CONTENT WARNING: Sexual Abuse, Descriptions of Violence & Murder
Today Jan is joined by Amy B. Chesler, author, podcaster, speaker, survivor, and victim advocate from Los Angeles, California. Her training in the arts and public speaking began in childhood, but it wasn’t until losing her mother to domestic violence in 2007 that she found her true calling: trauma-informing the public, and inspiring legal and social change. Her advocacy-related work has been seen on IDtv’s Evil Lives Here and in Chicken Soup for the Soul (several times over), The New York Post, Scary Mommy, Something Was Wrong podcast, and many more major platforms. Amy was even gifted the BlogHer honor of Voice of the Year in 2017, and became M.C. of the popular Moms Meet conference in 2018 & 2019. In April of 2021 she celebrated the release of her true crime memoir, Working for Justice, and in 2023 she launched the chart-topping true crime/self-help podcast, What Came Next with Tiffany Reese of Something Was Wrong. Utilizing her experience in the education and the criminal justice systems, as well as her degree in Psychology, Amy often speaks about parenthood, grief, domestic violence, the nature of abuse, trauma healing, and ethics in the genre of true crime. Amy is here to tell her harrowing story of growing up with a violent sibling who eventually snapped. Through her trauma and grief she became an advocate for others who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and familial violence.

Today Jan explores stage 4 of the 6 stages of grooming which is 'Isolating the child'. This can take many forms, but one of the ways that seems to be consistent is using secrets as a way of putting a wedge between the child and what support system they have. Another way in which this stage is carried out and can actually be seen as a parent is the manipulator taking on duties/tasks that you would generally perform, so remember to ask yourself "Would I do this for another person?". All that and more in today's episode.

Today Jan begins the first part of a series within a series, introducing what the identifiable stages of grooming are, then diving into stage 1 using her story as an example. Stage 1 is how the groomer singles out a victim, this is anything from the environment they occupy to have a pool to choose from, to knowing how to identify who is vulnerable in the pool.

Today, Jan is joined by Abigail Alvarado who is here to tell her harrowing story. Starting at age 9, Abigail and her siblings were removed from the crack house they called home by Child Protective Services (CPS). After a short stay in a shelter, their uncle took them in and shortly thereafter adopted them. Not long after is when the progressive nightmare began. Starting with the same old story of grooming into molestation into sexual abuse while the mother figure doesn't believe her claims, but then after nearly 7 years of constant abuse and brainwashing is where the story takes a hard turn: forced surrogacy. Having 3 children over the next 6-7 years, Abigail watched in horror as her children are raised to believe she is their older sister and giving their love to a pair of sadistic rapists who now have her trapped, or her children will be their next victims. Enter Rudy, a year of secretive on again off again connections, and finally the dam bursts, she tells him her story, and he believes her. Beyond that, he believes in her and offers his assistance if she can manage to escape with her children, which she does. 24 and free she begins a new life with the man she has grown to love and trust. Happily ever after does exist it turns out.

Trauma Interrupted with Jan Broberg exists to change the way trauma is understood, discussed, and healed. It is the primary public-facing voice of the…
Why It Matters?
Trauma narratives are often fragmented, sensationalized, or oversimplified. Survivors are either ignored or reduced to their worst moments. Trauma Interrupted reframes trauma as a human experience, not an identity, and recovery as a collective responsibility, not an individual burden.
The podcast is not just storytelling, it is movement-building media.
