About DAVE THOMAS David William Thomas, C.M., was born May 20, 1949, in St. Catharines, Ontario. His mother was a Scottish-born church organist and composer; his father, a Welsh-born medical ethicist, headed the Philosophy Department at McMaster University. His younger brother Ian is a Canadian singer-songwriter.

Dave's first stage appearance was in the Toronto production of Godspell — alongside Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, and Paul Shaffer. He worked briefly as a copywriter for McCann Erickson, writing Coca-Cola commercials in Toronto and New York, before leaving advertising to join the Toronto cast of Second City. The Emmy-winning SCTV grew out of that stage show, launching a forty-year career in film and television. In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from McMaster University. In 2020 he was appointed to the Order of Canada — the country's highest civilian honor — and life-size statues of Dave and Rick Moranis as Bob and Doug McKenzie were installed at the Rogers ICE District in Edmonton. SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of. Streams 10-30-26 . SCTV is an influential Canadian sketch comedy show that was kind of the Canadian version of Saturday Night Live. Short for "Second City Television", SCTV ran intermittently between 1976 and 1984 about a fictional television station. It was created as an offshoot of Toronto's Second City troupe. Eventually it played on American TV airing on NBC from 1981-1983. This doc explores SCTV's rise & legacy through cast interviews and a Toronto reunion, revealing how the sketch comedy series became influential and launched comedy icons while examining the lasting creative partnerships. Featuring comedy icons like Catherine O'Hara (RIP), Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, Joe Flaherty (RIP), and John Candy (RIP). Tom Hanks is a massive fan of the show, too. This doc connects right in with the other Toronto comedy doc this year - You Had to Be There (in theaters now and estimated to Stream on Nov. 20th 2026 about Toronto's Godspell. The film about SCTV is a funny and heartfelt celebration of how a scrappy Canadian show changed comedy forever.

Michael Apted’s The Long Way Home, a revealing, rollicking portrait of the Soviet underground rock legend Boris Grebenshchikov, who became the first to record in the West during the early, optimistic days of Glasnost—not quite believing he would collaborate with Dave Stewart, Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, and Ray Cooper—was released to critical acclaim after its broadcast in the UK and premiere at Sundance, but has largely disappeared these past 30 years. By 1988 Apted was already a hot director both in fiction (Coal Miner’s Daughter, Gorillas in the Mist) and nonfiction (the legendary  Up series and Bring on the Night, his concert film about the making of Sting’s first solo album). Apted’s astonishing ability to get people to open up led to this complex study of an artist who seized a moment of unimaginable freedom to make new music with new musicians, yet who found members of his longtime band, Aquarium, feeling abandoned and his longtime Russian fans uncertain about his English-language songs when he returned home to perform them. Thanks to Steven Lawrence, the film’s producer, THE LONG WAY HOME: REMASTERED AND EXPANDED (2026) will now have a second life in this newly remastered edition. In addition, together with Susanne Rostock, the film’s editor, he has created an epilogue charting Grebenshchikov’s fate following the release of his US album Radio Silence as an exile and an outspoken critic of Putin’s war in Ukraine. Steven Lawrence (Producer/ New Epilogue Co-Director)Steven Lawrence is a producer-director who has been making documentaries for over 30 years about artists, activists and everyday heroes - from underground Soviet rockers, to a Senegalese rapper fighting female genital cutting, to cat rescuers in Brooklyn, and scientists racing to save the human microbiome. As a producer his work includes three feature docs in collaboration with Michael Apted, including THE LONG WAY HOME: REMASTERED AND EXPANDED (2026)  and MARRIED IN AMERICA. He created the International Emmy-award winning series BORN IN THE USSR producing the first film, AGE 7 IN THE USSR. Among his other producing credits are THE FURIOUS FORCE OF RHYMES; SARABAH (Movies That Matter Golden Butterfly award), and Heddy Honigmann’s 100 UP. His directing credits include TELL TCHAIKOVSKY THE NEWS: ROCK IN RUSSIA for MTV; the interactive documentary series VIS à VIS series for PBS; THE CAT RESCUERS, winner of the 2018 Hamptons International Film Festival animal rights award, and THE INVISIBLE EXINCTION (with Sarah Schenck).

Ep. 231: John Cameron Mitchell (Director/Actor/Writer) Hedwig 25th Anniversary Film Screening

JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL wrote, directed, and starred in the rock musical and film Hedwig and the Angry Inch for which he won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, a special Tony for his performance, an Obie Award, the Best Director award at the Sundance Festival and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, along with 25 other awards.

He wrote and directed the improv-based film Shortbus; directed the film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole, which garnered a Best Actress Oscar nom for Nicole Kidman; and co-wrote and directed the YA punk romance How to Talk to Girls at Parties, starring Kidman and Elle Fanning. He executive-produced (with Gus Van Sant) Jonathan Caouette’s Tarnation, which was the most decorated documentary of 2004.

John was in the original casts of Tony-winning Big River, The Secret Garden, and Six Degrees of Separation; as well as Hello Again (Drama Desk nom.) and Larry Kramer’s The Destiny of Me (Obie Award). TV roles include: "Girls," "Shrill," "The Good Fight," "Mozart in the Jungle," "Yellowjackets," "The Sandman," "City on Fire," and Joe Exotic in "Joe vs Carole." He wrote and directed two scripted podcast series: the musical Anthem: Homunculusstarring Glenn Close, Cynthia Erivo, Patti Lupone, and Laurie Anderson; and the satirical sitcom Cancellation Island starring Holly Hunter.

