Mary King’s Close was a street in Edinburgh sealed off from the world, leaving all the people suffering from the bubonic plague trapped beneath.

These people were quarantined and left to die.

The residents in the city above went about with their everyday lives.

Did they even know there were victims of the plague dying beneath their feet?

Mary King’s Close was bricked up, but all of the people who lived within – plague-infected or not – were no longer living within the street.

You would expect with such a sordid history the place would be haunted.

The news that demons had invaded a house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, first appeared in an Associated Press report on August 18, 1986.

The house at the centre of the activity was on Chase Street in this small mining town just outside of Scranton is occupied by Jack and Janet Smurl and their four children: Dawn, 17, Heather, 14, and Karen and Shannon, 8-year-old twins. 

As the news reached the papers the family became inundated with reporters desperate for further dramatic story lines.

Was this a true haunting?

The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed its doors as a working prison in 1996.

Crumlin Road Gaol is an historic Victorian-era prison which was a working gaol for over 150 years.

In that time it saw children as young as ten pass through the gates as inmates.

It has housed prisoners through times of severe punishment, world wars, and political conflicts.

Sixteen years after its closure, Crumlin Road Gaol opened to the public as a visitor attraction and conference centre.

The town of Jedburgh is situated in the Scottish Borders, and is home to a jail infamous for its terrible conditions and the cruelty that was dealt out to the prisoners.

Torture and violence was common during it’s time so it is no surprise that the old jail has a terrifying reputation.

During past ghost hunts at Jedburgh Jail apparitions and dark shadows have been seen and cell doors have slammed shut by unseen hands. Flashes of light are regularly seen and cold spots, breezes and blasts of cold air are felt in closed rooms.

Jedburgh Castle Jail was built in 1823, purposely resembling a castle to pay tribute to the medieval castle “Iedd-brugh’ that once stood on that same spot. 

Sounds creepy right?!!

A night watchman in 1926 sustained injuries after being “pushed from behind” and told angrily by a deep voice “to get back to work.” The man, upon searching the grounds, could find no sign of any other living person.

Chillingham Castle is the scene for this weeks True Haunting episode and we are so excited to bring this one to you as we will be experiencing this site for ourselves in just a few weeks time as we travel the UK in April on our haunted road trip.

Chillingham has a history of bloodshed with marauding tribes of Scots and English endlessly killing each other over territory. It has stories of murder and torture and incredible suffering.

We long to wander it's long hallways and darkened stairwells seeking out the energies that seem trapped behind its stone walls.

The famous English poet Longfellow wrote a poem about Chillingham - it started like this!
