The Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City's Grande Mosquée de Québec is one of several mosques in Quebec City. The mosque is close to the Université Laval, which has many international students from French-speaking, Muslim-majority African countries. In June 2016, during Ramadan it was the target of an incident in which a pig's severed head was left outside the mosque. The incident had been described as a hate crime and an Islamophobic attack. Devastatingly, less than a year later, the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City would have to endure an even more appalling event.

Nobuyuki Sato has a troubled history. Neighbors said he became increasingly violent after his father died in 1989. They saw him break doors and windows in the family house, and noticed that his mother once had a black eye. On January 28th, 2000, four years after Sato’s mother reported his odd behavior to authorities, officials would finally respond with a home visit. Who they would find would solve a decade old missing persons case.

On January 27, 1973, 20 year old Dawn Magyar stopped at the Yankee Store to buy baby clothes for her son Donnie, whose first birthday had been celebrated but the family just four days earlier and she went to Giant grocery store to buy baby food and groceries for a special meal she had planned with her husband. Within the next 90 minutes, Dawn Magyar would be kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered. Was the crime a random act of violence or was Dawn victimized by someone she knew?

On January 26th 1966, Jane, Arnna and Grant Beaumont took a five-minute three kilometer (1.8 mile) bus journey from their home to Glenelg Beach. They caught the bus at 8:45 am and were expected to return home on the 12:00 noon bus. They were never seen again.

On January 21, 1947, Al Capone had a stroke. He regained consciousness and started to improve, but contracted bronchopneumonia. He suffered a cardiac arrest on January 22, and on January 25, surrounded by his family in his home, Capone died after his heart failed as a result of apoplexy. A less than exciting end for an infamous gangster.

On January 24, 1989 at 7:16 a.m.EST, Ted Bundy died in the Raiford Florida State Prison electric chair. Hundreds of revelers, including 20 off-duty police officers sang, danced and set off fireworks in a pasture across the street from the prison while the execution was carried out. The crowd then cheered loudly as the white hearse containing his corpse departed the prison.

Rae Lamar Wiggins was born January 20, 1974. A first-round draft pick in the 1997 NFL Draft, taken by the Carolina Panthers with the 27th overall selection.
