There are two important, yet frequently overlooked steps that you should take before setting goals:
The first step is self-reflection which we covered in the previous episode of Upskill Talks.
The second step is defining your purpose.
In this episode, Michel shows the importance of aligning your goals with your purpose, and through the story of Carol, an aspiring filmmaker, what can happen when these goals are not in alignment.
Goals aligned with your purpose (defined by you and decided by you) create an incredible motivation to achieve them.
You stay up thinking about these goals, working on them often, finding strategies to make them a reality, jumping over hurdles to get to them. Time passes without you noticing, and you become overcome with a sense of pride.
However, when we set goals based on external forces, such as family, friends, social media and so on, you have a hard time staying focused. You can feel lost, stuck, confused, overwhelmed and it's generally difficult to achieve even the smallest of goals.
People with a sense of purpose are focused, motivated, passionate, can better regulate their emotions and behaviours, are more likely to improve learning, career and business outcomes and are likely to feel more self-assured.
This is why, at UpSkill Community, we create space to reflect and focus on our purpose, so that our goals are attainable and bring joy to our lives.
At UpSkill, we are building a community of UpSkillers, learning and growing together.
