TITANIC TALK

Steven Ujifusa has a passion for oceanliners. The companies who build and ran them and the passengers who sailed on them - many immigrants coming to America to start a new life. I

n his book The Last Ships from Hamburg: Business, Rivalry, and the Race to Save Russia's Jews on the Eve of World War Steven explores the lives of the Jewish immigrants who fled Europe before war broke out.

The Wall Street Journal calls it "Absorbing . . . a David-and-Goliath tale of the industrial age."

In his book, Steven includes the stories of Jewish families on Titanic, having first learnt about the Ship of Dreams from his Jewish grandmother who told him about the bravery of the Straus's who didn't get into a lifeboat when given a chance. Ida would not leave the sinking ship because she couldn't imagine life without her husband, Isador, and they both perished.

Learn some fascinating news facts and more history of the ship Nelson and Alexandra love to talk about on Titanic Talk

Nelson and Alexandra also take a few minutes to remember Jon Landau - producer of Titanic and Avatar - who passed away last week.

Max Miller has a hugely popular  YouTube channel, TASTING HISTORY, that explores the history of food and the way we have prepared and eaten food over the centuries. He caught the attention of Titanic Talk hosts Nelson and Alexandra because he's done a whole series on the food and menus on on Titanic - and has more episodes to come.

We hear how he got started making food and researching food history and culture after watching the Great British Baking Show and being inspired by the backstory of the bakes in the early episodes. When the pandemic hit he turned his new passion into a very successful channel.
If you love food and history and wonder about the dishes served on Titanic this one is for you.

Nelson and Alexandra sat down with distinguised stage and screen actor Mark Capri aka Steward #4 in James Cameron's Titanic. He tells of the number of takes it took for Kate Winslet aka Rose to punch him in the face and give him a bloody nose.

He reads an excerpt from his diary from twenty five years ago which is also featured in Alexandra's documentary feature Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries. A real insight into the actor's life.

It can probably be said that no-one knows the story of Titanic like Don Lynch. He famously co-authored Titanic: An Illustrated History with renown Titanic artist Ken Marschall and as a result of that publication was asked to contribute to the making of James Cameron's Titanic. He even plays a small but memorable part (Frederic Spedden) in the film.

He's been down to the wreck twice with James Cameron and wrote the companion book to Ghosts of the Abyss. In the film he plays Thomas Andrews - wearing Victor Garber's costume that he wore in Titanic.

Nelson and Alexandra are so pleased to reveal some of Don's stories in this special episode of Titanic Talk.

Alexandra will be at the Vancouver BC screening for a Q&A.

In this very special episode Nelson and Alexandra pull back the curtain and go behind the scenes of the Titanic Scene by Scene  podcast with superfan Brittany Butler and her co-host, film critic, Ethan Brehm.

Hear how the idea for the podcast came about and the meticulous details they dive into to bring to Titanic fans the most intricate breakdown of every moment of James Cameron's film.

We discuss favourite scenes, favourite films and everything to do with film fandom and why we love the movies so much. This was a real treat for Titanic Talk and will go down as one of our very favourite episodes, not least of all because Brittany, Ethan and Nelson are all featured in Alexandra's documentary Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries which will release for everyone to watch this summer.

Titanic Scene by Scene is almost done. #sob Brittany and Ethan only have one more scene and the credits to go. For those of us hooked on the podcast we will shed a tear, but for those of your unfamiliar, you have the treat of being able to go back to the very beginning and listen to all forty episodes.

David Condon started collecting and selling pieces of the set from James Cameron's Titanic before the film had come out in cinemas. A lucky coincidence had him stumble upon a story about a stash of timber, decking and plasterwork that had been discarded erroneously in a Mexican field not far from the studio where Titanic was filmed. The locals had been invited to come and take what they needed. Many of the items were well made and too good to dump so they were repurposed in homes and business buildings. It was free building material.

There followed David's twenty five plus year Mexican scavenger hunt for Titanic memorabilia in the form of doors, railings, portholes and wooden paneling. Parts of a movie set that are usually taken to the dump to be trashed.
Nelson and Alexandra barely had enough time in this episode to hear all his wonderful stories of discovery. He's a Titaniac Detective in the most interesting ways.

Some of his items from the film can be viewed on his eBay shop TitanicDave4u

Michael Kinnan never expected a ten minute college assignment based on his favourite movie, Titanic, would turn into an hour long homage to James Cameron's epic tale. NEVER LET GO sees Michael telling the story of Jack and Rose and he plays ALL the parts.

The one man show has played in New York, Los Angeles and The Edinburgh Festival transcending language and cultures with just enough combination of camp, tongue in cheek and pathos to have the New York Times declare "...as for the sex scene... It's better here'.

Nelson and Alexandra delve into the origins of making an intimate close up show about one of the biggest films of all time, stripped down to the essence of a young Edwardian woman falling in love with Jack Dawson, without sacrificing the horror and pain of the loss of so many lives.

Michael next performs Never Let Go at Dynasty Typewriter on April 16th 2024 - the day after the 112th anniversary of the sinking and again May 22nd - June 1st in New York at Brooklyn's Brick Theater.

If you are a Titaniac and in those cities, add it to your bucket list -  you must NOT miss it.

This has to be one of our most fascinating episodes. Commander Parks Stephenson, mariner and explorer, takes us down to the wreck of Titanic. His knowledge of the exploration of the wreck and the ongoing forensics into how and why she sank is fascinating. As a result he's had some lively debates with his good friend James Cameron about where and how Titanic struck the iceberg...

You won't want to miss this one. Nelson and Alexandra were both on the edge of their seats.

Follow Commander Stephenson on his Facebook Page ~ Parks Stephenson's Explorations and he's currently Executive Director of the USS Kidd Museum in Baton Rouge, Louisianna.
