  • S3 E06: From Oldham to Harley Street
    This month's podcast guest Dr. Simon Gallier shares with us his unique journey through life and his ground-breaking approach to applying the principles of the John Lewis Partnership into dental practice ownership. After leaving Manchester Grammar School for Manchester Dental School, Simon became an army cadet and this led him from the Army Dental Corps to becoming part of an elite group within the Parachute Regiment. Not your every-day dental career pathway. Having moved from the military back to Civvie Street (although he continued for 10 years in the Reserve Forces), Simon soon started buying practices including two dental and one aesthetic clinic in Harley Street but it wasn't long before he was looking at retail high-street dentistry, many years before Boots and others considered this distribution method. He pioneered the use of lasers in UK dentistry and became Clinical Director of a major corporate before returning to his independent search for excellence. Along the way came a fascination with the vision that had taken John Lewis from one store to the company they are today and their philosophy of making all employees "partners" in the growth of the organisation. Today he is CEO of Future Health Partnership, a revolutionary micro-corporate who embrace the employee partnership philosophy. As well as hearing all about Simon's extraordinary journey, we will hear some of his guiding principles, based on what he learned in the military, in retail and in corporate life - messages for all owners and managers about what makes elites successful - and how to play at the top of your game whilst serving your community. You will learn how to transform a workforce who turn over at 20% per annum into a team who stay with you for 20 years. P.S. a medal of valour for Ashley, who came to this interview the day after Manchester City had clinched their second Premier League title and two reds interviewed a true blue!

  • S3 E04: From Opening Garage Doors to Opening the Doors of Dental Practices to More Patients
    Given the choice between continuing her academic studies at university and getting into the workplace, Ali began her working life on the bottom rung of a company selling garage doors. After years of graft she became employee #1 in a three-person agency that was subsequently acquired by a global company - moving from a team of 4 to be one of 2,500 people worldwide overnight. Ali learned her trade pioneering digital marketing before most of us even had a web site, educating companies like Britannia Building Society and Lloyds Bank way back in 2001 that there was more to marketing than direct mail shots and expensive print media. She pioneered new marketing systems for clients such as Travelodge and MoneySupermarket, showing them how carefully planned and measured email campaigns could show predictable results and a positive Return on Investment. A turning point came in 2009, when she started consulting for a small company with a new product for the orthodontic market in Europe - Invisalign. When she and business partner Cam Brewer decided to "go it alone" in 2014, they were successful in taking the Invisalign account with them and are still responsible for their European marketing programmes. Then came an innovative new software product that allowed dental teams to measure and monitor their new patient acquisitions - and DenGro was born, a company that is now extending it's capabilities into multiple treatment modalities, internationally and new vertical markets. In this podcast you will be captivated by Ali's natural enthusiasm and willingness to always "give it a go". You will learn:
    • how to start at the bottom and rise to the top;
    • why you need ambassadors inside organisations to facilitate change;
    • how a small company can benefit from a big opportunity;
    • why data is everything in marketing;
    • what's good and bad about Facebook advertising;
    • why relationships are the key to longevity in business;
    • how you can empower your team to convert more leads into patients.

  • S3 E03: What is CSR and what's in it for you - a beginners guide to running a responsible business

    After starting his working life as a teacher and a tour manager in the music business, Mark accidentally entered the charity sector as a short-term hire for a friend and has stayed there ever since.

    He and his wife Jo lived in Tanzania for 10 years, began raising a family and both served for the African dental charity Bridge2Aid, with Mark eventually becoming CEO. Mark now acts as an independent consultant to businesses of all sizes who want to develop their CSR (corporate social responsibility) strategy - which begs three questions:

    1. What exactly is CSR - is it just fund raising or is there more to it than that?
    2. How is that relevant to a small owner-managed business like a dental practice - isn't CSR just for big business?
    3. And why bother - what's in it for the owners and team of a dental practice to get involved?

    In this month's podcast we welcome an old and trusted friend to share with us his story and his answers to the questions we pose above. Mark has already helped some of the top practices in the UK to become more responsible, and reap the internal and external benefits that CSR brings.

    In this podcast you will learn:

    • the three pillars of a responsible business - it's fundamentally more than fund-raising;
    • how being responsible is relevant to all businesses, no matter what sector or size;
    • how you can get started and
    • what's in it for you - why a well managed CSR strategy can help with staff retention, productivity, reputation and increase profitability

  • S2 E19: An Interview with Dr. Gina Vega

    Ashley and I were delighted to catch up recently with Gina Vega, Principal of Bishopsgate Dental Care.

    Here's how Gina introduced herself in my Kindle e-book The Female Principal back in 2016:

    "When I was eight years old, back in Mexico, I decided that I wanted to be a dentist. Don't ask me why I just knew it! So 14 years later I qualified as a Dental Surgeon in Mexico.

    Armed with a great profession and after practicing in Mexico City for three years I moved to London in 2001. Whilst I re-qualified through the IQE I worked as a dental nurse, where I learned about dentistry in the UK, and how important was to work with a nice and fair dentist. I re-qualified in 2004 and started working in an NHS-Private practice.

    My last job as an Associate was in a lovely private practice located 3 minutes away from home. It was the perfect job and I was happily enjoying my life as a part-time dentist and a mum.

    So what on earth made me change that stress-free life for my hectic and complicated life of now?

    I wanted to do the dentistry I love and when I saw Bishopsgate Dental Care for the first time, I fell in love with it!"

    Today, Gina shares with her the story of how she turned a near-bankrupt practice into a roaring success in possibly the most competitive square mile of the UK - The City of London.

    Share with her the mountains, valleys, and missiles of practice ownership and learn why she has triumphed over the obstacles and challenges that we all face. Contact Us