He has received the Dorothy Hirshon Award for Cinematic Achievement from New School University, the Excellence in Acting Award from the Provincetown Film Festival, and the New York State Senate Democrats’ Special Human Rights Award. He is presently working to create a nonprofit artists residency, Temple House, in his new home in New Orleans, and is presently developing LSM, a play about anti-Nazi Surrealist artist Claude Cahun, two feature films based on the lives of Allen Ginsburg and AIDS activist Peter Staley, and a memoir entitled A Heart Held Outside the Body.

Alex Pearlman is a comedian from the Philadelphia-area who uses the username pearlmania500 on TikTok. He has built a large following on the platform, his follower count has been reported in the millions. His content style combines comedic commentary, reaction to current events, local issues (especially around Philadelphia), politics, and social issues, often delivering them in an informal, “slice of life” tone that resonates with people seeking both humor and explanation. One noteworthy moment in his TikTok career was a video he made about the collapse of I-95, which went viral and drew enough attention that he was invited by the governor’s office of Pennsylvania to attend a press conference about the collapse. Pearlman co-hosts a  podcast titled Too Many Tabs with Pearlmania500, together with his wife (“Mrs. Pearlmania”). An emphasis on everyday experiences, local issues, current events, and politics, but from a perspective many viewers find accessible. Use of comedic framing—humor, sarcasm, occasional shouting or exasperation—as part of his delivery. I am mike watt and I am the son of a sailor, born in 1957 in virginia and work bass for a living. I came to san pedro in the los angeles harbor of california when I was eight cuz of my pop's work (machinist mate in the navy) and met d boon there when we were bof twelve. his ma put me on bass... part of the punk movement, in 1980 we formed the minutemen, doing my first recordings (w/sst records) and touring (w/black flag) 'til we all lost d boon in 1985 (our best album "double nickels on the dime" released the year before). after that I did fIREHOSE w/george hurley and ed fROMOHIO for seven and a half years. I would do my first mike watt "solo" album in 1995 called "ball-hog tug boat?" for columbia records that had fortyeight people on it. I would work bass for other bands like porno for pyros, j mascis + the fog and for 126 months, the stooges plus also more recently tav falco, flipper and mssv. I would write, record and preform three operas, "contemplating the engine room" (1996), "the secondman's middle stand" (2005) and "hyphenated-man" (2010), still gig regularly w/my secondmen and missingmen, soon to have new albums w/bof groups. I have had the hoot page (mikewatt.com) up since 1996 and it contains tour diaries and information on all the projs I've done and continue to be part of like the jumpstarted plowhards. twice a week when I can I do 'the watt from pedro show' (twfps.com) since 2001. my next tour (seventyfourth one) is sep/oct of 2026 on the west coast w/mike baggetta and johnny herndon as casa sueno.

Work Crush is the new synth pop group led by Stephen Bluhm, joined at live dates by Scott Kellerhouse on bass (Aphasia Minor, Hellish Cashstrap) and Ethan Kelly on keys.

Mike Watt, punk pioneer as co-founder of Minutemen, joins on the first Work Crush single, Emotional Plea, out digitally August 28 on Vintage Annals Archive. Set to a driving disco beat, Emotional Plea cuts deep to the desperation so many people are feeling in the face of a heartless and violent administration, asking “what is our dark destiny allowing this to be?” Watt elevates the track with his signature melodic bass, and Alex Wernquest (Camp Saint Helene) provides the rhythm, which was recorded along with Bluhm’s vocal at Wernquest’s Catskill, NY studio Basement Floods. Bluhm sings passionately, and adds classic synth sounds and a Nile Rodgersish chucking guitar. Work Crush refuses to use generative AI, and Bluhm asked musician and illustrator Steve Teare (Flat Mary Road) to create the evocative artwork, a child playing with a toy military plane.

Michael attended Gallaher Elementary, Beverly Hills Junior High School and Huntington East High School in his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. He also graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and received a Bachelor’sdegree in the Humanities with an emphasis in Theater Studies from Yale University, graduating cum laude. He holds an Honorary Doctorate in the Humanities from Wilson College. Michael is an active supporter of the MS Society and several animal welfare organizations among his many charitable pursuits.

Chris Candy

Chris Candy is a Canadian-born actor trained at The Groundlings, Second City, and Upright Citizens Brigade. Chris produced the Emmy Award-winning, five-time Emmy-nominated documentary John Candy: I Like Me, a loving deep dive into the life of his father. He hosts the weekly music program Neuz Pollution on KXLU 88.9 FM.

Candy has acted in and produced films that have played at the Napa Valley Film Festival, Raindance, and TIFF. He also produced the short documentary Kinda Crazy, about Rip City Skates. He can be seen in the film Adulthood, starring Josh Gad, and most recently directed Coldplay’s lyric video for “All My Love” and the music video for “The Karate Kid.”

Clark Duke

Clark Duke is an actor, writer and director best known for Clark and Michael, The Office, SEX DRIVE, KICKASS, and HOT TUB TIME MACHINE. Originally from Arkansas, Clark attended film school at Loyola Marymount University. His thesis film was the pilot for Clark and Michael. Clark was most recently seen alongside Vince Vaughn, Liam Hemsworth, and John Malkovich in his feature directorial debut, ARKANSAS. Clark also produced and cowrote the film, an adaptation of John Brandon’s acclaimed novel. STRANGLEHOLD is Clark’s sophomore feature as a writer, producer, and director. His upcoming third feature is an adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s novel, YOU DON’T LOVE ME YET.
