you don’t do it.” [12:12]
“I think a lot of muscular-skeletal pain that we’re all seeing is potentially a thyroid issue.” [34:21]
“I want to be handy to my fellow humans. If you’re weak and sick and deconditioned, you are a huge load on the system. Think about the impact and the financial and the emotional burden that we are all having on society if we don’t keep ourselves well and strong.” [38:24]

Perimenopause and menopause are often distressing times for women. All of a sudden you can’t keep the weight off and all sorts of changes are happening that seem out of your control. Many women are told that there isn’t much to be done about it, but let me tell you, you still have the power to take charge of your health no matter your age.
Debra Atkinson knows how to help women stay healthy and vibrant before, during, and after menopause. As a fitness professional, who spent years hearing clients lament how their bodies are changing as they age, Debra has made it her mission to help women stay healthy well into their fifties and beyond. She has written ebooks, created courses, developed nutrition and exercise recommendations, and encourages countless women to stay fit and healthy no matter their age.
Today, Debra and I discuss the difficulties of finding nutrition and exercise programs designed for older women since very few are made with that population in mind. Many think that the best route is simply eating less and working out more, but Debra explains why this is actually counterproductive. To that end, we go over some great exercises that you can start using right away.
Has menopause changed the way you stay fit? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode“If you’re not seeing a result and you’re frustrated, it’s not really your fault because it probably wasn’t a program designed for you based on people like you.” [4:42]
“For every individual, you have to figure out where you are, what describes you, and if movement doesn’t feel good, then your first priority is function. Let’s get you functioning really well.” [15:38]
“The point isn’t really what volume of exercise you’re doing. It’s the outcome, the transformation.” [25:16]

If you’ve ever had a root canal, you may be at risk for all sorts of complications beyond just the ones in your mouth. The problem is that many dentists are not aware of the connections between oral health the other parts of your body. That’s why I’ve brought in someone who understands as well as anyone the importance of taking a holistic approach to oral care.
With an office in both Los Angeles and New York, Dr. Sanda Moldovan MS, DDS is an internationally recognized speaker, award-winning periodontist, author, and television personality and consultant on oral health, periodontics, nutrition, and anti-aging. Dr. Moldovan’s strong belief that health issues in the mouth are key indicators of a person’s overall well-being has led her to become one of the leading advocates for a well-rounded approach to oral health and nutrition.
Today, Dr. Moldovan and I discuss how infections in the mouth are actually signs that there are other issues going on with your health. Sometimes, even after we have the problem “fixed” through a root canal or other procedure, more problems can even occur as a result. As Dr. Moldovan explains, that’s why it’s essential to take a holistic approach to oral healthcare.
Do you suspect that a root canal might be leading to other problems? Leave a comment on the episode page!
In this episode“The issue with root canals is that it’s such an archaic way of treating a diseased tooth or pain.” [2:29]
“If you feel that there is something going on with your tooth, then something is going on with your tooth, even though we don’t see it on the x-ray.” [6:18]
“We underestimate the importance of what we put in the body. And the mouth is the one place where we introduce a lot of foreign materials without really knowing what we’re doing.” [23:23]
“We’re at such a good age in dentistry where we have healthier choices, healthier materials, and we can really pinpoint exactly how to give someone or offer someone a choice for optimum health.” [26:17]

When we look younger, we feel younger. That’s why many people turn to plastic surgery. However, as with any surgery, there’s the risk of complications. But what if there was a more holistic approach that was less invasive, but still leaves you looking and feeling younger than before?
Dr. Anthony Youn is a board-certified plastic surgeon. You may have seen him on one of his appearances on Dr. 90210, Dr. Oz, Rachel Ray, and Good Morning America. What makes him different is that he takes a holistic approach to help people look younger. Always looking for a better way to do his work, Dr. Youn is reinventing the approach that many plastic surgeons take.
In this chat, Dr. Youn explains how he came to the realization that surgery isn’t necessarily the answer to looking younger. He describes how he developed his holistic approach to plastic surgery. This means taking a specific regime of supplements and living an overall healthy lifestyle while taking advantage of the newest technological breakthroughs in this field that limit the invasiveness of many procedures
Have you had or considered plastic surgery? How would a more holistic approach benefit you? Leave a comment on the episode page and let me know!
In this episode“I thought that there has to be a better way so I went back to the drawing board and I started really doing a lot of research into ways to turn back the clock -- to look and feel younger -- without necessarily going under the knife.” [5:29]
“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. So if all you do is surgery, then what are you going to recommend? A lot of these doctors just recommend surgery.” [6:38]
“The bare minimum of what you should do for your skin is every morning cleanse your skin and pick a cleanser appropriate for it.” [16:19]
“What we should always be doing is striving for whatever is best for our patients. There’s a question of whether we’re protecting our sacred cow of this operation that makes us money or are really doing what’s best for our patients.” [27:08]

