TITANIC TALK

How many times have you seen Titanic?
Many people will say  "more than they can count - hundreds even".

But how many films have you watched that are about Titanic?

Evgueni Mlodik is this episode's guest. He must have seen every narrative and documentary with Titanic in the title EVER MADE  - and there are so many. Who knew!
We asked him to prune his list because with all the good, the bad and the cheesy - we were never going to get to them all in the time allotted.

In this podcast Nelson and Alexandra only got to hear about the tip of the iceberg. (sorry!)

We often hear that Titanic is one of the most popular and well known brands on the planet and making movies about them - like the soon to be released Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries never fails to get the attention of Titaniacs everywhere.
Our guest Yev takes that attention to the next level with his exhaustive list and knowledge of the films and their makers.

Find his posts about Titanic  - the films and the ship - on his Facebook page where you can ask him anything you want - he's sure to know the answer!!

Nelson and Alexandra crack open the cookbooks of Titanic Author Veronica Hinke

Veronica is the author of the acclaimed historical novel “The Last Night on the Titanic,” and the recently released “Titanic: The Official Cookbook: 40 Timeless Recipes for Every Occasion.” Veronica tells of her love of early 20th century history, culinary arts and most of all…. people.
“Every food story I’ve ever written always, at the core of each one, ended up being about the people, and that doesn’t seem to change. This book is no different. Those stories of hope and resilience…I think that’s why the Titanic story is still alive today,”

Her mouthwatering books, short stories and magazine articles explore food history and the delicious culinary narratives that take you back in time. Sit back with an Old Fashioned (a recipe for it is in Titanic: The Official Cookbook) and hear her tell about early 20th century drinking and dining experiences and personalties of that era.

Peter White auditioned for a number of roles in Titanic and eventually landed the role of the wireless operator of the Californian who tragically turned off his radio and went to bed while the Titanic sank. Peter did extensive research into his character, Charles Victor Groves, or 3rd Officer Groves, of the Californian. He spent more than four months in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, getting to know his fellow cast mates while waiting to be called the set to film his scenes.

He regales Nelson and Alexandra with tales from the nightly Happy Hours in the Real Del Mar bar to filming on the set of the Californian wireless room, only to find at an early screening that he had been completely cut from the film. All he was left with was a group of new friends and a special story to repeat at dinner parties in the ensuing twenty five years.

Peter is featured in Alexandra's documentary Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries reading from the diary he wrote in 1998.

Steven Schwankert lived in China for twenty five years and was shocked to learn that no-one knew there were six Chinese survivors of the Titanic sinking. With renown documentarian Arthur Jones, he set out to tell their story in his documentary THE SIX .
Through meticulous research, searching for descendants and recreating the possible experiences of what might have happened that night, they go on an as yet untold journey of discovery. A fascinating and educational film to say the least and a Must Watch for all our listeners.

Steven also has his own podcast - he's back home in New Jersey and his stories follow the New Jersey-linked passengers on Titanic - he's up to 60 as of this publication!

Nelson and Alexandra have a fascinating conversation about making films about Titanic and discovering more unknown facts about The Ship of Dreams.

Kris Andersson worked with choreographer Lynne Hockney on a film before she was looking for dancers to help her on James Cameron's Titanic. Kris was hired for the dance team and learnt traditional folk dances for Lynne to show James Cameron. But he ended up in Mexico with the rest of the dancers teaching Titanic's Third Class 'passengers' their steps and on one very special occasion twirled Kate Winslet in his arms for a morning when he doubled for Leonardo Di Caprio.

Like many of the actors featured in Alexandra's Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries, Kris's unique perspective and his unforgettable experiences on the set of Titanic add more stories to those you have never heard before.

Joshua Noble came to us via the wonderful Titanic community that has grown, widened and deepened since Alexandra made her feature documentary SHIP OF DREAMS: Titanic Movie Diaries to co-ordinate with the 25th anniversary celebrations of James Cameron's Titanic.

And since co-hosting Titanic Talk with Nelson Aspen - a podcast that started as a way to promote the film but now stands on its own as a place to delve further into the stories of Titanic - we continue to build on that community.

Joshua Noble has been interested in the history of the ship from a very young and age and once he was old enough to watch it, a fan of the film too. But of particular interest are the lesser known characters, survivors and stories that go beyond Thomas Andrews, Captain Smith and Molly Brown. In this episode he shines a light on Annie Robinson, Archibald Butt, Lutie Davis and many others.

You will learn a lot and you're in for a real treat!

WARNING ~ this episode contains STRONG language.

Alexandra and Craig met not on the set of Titanic, but in the bar of the Real Del Mar in Mexico where all the actors in the film were staying while they worked - or drank margaritas - for months on end.

Hear about Craig's  banter with 'Jim' Cameron, his bust up with an un-named fellow actor, his most recent work, and his podcast Kelly's Heroes which he recorded during the pandemic.

Not for the faint hearted but this is a funny one for sure.
Craig's podcast is KELLY'S HEROES

For this first very special episode of Season Two of Titanic Talk Nelson and Alexandra recorded in front of a live audience at the Mastic Beach Mini Indie Film Festival in New York just after they had watched Alexandra's documentary Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries.

The questions sometimes gave chills and always gave smiles as we shared memories of Titanic with Amy Gaipa who is a co-founder of  the festival but also most notably played Rose's maid, Trudy Bolt in James Cameron's Titanic.

Our Titanic community grows ever wider, more friendly and profound. Listen as people share their first thoughts of the documentary and long term memories of James Cameron's film and Titanic herself.
