What does loving your spouse look like to you? First let’s examine how you love. Is it:
Self-giving
Love without requiring much or anything back
Doing things because you want to
You love to do nice things for your spouse because it makes you happy
Self-serving:
You love but you require praise or thanks
You do things because your spouse expects it and if you don’t do XYZ there will be trouble or an argument
You love to do nice things for your spouse because it makes him/her happy
Love Interrupters: Make your own list, here are some of

Work Issues / Homeschool Issues
Kids
Household chores
Finances
Time
Ground rules for arguing:
Separate the problem from the person
I hate you – goes a long way in damaging a relationship
Character assignation
You always…
I love you but – goes a long way in telling your spouse – don’t listen to whatever is being said because I’m not going to like it
Arguing Fair:
Better but not perfect: I’m upset about xyz and what can we do to make sure this doesn’t happen again or at least not as often
Watch your tongue
Do not accuse unjustly
Ask a question that is not setting up the other person to fail
Loving Your Spouse and Preventing Marriage Problems:
Be steeped in prayer – prayer is conversation with God
Be steeped in the word – know what God has to say to you – daily. Do you have a Bible? Do you read from it daily with a devotional?
Say the word JESUS – and GOD daily – just uttering the name of the Almighty can be such a blessing when we don’t have time to pray.
Pray for love – the Lord will give it to you abundantly for your spouse!

My husband once told me, very early on in our marriage that he could never make me happy, and that true happiness only comes from God. It was very true, because I kept trying to find happiness in him – and as a human, he kept disappointing me. In this episode we examine love, discuss relationships, self-giving vs. self-serving, and we’ll explore what love looks like to you and how you can be happy in a relationship with some of the right tools.

Loving your spouse involves not comparing this person and realizing the following…
We are all human – “news flash” – just in case you didn’t know
We are not married to the hallmark version of what a real man or real woman looks like
If you think there is someone better out there for you – think again
You made a commitment to marriage and a promise to each other – so make it work
There is no such thing as too late.
Keys to Loving your spouse and happy marriage:
Grow together spiritually
Know walks in the park, romantic dinners, quiet get-a-ways – all very nice but not the key to growing
Be thankful for each other as a gift from God.
Thank God for each other
Tell each other, “I love you,” often!
The key to fixing any problem is to fix yourself
Seek forgiveness – if you have offended your spouse, apologize and ask forgiveness – sometimes people don’t even know why their spouse is angry – so find out why

What is love? What is true love? With the hype over what real love is – many have made a fortune. We only have to look at the cable channels that focus on love stories, the novels which are a billion a dollar year industry. But is that real love? In this episode, Felice explores human love and the basis of love which is conditional and compares it to God’s everlasting love.

Human love is based upon performance – it is not bad – it is just the way it is… we love people based upon these things and I’m sure you can add more to the list:
What they do for us –
Are they kind or loving
How do they act when we are around
What do they say to us?
What do they say about us to others
How they look, smell
What they give us
How we feel when we are around them
Are we happy?
Do they make us feel excited or energetic
Do we look forward to seeing them
Are we sad when they are not around or do we miss them
Do we hate to be apart?
How much they love us
Do you hear kind words or affectionate words from these people
Do you know by the gifts or blessings extended toward us
God’s Love Is:
God is love
God’s love is perfected in us.
There is no fear in love.
Perfect love casts out all fear.
Love is patient.
Love is kind.
Love rejoices in what is right.
Love bears al things.
Love believes all things.
Love hopes all things.
Love endures all things.
Love never ends.
Faith, hope and love abide, but the greatest of these is love

Meredith God’s Love
Provides (through prayer, promises to claim, daily provision)
(II Peter 1:2-4)
I Thessalonians 5:16-18
Matthew 7:7-11
Protects
Psalm 32:7-9
Psalm 91
Shepherds (nurtures, leads)
Psalm 23
Died while we were still his enemies
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
Prepares a place for us
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2)

Felice: God’s love –
By His very essence – God is love – 1 John 4:16
John 4:8 – true faith believes God’s love even when God chooses not to intervene.
God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love – Psalms: 103:8
Giving us life
Knowing us before we were born – the number of hairs on our head – he is a personal God – he cares about us. Jeremiah Chapter 1: 4-5
Dying for us – eternal life – opening the gates of heaven: John 3:16-For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 15: 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Speaking to us – the ability to hear God’s voice via the Scriptures and prayer
God takes care of us: 2 Timothy 3:16 – “God-breathed.” His Word sometimes gives us a warning, a word of encouragement, or a lesson for life. It’s ”His-story”–written with love as God’s guide for life, “so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” – The Good Shepherd . John 10:11

Begin with Prayer – what does HE want you to do
Change isn’t comfortable – takes time and requires prayer and patience.
Change begins one person at a time – usually with ME
Change little things first – what is the most manageable?
Make a list of bigger changes and work toward these give yourself a timeline
Meredith’s List:
Start the Day with Prayer & Scripture
Post everyone’s schedule & family schedule in a visible place. Stick to a schedule. Wake up early.
Get rid of negative talk (no put-downs, sarcasm, doubts, fears, gloom). Replace with encouragement, faith, positive, uplifting
Try something new together as a family (simple project, art, music, singing, new board game, walk, bike ride)
Read aloud together everyday or at least once a week.
