You’ve probably heard that the brain can’t tell the difference between what you’re thinking about and what you’re actually experiencing. You can use your brain’s powerful imagination to create more success.

Athletes train mentally as well as physically, going through their upcoming performance in their head, seeing themselves excelling and winning. You can do that, too, about anything you want to achieve. Focus on how you feel as you confidently go about achieving your goal and focus on what it feels like as you achieve it. See yourself successful, and whenever you have a few moments in your day, go through that exercise again.

When you do that, you’re training your brain to focus on the success you desire, and you’ll be better at seeing the clues that will help you achieve your dream.

Do you work as part of a team? When you walk into work, how does the atmosphere feel? Supportive and helpful or guarded and suspicious?

Which atmosphere would you rather work in?

When a team is operating well, they are supportive and generous with each other – generosity of spirit, of time, and of assistance. When that’s the atmosphere, turnover is low and targets are achieved or exceeded. When people are guarded and suspicious, they are in fear, and fear creates high turnover and low team output.

If you want to improve the atmosphere around you, think about what you and your people might be afraid of. Even one toxic person can destroy team cohesion. Find a way to remove the toxicity and watch generosity, support and assistance return to your team.

People say “control freak” like it’s a bad thing.

I want to encourage you to let your control freak flag fly!! Keep listening though…there’s a right way and a wrong way to flaunt your inner control freak, and it’s the right way I want you to embrace.

The trick about being a successful AND well-loved control freak is to know what you actually can control, and only try to control that. You’re only in control of you. Not the weather, not the traffic, not other people’s thoughts, feelings or behavior. None of that will bend to your will, so give it up.

When you get irritated at anything that’s outside of your control, laugh at yourself and remind yourself that you and only you can control that feeling of irritation.

This kind of control freak is so do-able for you, and when you master it, you’ll be like most of the world’s successful people. Now go out there and be the control freak that everyone wants to be around!

Is there something going on in your life that’s so distressing that it seems to suck all the light and life out of you?

That’s an awful way to feel, and that feeling is a normal response, so the first thing I want to remind you is to be kind to yourself.

Challenges and losses can feel as if you’ll never get over them. Here’s the truth about everything: it’s temporary. No matter what is happening in your life right now, it’s temporary.

Time continues to pass, and whether you feel it or not, you continue to adapt, heal, and grow. In the short term, lean on your friends and family when you need to, be patient with your ragged feelings, and stick with your normal routine as much as possible.

In the long term, this is a painful page in the entire book of your life. You have so many wonderful pages still ahead of you.

Are you a genius? I bet you are!

Wait, before you start telling me how not-smart you are, here me out.

That’s all genius is.

Think about something you have a passion for. For me, it’s dogs – how they think, how they interact, how we interact together, and how I can put those puzzle pieces together and create an inter-species display of teamwork. That’s my genius. What’s yours?

Today I want you to think about what you’re curious and passionate about. Think about what you enjoy learning about and doing. Once you’ve figured out your sphere of genius, own it. Celebrate your genius, and then get out there and be even more genius about it!

Do you worry about someone you love? Think about what your thoughts are as you’re feeling worried about them – what, specifically, are you worried about?

Would it surprise you to know that the act of worrying about a loved one is a VERY unloving act?

Worry is focusing on their weaknesses, and when you’re looking at their weaknesses – which we all have! – you’re not focused on the parts you love, so by definition, you’re not loving them while you worry.

Loving someone is choosing to focus on what’s right about them and what’s right in their life, not what’s wrong. When you can teach yourself to focus on what’s good about them and their situation, you’ll feel love, not worry.

Use your powerful brain…shift your focus…and love that person instead of worrying about them.

What do you avoid doing?

Think about this carefully – what is one thing that you’ll put off doing until you absolutely, positively have to do it? Or maybe you’ve been putting something off for a long time and still haven’t done it and have no plans to, even though you know it must be done?

Avoidance is normal, and avoidance causes you stress, because somewhere in the back of your mind there’s this little irritating thing reminding you of whatever you’re choosing not to do. How do you feel when that happens? Chances are you get a feeling of dread, maybe even with the “iceberg in the stomach” feeling.

I know you know how to make that go away, right? Just do that thing you don’t want to do and the stress of not doing it vanishes, replaced by a feeling of accomplishment. I know – it’s not easy. I avoid things too. We all do.

Today, think about how you could break that chore into steps, and then accomplish one step a day until it’s done. You’ll feel soooooo much better!

Are you a generally satisfied person? By that, I mean you don’t worry all the time, you don’t get angry easily, and you try to see the best in others. If so, yay you!

Are most of your friends pretty much the same? Yay, you! You’ve set yourself up for success.

If you have one or two friends who can be difficult to be around because they like finding drama in every situation and have a more fiery disposition, that can add spice to your days. Just try not to get caught up in their dramas or become a pawn in their crusades.

People with different opinions, experiences and ways of being in the world will help you learn and grow, even if you don’t want to grow into who they are. And who knows – maybe the example you set of being on an even keel most of the time, finding the silver lining most of the time, and managing to be calm when others aren’t will help them grow to be more like you!

How often do you get offended? Does it upset you when people mispronounce your name? Do you get huffy if someone calls you ma’am and you think they think you’re old? How about when the waiter seems to be ignoring you?

When you find yourself starting to get offended and defensive, stop.

If you were out walking and saw a pile of dog poo sitting on the ground in front of you, would you walk around it, step over it, or step in it?

Think of the things that offend you as dog poo…just walk around them or step over them. When you choose to step in poo, it’s not the poo’s fault that your shoe is stinky!
