The Donna Adelson case contains a remarkable written record of how she inserted herself into Wendi Adelson’s fight with Dan Markel. After the court rejected Wendi’s relocation request, Wendi testified that Donna proposed using the boys’ religion as leverage, dressing them in Hitler Youth uniforms, and offering Markel $1 million to allow the children to move to South Florida. 

Those ideas were presented at Donna’s 2025 murder trial alongside testimony about her broader role in the family. Wendi told the jury that Donna “micromanaged my life.” Robert Adelson said his mother was controlling, had strong ideas about how her children should live, and “ran the show.” His testimony also described Charlie as more dependent on Donna than the other siblings. 

That dependence did not disappear when Charlie became a successful adult. Jail call records showed 86 calls to Donna’s number during the week after Charlie’s 2023 conviction, totaling 2,118 minutes. Financial investigator Mary Hull testified that Donna managed details such as Charlie’s hotels, flights, and bills. 

Katherine Magbanua added another account of the mother-son relationship. She testified that Charlie would step away to call Donna during discussions about the murder arrangement and return afterward. Magbanua also testified that Charlie told her Donna had washed damp cash. Trial evidence showed Magbanua received 44 checks from the family dental practice, and Donna had signing authority on those checks. Donna’s defense argued she acted at Charlie’s direction and disputed the state’s claim that the payments tied her to the murder plot.
 
Donna was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the murder-for-hire killing of Markel and sentenced to life in prison. Her direct appeal remains pending. The First District Court of Appeal accepted her amended initial brief on September 8, 2026, and ordered the state to file its answer within 30 days.

Eighty-six calls. Two thousand one hundred eighteen minutes. More than thirty-five hours in a single week. That's the phone record between Donna Adelson and her son Charlie in the days between his murder conviction and her arrest in November 2023.

On one of those calls, after Charlie dropped off the line, Donna kept talking without realizing the recording was still running. She told Harvey she wanted to go to sleep and not see her son again. She said they could do it together. Leave a note. Same conversation, she was looking up Vietnam and researching extradition treaties for Korea and China.

Robert Adelson hadn't spoken to his mother in nine years when he walked into a Tallahassee courtroom on August 25, 2025. First time he'd testified in any of the four trials connected to the murder of Dan Markel. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't perform. He described the machine — a mother who demanded compliance and discarded anyone who chose differently. He told the jury she ran the show. That she had fixed ideas about who her children married and what they did for a living. And that he never heard a single negative word about Dan Markel until after Wendi moved out.

Wendi confirmed it from the same witness chair. She told the jury her mother micromanaged her life. The prosecutor asked if she'd once said her mother operates with emotional subterfuge. She didn't deny it. She admitted to police on the day Dan was killed that her parents had more reasons to dislike Danny than anyone else.

Dan filed the Grandma Motion to restrict Donna's unsupervised contact with his children. That motion was never heard. He was killed before the court date.

Donna Adelson's 2025 trial in the Dan Markel murder case put a handwritten jailhouse script in front of the jury. Drina Bernhardt testified that Donna wrote questions and answers she wanted Bernhardt to memorize for false testimony about Katherine Magbanua. FDLE handwriting analyst Kate Butler testified that Donna wrote the script after comparing it with known samples. 

Bernhardt said Donna promised $10,000 and a grand piano, along with other help, if she cooperated. Donna's defense attacked Bernhardt's credibility and argued her own criminal case gave her a reason to seek leverage with prosecutors. Patricia Byrd, another jailhouse witness, separately testified that Donna admitted involvement and wanted false testimony aimed at Magbanua. One week after Charlie's 2023 conviction, Donna was arrested at Miami International Airport as she and Harvey prepared to travel to Vietnam on one-way tickets. 

The state also focused on 44 checks Donna signed to Magbanua after Markel's murder. Prosecutors argued the checks were part of the financial trail linking Donna to the plot. The defense said Charlie instructed Donna to write them because he claimed he was being extorted. Jurors convicted Donna on first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation after roughly three hours. 

Wendi Adelson has never been charged in Markel's death, but Jeffrey Lacasse gave the jury a disputed account of a conversation five days before the murder. Lacasse testified that Wendi said Charlie had explored "all options" for the "Danny Markel problem," including hiring a hitman for about $15,000. Wendi denied making that statement. 
Lacasse also testified that Wendi asked about his Friday driving route and then told him not to contact her for a week. Wendi was home for a Geek Squad appointment on the morning Markel was shot, repairing the television connected to Charlie's hitman joke. She testified that the television was not code for murder and later acknowledged seeing police tape near Markel's home without calling him or the children's daycare.

A judge ruled that Wendi Adelson couldn't move her sons away from their father, FSU law professor Dan Markel. That ruling is where prosecutors say this case actually begins. Donna Adelson, Wendi's mother, allegedly offered Markel a million dollars to make it go away. He said no. Months later, two men drove five hours from Miami in a rented Prius and shot Markel twice in the head in his own garage — the same morning he'd dropped his two sons at preschool and gone to the gym. He was 41 years old. What investigators found next wasn't a confession. Some defenses fall apart in the courtroom. This one basically fell apart the second the prosecutor opened her mouth. "Do extortionists send a girlfriend of the victim to get the money?" That's the question Georgia Cappleman asked a jury after Charlie Adelson took the stand and swore, under oath, that he'd been shaken down by hitmen — and had simply been making the payments ever since.

The payment plan itself deserves its own hall of fame. Three thousand dollars a month, funneled through the family dental office, in checks his mother signed, funded by cash she allegedly laundered before it changed hands. This from a periodontist sitting on more than eight million dollars in family accounts. The man had the money to make this go away outright. Instead, jurors were asked to believe he ran his alleged extortion payments like a dental financing plan — steady installments, paper trail included, because nothing says "criminal enterprise" like meticulous bookkeeping.

The jury needed three hours to see through it. Guilty — murder, conspiracy, solicitation, the full set. Charlie mouthed "No" and put his head down on the defense table. Judge Everett handed him life without parole, plus sixty consecutive years, in case anyone worried he might get out early on a technicality. Speaking of technicalities — his own appeal got affirmed in July 2026 after his attorney argued the venue challenge out loud instead of putting it in writing. Even on appeal, the unforced errors didn't stop.
