  • E53: Pocket Protectors [Paying Dalvin. Ranking Kirk]
We start this episode digging into the contract demands of Dalvin Cook and the apparent stalemate between he and the Vikings. With initial reports saying Dalvin Cook wants Christian McCaffrey money, Nick and Eric jump to outline what Dalvin brings to the table and what might be a reasonable contract for Dalvin based on his skillset, durability, and value added to date as measured by PFF WAR. This conversation pointed to the scheme being a driving force of the Vikings running success because Alexander Mattison's performance relative to Dalvin Cook's was very similar in 2019.
After Eric suggested Rick Spielman should call Bill O'Brien to work out a trade for Deshaun Watson, we jumped into PFF's latest QB rankings to discuss the methodology and why Kirk Cousins fell to the middle of the pack after such a strong year in 2019. Nick reminded us that while Kirk graded brilliantly in 2019, his 2018 season was bad across the board and once you average his most recent seasons against his career average, the PFF rankings make a lot more sense.
Our conversation then turned to Eric's article about QB salaries and the implications for the rest of your team. With scheme playing such a huge role in Kirk's success and with the Vikings losing Stefon Diggs, we expect regression from Kirk Cousins in 2020.
To round out the show, we discussed Kirk's place as the most valuable Vikings player in the last decade before playing a fun game of "this or that" with Daunte Culpepper vs Kirk Cousins.

  • GMG - Dalvin Cook Holdout!
Good morning Horners! We all learned that Dalvin Cook is going to holdout for “reasonable” money. What is reasonable? Courtney Cronin reported that figure to be in excess of $16 million, and in the Christian McCaffrey range. Others have said, that Austin Eckler’s contract at around $8 million should be more realistic. The actual number probably falls in between. Good Morning Gjallarhorn’s newest guest, Ryan “Ryno” Johnson goes into the fact that if Cook skips training camp, that under the new collective bargaining agreement, he will not accrue the season, and instead of becoming a free agent next year, become a restricted free agent and most likely defeating any sort of leverage play that he’s trying to get a large payout from.
Drew looks at how with the current situation, these virtual OTAs will impede the progress of needed rookies to develop and be ready for the season. The discussion of which positions need the most actual practice versus just looking at the playbook, zoom calls, and filming workouts to be critiqued and adjustments communicated in a obviously delayed manner versus having the coach chatter in your ear immediately if you do something wrong. Dave talks about which offense of weapons we should expect to see step up this year and make up for production lost, especially if Dalvin Cook isn’t there.
The TCO Performance Center is now open for limited staff to return under new social distancing standards and rules. Who will be there? Hopefully, we will start to see more normal operations as we approach the start of training camp at the end of July. Do you expect a normal timeline for camp and the start of the season?

  • Excited About Cameron Dantzler? - CTPN Quick Shots
In this episode of Climbing The Pocket Network’s Quick Shots, we ask the question are you excited about Cameron Dantzler? Jason Brown of Climbing The Pocket gets together with Matt Fries, one of the network’s premier writers and scout to talk about the young cornerback. Dantzler played at Mississippi State and was nicknamed “the needle”. There is a reason for that, and it has to do with the 6’2” stature and the fact that he only weighs about 185 pounds.
In the show, Matt talks about his strengths and weaknesses when it comes to playing. Talks about the situation of the corner room where the loss of MacKenzie Alexander and Trey Waynes along with Xavier Rhodes has left the Vikings short on veteran corners. Yes, we still have Mike Hughes, Holton Hill, and Chris Boyd, but with the drafting of Jeff Gladney and the focus of this show, Cameron Dantzler the Vikings look to take that next step and improve the secondary. What do you think of the pick? When do you think he’ll see action?
Questions abound, including from PFF’s own George Chahouri [@PFF_George], Eric Eager [@PFF_Eric], and Mike Renner [@PFF_Mike] from their podcast, the PFF Foreca$t. Who do you think Dantzler will compared to? What do you think is the minimal level of comparison and what is his ceiling? Please give us your answers in the remarks. We love to know what you think!

  • Kirk Cousins' Top 10 Throws in 2019 - CTPN Quick Shots
In this episode of Climbing The Pocket Network’s Quick Shots I interview Nick Olson of the Pocket Protectors Podcast about Kirk Cousins’ top 10 throws of 2019. We count them down from number 10 all the way to number 1. Nick describes what is happening in each of these throws, and how difficult they actually are. To me they are nothing but an absolute thing of beauty. The question is can we expect more of the same in 2020? Yes, we know that Stefon Diggs has left the team, and only Adam Thielen remains as an established wide receiver, but we did add Justin Jefferson in the draft with his gaudy numbers last year in college hopefully translates to much of the same in the NFL. Kirk took a big step forward in 2019, and some of these throws in big pressure games show it. With Gary Kubiak returning, and this being the second season of basically his offense, do you expect Cousins success to continue?
Nick goes on to tell us about things he has coming in the future with works on Justin Jefferson, Cameron Dantzler, Jeff Gladney, Ezra Cleveland, and even deep dive into probably the most underrated player in the NFL, Anthony Harris. We look forward to all of those. Is there anybody else you’d like to learn about between now and when training camp eventually starts?
A special thanks goes out to Jason Brown and Jordan Reid who helped contribute to the content of the show.

  • Climbing The Pocket: Episode 190 [Last Dance Part 2]
In second half of this episode, Myles and Yinka discuss the leadership styles seen in Last Dance and whether they could be applied to the Vikings. Yinka discusses Phil Jackson's ability to manage personalities and compares Mike Zimmer in that regard.
Jayson poses the question of whether a team can win consistently if the QB isn't the "alpha" on the team a la Michael Jordan.
Yinka wants to know what Kirk Cousins' defining feature - "what makes you believe in Kirk Cousins?"
To wrap things up, pigs fly as Myles agrees with a point made by Yinka wholeheartedly.

  • Climbing The Pocket: Episode 189 [Last Dance Part 1]
We begin this episode getting caught up with the crew and how everyone is passing the time while the world is on lockdown. Myles and Yinka share opposing perspectives on quarantine driven by their personality types. Myles draws parallels between facemasks and seatbelts and Yinka hopes the world will find a way to come together as we face a common enemy in COVID-19. Jayson discusses how the of America reminds him of characters in Ozarks which prompts Yinka to remind everyone of how patriotic he is.
The conversation then turns to the ESPN documentary, The Last Dance. Myles wonders how Jordan would have been accepted in our current media era. Myles points to Jordan's drinking, gambling, golfing, and cigar smoking as proof athletes can have other interests outside of sports and still be productive on the field or court. Jayson compares Lebron James to "Goliath" and says while Michael Jordan is the GOAT, Lebron James is probably a better basketball player.
We wrap this episode with a discussion of the leadership styles portrayed through the documentary.