Eczema can be debilitating. I know from my own personal experience how the rashes it causes can stop someone in their tracks. What’s less understood is what causes this chronic skin condition and what you can do to stop it. Today’s guest, Jennifer Fugo, understands better than anyone else I know how to regain control after years of dealing with eczema.
Jennifer knows skin. She’s a clinical nutritionist, health advocate, author, and the host of Skinterrupt, an amazing podcast all about keeping our skin healthy. Having suffered from eczema herself, Jen has become devoted to helping others get to the root of their skin issues so that they can reclaim their health.
In this interview, Jen shares her own story of treating her damaged skin so that she could get her life back on track. Often, there’s a lot of shame around rashes and other skin problems and people sometimes disconnect from others as a result. Jen provides inspiration and hope that it doesn’t have to be this way.
Jen tells us some of the common, but lesser known causes of chronic skin conditions like eczema and what you can do starting today to begin to get a handle on them. This means that you need to be informed of what is healthy and what isn’t to your microbiome. Hormones and genetics also play a big role, but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless to take action. Throughout this talk, Jen shares loads of actionable advice for how you can rebuild healthy skin starting right now.
Have you had eczema? What treatments have helped and what hasn’t? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode“You take for granted things that we do every day not realizing that when the skin is damaged in that area it can be debilitating.” [5:05]
“There’s a whole lot that goes on underneath skin issues. Because it’s on the outside, we fixate on the outside. It’s one of the biggest pitfalls people get stuck on. What you put on the outside is important, but what you put on the inside is equally as important.” [7:17]
“There is a time and a place for doctors and medication. We just have to be really smart about it and judicious about what we choose to include in our regime and protocol.” [20:35]
“When you start to track things, not just from a food perspective, but also as a woman from a cycle perspective, that sometimes can give us clues as to what’s going on.” [29:00]

We often think of missing teeth as something that just affects the elderly. But it is actually quite common for adults of any age, and if ignored, the consequences can be severe. Indeed, taking care of our teeth goes far beyond aesthetics as dental health really impacts the entire body.
Dr. Stuart Froum is a board-certified periodontist and one of the foremost experts on dental implant complications. In fact, he’s written a book on just that topic as well as dozens of articles. His specialty is helping people who’ve had problems with their dental implants to regain control over their health. He’s lectured extensively throughout the country on this subject and teaches other dentists how to treat implant problems.
In this discussion, Dr. Froum lays out the reality of what happens when we are missing teeth in any part of our mouth. In fact, it can even impact the structure of your face and the alignment of your jaw. This impacts many muscles throughout your body. It also affects your nutrition and even cardiovascular health. Dr. Froum goes on to tell us how we can take control of our health in the face of tooth loss and regain that beautiful smile.
Have you or someone you know dealt with complications from a dental implant? Tell me how it went in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode“When there’s a loss of teeth for a prolonged time, the muscles in the body compensate for this by adapting to the new bite and the misalignment. When they do this, a person can have pain in their neck, shoulders, back, down the spine, all the way to the tips of their toes.” [3:13]
“Gum disease can certainly affect other parts of the body. It’s been shown to be related to a higher incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and even erectile dysfunction.” [8:27]
“If the patients come in regularly to have their implants cleaned, checked, and monitored, then the diseases can usually be detected early on. The earlier it’s detected, the better the results.” [20:37]
“Implant resolution and changes could occur in people who are 21 years old and people who are 101 years old.” [34:15]

Lab work is often very confusing to read and understand. It’s tough to know if your doctor is even ordering the right lab work and if that work is telling you the complete story of your health. Wouldn’t it be great if you could take more direct ownership of getting the health information that you need by ordering and completing these tests yourself?
Dr. Alan Hopkins is an emergency room doctor in Austin, Texas. With a keen interest in how medicine can help fight the effects of aging, he obtained a certificate as part of a fellowship with A4M in anti-aging medicine. Dr. Hopkins has taken his expertise on aging to some major companies and TV studios as a consultant. Throughout this process, he realized the importance of giving consumers better access to the lab tests that they need. That’s how Your Lab Work began.
Dr. Hopkins and I dive into the importance of receiving the right medical tests and why this sometimes does not happen in today’s medical world. We also talk about changes that occur in our bodies when we train and lose weight and the ramifications of these. Dr. Hopkins goes on to explain a number of important tests everyone should consider getting and how to best make sense of the results.
Have you ever received surprising results from the lab? Did this spur you to take action to better care for your health? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode“Between nutrition and sleep, most of your issues can be solved for athletes.” [11:06]
“It’s not just about having the best performance. It’s actually about long-term prevention of strain on the heart.” [14:32]
“We like to think of it as the great chameleon. If you’re having symptoms and something doesn’t seem right, you really need to do a complete evaluation of the thyroid, including thyroid antibodies.” [26:44]
“Industry is polluting the environment and that can sometimes leach into the soil and our water supply. It gets into our bodies and it goes undetected because we don’t check for it in medicine.” [33:15]
“I encourage all young people to really know their bodies and their biomarkers because the truth is young is not so young anymore.” [44:19]

