Ep. 171: Michael Cerveris (Broadway Actor/Musician) with co-host Stephen Bluhm

Michael Cerveris grew up in Huntington, West Virginia, the son of a college music professor father and a mother who taught dance.  They met at the famed Julliard Music School and raised their three children to follow their creative instincts in every direction. For Michael, that meant parallel roads in music and acting from his earliest years.

Arriving in New York in the early 80’s, Cerveris fell in with the downtown and experimental theater crowd performing in raw spaces and storefronts, subletting an Alphabet City apartment from avant guard composer/pianist Blue Gene Tyranny and exploring the original east village punk and antifolk scenes while playing music mostly by and for himself. Early influences were bands like the Replacements and Pixies and Husker Du.

An acting job on the television series Fame as british guitar student Ian Ware brought him to LA, where he began writing and playing and forming a series of bands during the heyday of the Scream Club and the british goth invasion in southern California. But after seeing the Smiths and a trip to England in the early 90s, Michael increasingly found himself influenced by Johnny Marr and early shoegazer bands like Ride and Slowdive with his own music becoming more melancholy and cinematic.

In 1993, Cerveris returned to New York to make his Broadway debut as Tommy in the theatrical version of the Who’s groundbreaking rock opera. Pete Townshend not only approved his casting, but brought Michael to London. Telling him “I can’t teach you how to act this part, but I can teach you how to be a rock star,” Townshend brought Cerveris into his private studio to record on what was to become his Psychoderelict album, later bringing him along on the Psychoderelict Tour to sing a suite of songs from Tommy, causing Who fan Eddie Vedder to ask him “man, how do you sing like that 8 times a week?” Cerveris started a new acoustic/electric band, lame, with his cast mate Alice Ripley and began performing a late night residency at the Sin-e Club alternating nights with Jeff Buckley in the poet singer’s final months. He also ended up in clubs around town with Townshend (and, once, John Entwistle) playing impromptu shows at places like the China Club.

Townshend also created an accidental introduction to Bob Mould when Cerveris brought the Who guitarist to see Mould play a solo show at the Academy in NY. A friendship developed and Bob sat in with Michael’s band for a cover of Mission of Burma’s That’s When I Reach For My Revolver. Later, in 1998, after Cerveris had finished his first stint as the “internationally ignored song stylist” title character in Hedwig And The Angry Inch (replacing the show’s creator, John Cameron Mitchell), Mould asked Cerveris to join his  Last Dog And Pony Show tour of the US and UK playing rhythm guitar and backing vocals.

On that tour, Cerveris became good friends and sat in with tour mates Varnaline and Mercury Rev. During that tour and after, he made friends and played with Ken Stringfellow (Posies/REM), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney), Charlotte Hatherly (Ash), Frank Black, The Breeders, Steve Shelly (Sonic Youth), and Laura Cantrell, many of whom appear on his debut solo album Dog Eared. That album, released in February 2004 was recorded by Adam Lasus at Fireproof Studios, Brooklyn and was mixed by Nick Brine at Rockfield, Wales (where Cerveris had recorded an unreleased album, Hinterlands, with his then band, Retriever).  Greg Calbi mastered the album at Stirling Masters, NY

2004 was also the year Cerveris received the first of his two Tony Awards, this one for playing John Wilkes Booth in Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins on Broadway.

Ep. 170: Chris Cohen (Musician/Producer Deerhoof & Cryptacize)

Chris Cohen, born in Los Angeles in 1975, is an indie rock and psychedelic pop artist known for lush, introspective songs like “Damage” and “Laughing.” A former member of Deerhoof and Cryptacize, he’s released acclaimed solo albums including Paint a Room (2024). The Chris Cohen tour 2025 spans the US, UK, France, and Denmark.

Chris Cohen’s songs initially sound easy. They’re each tiny jewels that unfurl at a leisurely pace, but dig a little deeper and you’ll reach a melancholy core. His previous albums — 2012’s Overgrown Path, 2016’s As If Apart and 2019’s Self Titled — were built from lush, blurry tracks that embedded themselves in your subconscious, like they’d always been there.

Paint a Room (out July 12, 2024) is his first album in five years and his debut for Hardly Art. If Cohen’s meanings have previously lurked inside the tessellated musical layers he built alone, they are newly clear and resonant here, animated and underscored for the first time by a band playing in real time. This is Cohen communicating with friends not only through his deep understanding of groove, harmony, and hook but also with his listeners through songs that croon of our uneasy little era.

Chris was a member of Deerhoof, The Curtains, Cryptacize and Natural Dreamers before releasing music under his own name. He’s toured and/or recorded with Kurt Vile, White Magic, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Danielson, Cass McCombs, as well as produced and engineered records by Weyes Blood, Fievel Is Glauque, Gun Outfit, Sam Evian, Marina Allen, Le Ren, and many more.

