The Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast now moves into the 22nd chapter of Luke verse 1 with Dr. John G. Mitchell.

In the first 15 verses, Luke writes two different scenes.

The first scene has to do with Judas Iscariot agreeing with

the chief priests to betray the Lord Jesus to them. Judas

was the only disciple from southern Israel while all the

other disciples were from the north of Israel, from Galilee.

Dr. Mitchell points out that only Judas referred to Jesus

as Rabbi at the passover, while the others called Jesus

Lord.

In the second scene we see Jesus asking two of His

disciples, Peter and John, to go into Jerusalem to prepare

the passover meal in an upper room.

In the upper room, Jesus now expresses His deepest heart’s

desire to eat the last passover with them. Jesus is now our

passover by His blood.

Let’s join Dr. Mitchell in Luke 22:1.

Jesus, having spoken to His disciples about the signs of His

2nd coming to earth to establish the kingdom of God, He goes

on to speak another parable. This one is the parable of the

fig tree. As Dr. Mitchell explains, the fig tree is a picture of the nation of Israel.

He also shares the meaning of the phrase, “this generation”

found in verse 32.

Jesus also declares the contrasts between the two things that

will pass away and the two things that will not pass away.

Jesus’ words will never pass away nor the nation of Israel.

The Word of God is eternal.

The Psalmist wrote, “Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is settled in

heaven.” Ps. 119:89

Turn with us to Luke 21:27 with Dr. Mitchell who speaks

more in detail about our Lord Jesus’ 2nd coming to the earth.

As we continue in Luke 21:25, Jesus turns our attention to

His second coming to the earth. His 2nd coming will be

accompanied with signs in the sun, moon and stars.

In Genesis 1:14 Moses wrote the God created the sun, moon

and stars for signs, seasons and for days and years.

These will be showing their signs in the heavens at His coming.

Apparently, from what Jesus our Lord says in verses 27-28,

there will be enough passage of time to allow the believers

to lift up their heads and see their redemption drawing

near, Jesus Himself.

Like wise, there will be people on earth who will be in

great distress because of all the seemingly unexplainable

phenomena happening on the earth.

Here is Dr. Mitchell with more detail concerning our Lord’s

coming to earth, Luke 21:25, on the Unchanging Word Bible

Our study continues in Luke 21:20 with Jesus’ words

concerning the city of Jerusalem. Here the Lord gives

conditions and warnings to His own. As we learn, these

predictions came to pass some 40 years later in 70 A.D.

All these things will come to pass in order to fulfill

Scripture. There are Scriptures which reference Israel such

as Deuteronomy 28:63-66. The times of the Gentiles are here in Luke 21:24. Luke only uses this phrase, “the times of the

Gentiles” found in this verse.

As Dr. Mitchell explains, the times of the Gentiles is the

entire period of time that the Jewish nation is under Gentile domination. This domination began with the

Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel 2 in 603 B.C. and

continues to this day.

Let’s hear more from Dr. Mitchell, on the Unchanging

Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 21:20-24.

In this study, Dr. Mitchell will cover three subjects our

Lord addresses:

1. The destruction of the temple,

2. The destruction of the city, and

3. The worldwide Gentile dominion

known as the times of the gentiles.

Our study now turns to the predictions of

our Lord Jesus Christ found in Luke 21.

We begin with verse 5.

While Jesus and the disciples were looking at the temple,

where the poor widow tossed in her last bit of money, Jesus

now turns to speaking about the temple itself. At this point

Jesus’ disciples begin to ask the Lord questions. They asked

a “when” question and a “what” question.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that Luke is more occupied

with the temple and the city, while Matthew and Mark deal

more with end time events.

Luke 21:5.

Jesus now turns the tables on the Scribes by asking them,

“How can they say that the Christ is David’s son?”

This is based on the Scripture, Ps 110:1.

“David calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

How is it the Lord could be David’s Lord, who existed before

David was born and yet at the same time be David’s son who

was born after David?

What would be your answer?

Then Jesus turns to His disciples in the presence of the

people and gives them a warning. Watch out for pretenders

who prey on widow’s houses.

Our Lord then turns to an example of a widow who gave of her

substance to the Lord. As Dr. Mitchell points our, Jesus is

the only one who saw this woman’s sacrificial gift.

Whereas the previous question had political overtones about

paying taxes, the Sadducees now confront Jesus with a hypothetical question about a resurrection which they themselves did not even believe in. This was a doctrinal question concerning life after death with regards to

marriage. Dr. Mitchell gives us an exposition of the circumstances and questions set before Jesus from these religious leaders

who were theological liberal. They did not believe in anything supernatural, neither angels, spirits,

resurrection or the after life.

Jesus our Lord demonstrates with Scripture that there is life after death for those believe in Him. Scripture tells you and me that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Here is Dr. Mitchell with Jesus’ statement about those who

have a relationship with the living God, even after death,

Lk.20:27

As Dr. Mitchell reads to us, Jesus tells a parable of a vineyard.

As we will find out, this parable speaks of the nation of

Israel. This parable speaks of the many prophets and wise

men God had sent to the nation. But having rejected

their Messiah, and having heard this parable, they discerned

that it had been told about them.

So, now plans began.. to lay hold of the savior to kill him.

After this some came to Jesus trying with insincere flattery

to trap Him with a question that they thought would place

Jesus between a rock and hard place. It was a political

question having to do with paying taxes.

Our Lord saw through it all rebuking them for their need to

be responsible to both God and man.

Here is Dr. Mitchell, Lk 20:9 on the Unchanging Word Bible

Broadcast.

In Luke 19:41 Jesus rides into Jerusalem. As He did He

begins to weep over it. It is here that the Lord begins to

prophesy concerning the upcoming destruction of

Jerusalem. This prophecy did not come to pass for another

40 years, 70 A.D., when Roman soldiers came and destroyed

both the city and the temple.

Following this prediction, our Lord, having entered the

city, now enters the temple. Seeing the religious commerce

going on in the temple, Jesus admonished the sellers of

animal sacrifices. Our Lord quoted Scripture, Isaiah 56:7

“My House shall be a house of prayer”, and goes on to say,

‘but you have made it a den of thieves’.

Here again is the Lord’s example of using the Word of God

to address another unrighteous situation.

Let’s turn to Lk.19:41 with Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging

Word Bible Broadcast.

From the previous lesson, Jesus continues His instruction

to His disciples.

On their way to Jerusalem, coming to Bethphage and Bethany

near the mount of Olives, the Lord tells two of His

disciples to go into town to fetch a colt and bring it to

Him.

Notice how Luke reveals Jesus’ omniscience as He tells

them where to go to find a colt which had not been been

sat on by anyone. The disciples found it just exactly as

Jesus has said.

All this was done so the Lord could ride into Jerusalem as

the King of Israel fulfilling the O.T. prophecy of Zech.9:9.

However, because the religious rulers had rejected the Lord

Jesus as their Messiah, there would not now be the kingdom

which some were expecting.