What if I told you that you don’t need to eat vegetables or that fiber is overrated? You might not believe me, but I have an amazing guest here today who explains how our ancestors evolved eating fatty animal meat and that returning to a similar diet could do wonders for your health.
Shawn Baker is an orthopedic surgeon as well as a multiple world record holder in rowing. He’s trained with numerous Olympic athletes and world champions as well as collecting many titles of his own. Shawn has been on a strict carnivore diet for over two years after trying countless other diets. When I first met Shawn, it was clear to me that his diet had led to an impressive level of fitness and I had to ask him how he did it.
In this interview, we discuss what happens to our bodies when we switch to a diet based on animal protein and how that helps people train better at high intensity. Shawn explains how meat should be the centerpiece of your diet if you want to get all the essential parts of human nutrition.
Having looked into the anthropological evolution of the human diet, Shawn has found a way to place the focus on what he eats closer to the way our species actually developed. By reconnecting with the diets of our ancient ancestors, he has made countless benefits to his health and expertly explains how you can too.
Have you ever made meat a centerpiece of your diet? What changes have you experienced? Leave a comment on the episode page!
In this episode“You’ve got to have a certain level of intensity to be effective, so that’s what I do. I don't necessarily do a lot of training. It’s pretty sharp and to the point. I don’t spend three hours in the gym. Some days it might be as little as fifteen minutes but when I’m there it’s usually pretty intense stuff.” [6:02]
“Meat is where historically our nutrition comes from. It’s what has really turned us into human beings.” [8:53]
“We went from well nourished with plenty of food, plenty of animal fat, to now when we’re scraping by with lesser quality food.” [15:30]
“People eating a plant-based diet have much higher requirements for vitamins and minerals than somebody who's not eating that way, than someone who’s getting the actual forms we need via animal-based nutrition.” [33:33]
“I don’t think that every person needs to do this. I think there are certain people with certain health issues who probably will benefit tremendously and that may be their lifelong dietary strategy.” [47:00]

Moving naturally has always been and always will be a timeless and essential biological necessity. But most of us, even those of us who exercise regularly, neglect a wide range of natural movements. This leaves us limited in what we can functionally perform in our daily lives. Today’s guest, Erwan Le Corre, has made it his goal to revive an interest in restoring strength through natural movement.
Erwan Le Corre is the founder of MovNat and author of the new book The Practice of Natural Movement. With a unique and insightful approach to moving, Erwan has helped countless people reconnect with how their bodies are naturally meant to move so that they can regain their health in ways many thought they couldn’t. He is on a mission to help as many people as possible reconnect with their bodies and to establish a new paradigm in the fitness industry.
In this interview, Erwan breaks down many elements of movement and functioning and explains how it’s all part of a singular system whose parts are best strengthened through natural and comprehensive movements. He describes how our bodies are not designed to work just a few parts in isolation even though this is how many workouts are done. Erwan tells us how to reconnect with natural and comprehensive movements in order to strengthen our entire system and live healthier lives.
Did you try sitting and standing like Erwan described? What did it reveal? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode“Why is it normal, desirable, relevant, or effective to compartmentalize our physical behaviors in order to be in shape?” [5:03]
“Natural movement really belongs to all of us. You don’t need to be taught natural movement. What you may want to learn is to be highly efficient in the way you practice and perform. Nobody starts from scratch, it’s there instinctively.” [11:37]
“Nobody is strong overnight. Nobody is skilled overnight. It’s always a process like so many other things in life.” [26:40]
“If a lack of natural, varied, frequent, adaptable, practical movement is the reason why you are dealing with physical and functional ailments, then restoring healthy natural movement behavior might be the most potent change you can introduce to your lifestyle to fix most of those issues.” [42:48]

Pilates is a great and increasingly popular way to build functional strength. But with all the different styles and methods, it’s hard to know just what a great pilates workout looks like, not to mention how to do it safely and effectively. That’s why I’ve brought my good friend and pilates queen, Holly Jean Cosner on the show to clear it all up.
Holly has been a Pilates instructor for over 20 years. That’s not all though, as she’s also well trained in yoga and barre. Currently based in Los Angeles, Holly teaches pilates in private and groups sessions in addition to running teacher training. Always curious to find ways to better connect with her clients, Holly continues to learn and refine her practice so that everyone can benefit from her expertise.
With pilates growing in popularity around the country, Holly breaks down how to use its techniques to best suit your particular needs. She then explains how to take pilates and transition it to the functional world so that it can help you throughout your day. As she explains, much of this can’t be done without breathing right or using the equipment without the right guidance.
Are pilates part of your strength building regimen? Let me know how it’s going in the comments on the episode page!
In this episode
“I don’t want to waste anybody’s time. If you’re showing up for a session, I want you to feel what you’re looking to feel and make the change happen. If I don’t get the sensation that someone's understanding what I’m saying, I gotta find another way to say it. It’s on me not them.” [1:35]
“We have to get people to embrace the idea that they have to feel something. You’re not just here for your butt to look better or to look cuter in your dress tomorrow. You’re here for a bigger purpose.” [22:23]
“If you breathe, you can do it. It’s all about balancing out your breathe with your abdominal pressure and then everything gets light.” [24:50]