Ep.169: Annie Golden (Singer/Actress)

I had a great talk with Annie Golden. She is such a legend! We talked about her days with “The Shirts” and how Milo’s Forman discovered her at CBGB’s, and cast her in his film “Hair”. We got a bit into Sondheim and her decades long Broadway career, and talked about her connection with Joe Iconis (Be More Chill) who wrote a musical for her called “Broadway Bounty Hunter”. This was such an honor for a Broadway freak like myself.

Golden began her career as the lead singer of The Shirts(which headlined CBGB's in the late 70s). During the early 1990s she performed as part of the duo Golden Carillo with Frank Carillo. They released three albums; Fire in Newtown, Toxic Emotion, and Back for More. She then returned to The Shirts.

Since then she has performed solo and with a band. She performs a revue of songs from her stage career along with originals called Annie Golden's Velvet Prison. In 1984, her song "Hang Up the Phone" was featured on the soundtrack of the film Sixteen Candles.

While with The Shirts she was discovered by Miloš Forman who gave her a part in Hair. She had featured roles on Cheers and Miami Vice. On Broadway, she has appeared in the 1977 revival of Hair, Leader of the Pack, Ah, Wilderness!, On the Town and The Full Monty. She had the title role in the workshop of the short-lived adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie. She also played the role of Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's musical Assassins Off-Broadway in 1990-1991. In 2003 she joined other original Off-Broadway cast members in a Reprise! (Los Angeles) concert production of Assassins. In 2007, she was stand-by for the two comic villain roles in the musical Xanadu on Broadway.

Golden has the distinct honor of having appeared in three separate versions of Hair; a Broadway revival in 1977, the motion picture in 1979 and a special benefit performance concert in 2004. Golden was the voice of Marina in the Don Bluth film The Pebble and the Penguin. In recent years, she has been seen in commercials for Coinstar, in which she portrays The Tooth Fairy.

Ep. 168: Andrew Fleming (Filmmaker) focuses on Hamlet 2, The Craft, and more

I had the privilege of chatting with Andrew Fleming who has directing a few of my favorite films including “Hamlet 2” and “Dick”. We focused more on “Hamlet 2” but got into much of his amazing work.

Andrew Fleming is a highly accomplished director and screenwriter, most recently known for executive producing and directing the pilot of the hit Emmy-nominated Netflix series, Emily in Paris. A frequent collaborator of Darren Star, Fleming recently directed the pilot for Star's new series Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris. Fleming also directed the pilot and served as Executive Producer for Netflix's recent hit series Insatiable. In addition, he wrote and directed the 2018 feature Ideal Home starring Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan. Previously, he directed and co-wrote three films: Hamlet 2 (which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival), the political comedy Dick, (a satire about the Nixon Watergate scandal, starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Will Ferrell) as well as The Craft, starring Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. For the independent feature Threesome (which also premiered at Sundance), Fleming served as both director and sole screenwriter. He directed the feature film Nancy Drew starring Emma Roberts, and before that the comedy The In-Laws, teaming Michael Douglas with Albert Brooks. Fleming studied filmmaking at New York University's film school, where P.P.T, one of his three award-winning student films, earned him a fellowship at Warner Brothers upon graduation.

About Reverend Billy

The character of Reverend Billy was developed in the mid 1990s by actor and playwright, William Talen.

Talen grew up in small towns throughout Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He left home at 16, moving east with Charles and Patricia Gaines, a writer and painter who encouraged him as an artist. Talen began to perform his poems and stories, hitch-hiking from Philadelphia to New York to San Francisco.

Talen’s chief collaborator in developing the Reverend Billy character was the Reverend Sidney Lanier,  vicar of  St. Clement’s in the 1960s, an Episcopal Church in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. In an effort to increase attendance at St. Clement’s, Lanier had torn out the altar and pews, inviting actors to perform scenes from plays by his cousin Tennessee Williams and Terrence McNally, and founding the American Place Theater. Lanier described Talen as “more of a preacher with a gift for social prophecy than an actor.” In the early 1990s Talen moved with Lanier to New York City from the San Francisco Bay Area, branding his act as a “new kind of American preacher”

The Reverend Billy character debuted on the sidewalk at Times Square in 1998, outside the Disney Store, where he proclaimed Mickey Mouse to be the anti-Christ. He was arrested multiple times outside the Disney Store, where he duct-tapped Mickey Mouse to a cross. Reverend Billy’s sermons decried the evils of consumerism and the racism of sweatshop labor, and what Talen saw as the loss of neighborhood spirit in Rudolph Giuliani‘s New York.

