June 30, 2020#128 — The art of the introduction w/ Matt + StephThe brother x sister duo are back at the mic together this week to talk about the art and power of an introduction. They recognize our tendency to play small and vague when introducing ourselves, and we (often women) feel that strong introductions will be perceived as arrogant. Matt suggests that we should get more specific, and come equipped with stories. And Steph commits to stop playing the comparison game when introducing herself among peers. The purpose of an introduction is to provide context that is quick and accurate. The goal is to communicate to the audience what authority you have to speak, and why your voice matters. And if you haven’t been specific or generous in your introductions before, there is power in knowing that you can always re-introduce yourself. “It is a powerful thing to say — this is who I am and this is why my voice matters.”Show Links:I Am Not An Easy Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bFHdkzqSZA Hosted on Acast. Aaron has used this time as an opportunity to consider his role in this shift: “I want Movement108, and I want movr, and I want all of the things that I touch to be a part of helping people in the process of building a new normal.” As the world is constantly changing - Aaron remains optimistic and excited for what is to come - but recognizes the need for grounding and rest: “It’s allowing yourself to move into those zones of recovery, and actual rest, that will all of a sudden spark something that you didn’t know existed.” Steph and Aaron riff on motivation during COVID, and why touching your toes matters: “Do what you can with the information you have available. And then tomorrow do the same. And then the next day do the same. We should apply this to our health and to our movement practice — that is our motivation”. May 05, 2020#116 — Cooking, sweating and laughing together w/ Matt + StephMatt and Steph are back on the pod together this week to discuss how they are individually navigating the limitations of COVID. From how they are eating, hosting online dinner parties and sourcing supplements, to their favourite ways to sweat, to the things they miss the most about pre-COVID physical proximity. “The reason I loved teaching in a studio was because people were coming for something more than just the forms, just the breathing practices, just the meditation — those were always available to them online. They were coming for community, they were coming for connection, they were coming for that sense of accountability. There was something else about a class — I really miss people in the flesh. I really miss teaching”. Both Matt and Steph have experienced the range of emotions related to the pandemic and they talk through how they are coping with the day-to-day and leading through the stages of uncertainty.“My consistent practice is to practice what I preach, and so finding ways to recover faster, finding ways to be more responsible — that is the practice that I am in — and it’s nice to be walking the talk”. April 28, 2020#115 — Surrender, simplicity and possibility w/ Ange HartmanAnge Hartman is the General Manager at Turf and instructor of The Class by Taryn Toomey. Steph and Ange riff on the many big, courageous changes in her life to date — and the parallels between those times of transition and her experience of change amidst COVID. Ange spent 10 years living in the US - from Texas, to LA, to New York. In each place, she moved through uncertainty and loneliness, to establish routines and a feeling of home. In these experiences, she learnt how resilient she was, that everything is part of a bigger journey, and that “Home is where I am”. In all periods of change Ange has experienced similar stages of uncertainty. She moves from denial, frustration and sadness to surrender. In this allowing, she is able to move forward in the work. “As soon as I allowed that process to happen, a new way of being opened up for me”. Ange has worked with the TurF leadership team in handling the disappointments of COVID-19 — letting go of the hope of how things should be and creating space for new possibilities: “It’s that feeling of not being attached to what’s supposed to happen, and then from that place, everything starts to feel like a win.” Ange reflects on her connection to The Class, how she got started, and bringing the practice to Canada at Turf. Especially now, she acknowledges the importance of being at home in our bodies:“We process things through the body, for me, being engaged in my physical body allows me to be fully present.”Listen in to hear how Ange has moved through the anger and disappointment of COVID and into a place of creativity and learning — refusing to put self-development and her goals on hold, and transitioning into the next phase of possibility.Show Links:Ange on the ‘gram: https://www.instagram.com/ange_hartman/TurF on the ‘gram: https://www.instagram.com/turfliving/Groceries from TurF: https://turfgrocery.square.siteWorkout online with TurF: https://www.ourturf.com/pages/classes Hosted on Acast. April 21, 2020#114 — Getting fired and designing a life you love w/ Lana BradshawLana and Steph — two passionate recruiters — discuss the changing recruiting landscape, why we need to take the shame out of getting fired, and designing a life you love based on whatever circumstances you are in. Ten years ago, when Lana began her career in recruiting, things worked a little differently. Networking was done face-to-face, or “belly-to-belly”, and you were expected to get to know candidates beyond the job description. Lana and Steph continue to love their work, and are committed to keeping candidate searches human. Lana has made a practice of embracing change, and she reflects on what candidates need to consider in the current economic landscape during COVID-19: “There will be change. Some of it you can control, and some of it you can’t. Now is an opportunity to get really clear on what matters to you — whether you are in the right role, or with the right company, or with the right team. Whether or not you want to shift careers entirely… Now is the time to embrace all of these changes, and these thoughts, and be really raw and honest with yourself”.
