Ask Kati Anything ep. 138 | Your mental health podcast, with Kati Morton, LMFT

Today’s Kati talks about coming to terms with repressed memories and the fact that they may never be complete. She also explains how she works with people who feel like they are behind in life, the importance of eye contact in therapy, and why we can crave negative attention. She also discusses what she does when a client self injures in session, how we can know if it’s safe to start exercising again in ED recovery, and why we can sometimes feel full and sick when we haven’t eaten very much. Finally, she talks about weight gain in ED recovery and how to mentally manage it.

Audience questions

  1. I have been in therapy for three years now to help me work through CSA and my insane workload from university (I’ll be graduating in a month thankfully). I didn’t know anything like that had happened to me until...
  2. I was just wondering as a therapist what approaches you would use when working with clients who feel like they are behind in life due to societal pressures? I ask this as I sometimes feel like I'm somewhat behind compared to people of my age in relation to relationships...
  3. Why do I crave negative attention? I have always had a fascination with / get excited about the idea of punishment or “getting into trouble.” I also tend to do things to draw negative attention in therapy. For example, the most recent round of therapy sessions I...
  4. Hi Kati and community, How important do you think is eye contact in therapy? Are you 'getting the most out of therapy' even if you never establish eye contact (over a longer period like one or two years)? The sensitive nature of the therapy setting makes me feel rather vulnerable and...
  5. My question is, what would you do if a client was self-injuring in session? I have really bad eczema on my hands and if I clench my fists, all the wounds split open. I have found myself doing this in session when we are talking about hard...
  6. About ED recovery: when do I know that it's time to exercise again? Are there "signs" I can look out for? Like having a regular period
  7. I have an eating disorder, anorexia. The problem is that despite my lack of intake I keep gaining weight. I’m 46 years old and am wondering if that’s why. I have a registered dietitian and an eating disorder therapist and even though I’m trying to work on recovery, this constant weight gain is really distressing for me...
  8. Kati, I’m trying to recover from an eating disorder, but it’s really difficult because whenever I eat, I just feel sick and overly full even though there’s no way I could be full because I’m not eating enough to warrant that. Will I ever stop feeling overly full and sick and exhausted after eating? It triggers me to purge not to lose weight, but just because I feel...
