Day One of the Robert Kessler murder trial brought a major reversal: Kessler abandoned self-representation, returned his defense to public defender Maria Dunker, and chose to leave the courtroom.

Opening statements presented competing accounts of the death of Stephanie Crone-Overholts, the 47-year-old mother whose dismembered remains were discovered in Tampa’s McKay Bay in November 2021. Prosecutors alleged Kessler stabbed Stephanie four times in the neck before dismembering her body and disposing of her remains. The defense challenged the evidence establishing how and when she died and whether Kessler was responsible.
