Vikings Happy Hour

The Minnesota Vikings played the San Francisco 49ers last night and even though it mainly the 2’s and 3’s squaring up, it wasn’t what Vikings fans had hoped for in the only home game of the preseason. It was a real snoozer of a game that saw backward steps in the progress of Kellen Mond as a QB2. Sean Mannion was pure Mannion and now the biggest question of the game is if the Vikings bring in some other quarterback to backup Kirk Cousins? 

There were some good performances though from the backups with T.Y. McGill earning the top spot on the night. He was dominate being disruptive at nose tackle, racking up more pressures, sacks, and run stops. He makes talk of D-line depth seem solved. Barring the Vikings signing Ndamukong Suh, he should round out the defensive tackle room just fine.

Players are battling for roster spots and trying to prove that they need to be kept on the roster. There are some rookies that want to make a case for starting. It looks like Ed Ingram may have locked down the starting right guard spot. Can he cement that conclusion? Lewis Cine has been getting it but is still a half step slow adjusting to the NFL’s decision speed. Andrew Booth Jr is exciting at cornerback, but can he learn to be less flag prone, and by that either less grabby or more deceptive when doing it? The Minnesota Vikings are back home after playing preseason game 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders, attended by guest Luke Braun of Locked On Vikings. Your Minnesota Vikings have complied with the NFL’s requirement to cut the roster from 90 players down to 85. According to reports, there were no big surprises. The Vikings released cornerback Tye Smith and waived fullback Jake Bargas, outside linebacker Andre Mintze, defensive lineman Tyarise Stevenson, and receiver Thomas Hennigan. The Minnesota Vikings have travelled to meet the Las Vegas Raiders in their new digs. Football is back, even if it is only the first preseason game. Kirk Cousins sits home because he’s ill. No biggie because he wasn’t going to play much anyways for his protection. That gives Vikings fans a good chance to see Kellen Mond with the first team, right? Nope, Sean Mannion will be getting the start. Mond, Mond, Mond, are you not even good enough to surpass Mannion? This worries fans and tempts the football gods. This is because if Kirk Cousins is taken down due to serious injury, the promise of this season will be quickly wiped out. 

What do you want to see during the game? What do you expect to see? Are there any positions you will watch? Darren and Dave will be going over some of the more interesting ones. Then, what about a competent back-up QB? Is Mannion or Mond the answer? How about the offensive linemen protecting them? Are we going to see improvement in the team's Achilles heal? Dave will explain over how to watch them and find out. This will be the first pregame show of the Vikings’ 2022 season.

A few battles are being fought at Minnesota Vikings Training Camp for starting positions and even to make the team. Players are on the clock with the Vikings' first preseason game away against the Las Vegas Raiders just a few days away. Why are they on the clock? The first roster cuts come next Tuesday. They have until then to increase their standings and chances of making the team, as at least 5 players will be released. Hey all! Vikings Happy Hour is back and we’re stoked that our first preseason game is just around the corner, but first… Craig Peters, the senior editor for Vikings dot com wrote and published the first unofficial depth chart of the 2022 season. Most of the depth chart isn’t surprising, but there was a word used in an odd and unusual way. There were two positions with a capitalized “OR”. The first one was at quarterback, “Kellen Mond OR Sean Mannion” and at wide receiver, “Trishton Jackson OR Jalen Nailor”. Is this a cut line? Has the team signaled that they are only keeping 2 quarterbacks? Is Jackson ahead of Nailor when Nailor was the draftee? Interesting isn’t it?

The Minnesota Vikings will travel to play the Las Vegas Raiders. We don’t know how much the starters will play, or at least key ones like Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson. We do know, however, that rookies such as Andrew Booth Jr. and Brian Asamoah will get a sizable chunk of reps. Are they and the other rookies ready for the spotlight?

We're now in week 3 of training camp, and the Minnesota Vikings are preparing to face the Las Vegas Raiders. Tyler has been riled up over fellow writer, Nate Davis of USA Today having the Vikes sitting at #17 on his preseason power rankings. Really?! Tyler and Dave think that ranking is way too low for an offense with such a capable group of weapons and an improved and healthy defense. Does #17 sound right to you? 

First though, there have been some pleasant surprises in camp so far, and disappointments. Kellen Mond is being given all sorts of opportunities to win the backup quarterback job from Sean Mannion. Kevin O’Connell wants that, but he is still demonstrating the lack of progress needed to secure the job. It is not due to physical abilities, it has to do with his processing and making correct decisions about who to throw to and where to place the ball. This is as the defense rushes and collapses the pocket to get to him for a touch sack. There is hope that with lots of reps in the preseason games, the speed and accuracy of processing will increase. Why, because he’s been sort of unreliable. Do you think he can take that developmental next step?

Then this weekend Kevin O'Connell said in his press conference that there is competition at the center position. Why? Because we keep hearing and reading accounts of Garrett Bradbury being manhandled by Harrison Phillips. If Bradbury’s technique doesn’t improve quickly or Chris Reed can’t spin up fast enough to take his place at center, defensive coordinators will target Bradbury to disrupt the Vikings' offense. That is one thing this team can’t afford if it wants to live up to expectations and hype. Will Bradbury get better or lose his starting job for the second time in two years?