The Reverend Billy character isn’t so much a parody of a preacher, as a preacher motif used to blur the lines between performance and religious experience. “It’s definitely a church service,” Talen explained but, he added, it’s “a political rally, it’s theater, it’s all three, it’s none of them.” Alisa Solomon, the theater critic at the Village Voice, said of Reverend Billy’s persona, “The collar is fake, the calling is real.” Along with the Church of Stop Shopping, they have been referred to by academics as “performance activism,” “carnivalesque protest,” and “artivists”

I had the pleasure of interviewing Ruth Leitman. I was a huge fan of her documentary “Wildwood, N.J and it was an honor to chat with her in general. This documentary really opened my mind to the bad historical realities of the fight for the right to have abortions. The doc offers an important history lesson overall and especially in the past years on the fight to keep abortion legal. About Ruth Leitman

Ruth Leitman has a BFA in Film and Photography from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Through her company Ruthless Films, Ruth Leitman has directed six feature documentaries. Her films focus on women and those whose lives have faced a lack of opportunity, but who are survivors. Her work has received funding from Rockefeller Foundation, TriBeCa Film Institute, Paul Robeson Fund, Illinois Humanities Council and Fledgling Fund. In 2020 she was awarded the 2020 City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Esteemed Artist in Film and Media. Her Southern Gothic film Alma (1998) won the Documentary Feature Jury Prize at Hamptons Film Festival, screened at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, SXSW, Director’s Guild of America and the Whitney Biennial. Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs, her film Lipstick & Dynamite(2005) won the Documentary Storytelling Prize at Nantucket Film Festival; was released theatrically; and was broadcast on SHOWTIME. Lipstick was featured on Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and NPR’s Fresh Air and Morning Edition.

In summer 2009, Leitman’s first documentary Wildwood, NJ. (1994) became a youtube viral hit, featured on hundreds of best of year-end lists and blogs including Jezebel, Urban Outfitters, G4’s Attack of the Show, and VH-1’s Best Week Ever. The film became a symbol of ‘90’s zeitgeist girl culture, and was appropriated for pop culture media from the music videos of Lana Del Rey to the fashion runways of Milan. Wildwood was invited to screen at Hot Doc’s fifteen-year anniversary festival in 2013 and featured in British Film Institute, Sight and Sound Magazine’s- The Female Gaze: 100 Overlooked Films Directed by Women, which sparked a tour of the UK in summer 2016

Tony & Janina’s American Wedding(2010), an immigration story, premiered at The Chicago International Film Festival, winning a Jury Prize and became a clear agent for change and a NY Times International breaking news story when the family in the film was reunited in the US.

She was a director on the Kartemquin Films produced series Hard Earned for Al Jazeera America, which was nominated for an International Documentary Association Award and won the Alfred I. duPont Columbia Journalism Award in 2016.

Ep. 165: The Effigies (Chicago Punk)

The Effigies are one of Chicago's oldest and longest-running punk bands. The band formed in early 1980 and consistently played and recorded throughout the 1980s.

In 2004, The Effigies returned with 3 of the 4 original members. They released their first album in over 20 years in 2007. In 2010, it was announced that original line-up was to play a show at the Double Door to coincide with the reissue of the Busted At Oz compilation but this appearance was cancelled when original guitarist Earl Letiecq announced he had no intention of playing with his former band. After that, band activities ceased. On August 26, 2023, vocalist John Kezdy died from injuries he sustained after he collided with a parked Amazon delivery vehicle while he was bicycling. After his death, it was revealed that the band was in the process of planning new activity. In 2024, it was announced that the band would be releasing a new album along with a reissue of their first LP, "For Ever Ground". The band also announced a return to the stage, with the original rhythm section of Paul Zamost and Steve Economou joined by guitarist Andy Gerber and guitarist/vocalist Geoff Sabin.

Solomon Brager grew up with accounts of their great-grandparents’ escape from Nazi Germany, told over and over until their understanding of self was bound up with the heroic details of their ancestors’ exploits. Their great-grandmother related how her husband, a boxing champion, thrashed Joseph Goebbels and cleared beer halls of Nazis with his fists, how she broke him out of an internment camp and carried their children over the Pyrenees mountains. But that story was never the whole picture; zooming out, everything becomes more complicated.

Alongside the Levis’ propulsive journey across Europe and to the United States, Brager distills fascinating research about the Holocaust and connected periods of colonial history. Heavyweight asks us to consider how the patterns of history emerge and reverberate, not as a simple chain of events but in haunting layers. Confronting the specters of violence as both historian and descendent, this book is an exploration of family mythology, intergenerational memory, and the mark the past makes on the present.

In conversation with works by Rebecca Hall, Nora Krug, Rutu Modan, and Leela Corman, Heavyweight will contribute to the collective work of Holocaust studies and the chronicle of woven human stories.
