Washed Up Walkons

In todays show we start with an obscure look back at the 2020 season, the Northwestern game in particular, and why that game is a good example of ran/pass ratio that KF wants to avoid. We reference Lester's time at the podium from last week on several topics here including balancing the Offense, how he addresses areas to work on with detail vs KF's shield approach, and more. We get into a conversation about QB misses the last few years and how having Lester at OC/QB coach could turn the tide for recruiting and development. We touch again on how Iowa's offense will look different next season when they have more time to install, and we finish with what we have to see from Iowa this weekend if they want to win the game.

The Hawks had the week off, so we hope you enjoyed your first of 2 stress free weekends this fall Hawkeye Nation, but there was still plenty to talk about from games all across the country. In this episode we spend some time on Ashton Jeanty and the Broncos and compare his current stats to some of the all time numbers at the RB position, we talk Bama Georgia which lived up to the hype as the marquee matchup of the weekend, we recap some of the betting from Ward's Winners, and some of the other B1G action this weekend. We have a back and forth about the UNLV situation and how guys are now quitting mid season, with a team thats relevant because of NIL reasons. We also provide thoughts on the latest in the Beefy 5 layer burrito situation..

In todays show we discuss how players use the BYE week to get rid of both physical and mental stress and reset for the rest of the season. How do players best manage the week off of playing to fill their cups, rest their bodies, and get their minds right for the upcoming game? What does lifting in the weight room look like during the Bye, how do schedules change if at all? And what is the message around the facility after a big win for the pig with the trip to The Shoe looming? We also discuss Jermari Harris and his impact for the Hawks so far, and much more.

We got to hear from the Coordinators during this Week 5 BYE for the Hawks and they did not disappoint! Lester was the highlight, as he spoke with nuance and explanation that Iowa fans haven't heard maybe ever. Parker came with some spitfire and some stats to back up the Defense which may have been unfairly judged at this point, and Levar brought detail from the special teams room that allowed some fun insight to Dakin, Stevens, and the coverage units. We talk about reframing how we think about this Offense as Coach Lester provided great perspective on how little they have had time wise to get this thing rolling, and about Lester developing QBs better moving forward to fix an all time soft spot in the Ferentz era. We discuss Parker's macro view of the Defense, the CB battle, and Castro, and finish with Woods and why the fans should feel great about special teams moving forward.

Floyd is back in Iowa City! The Hawks came out a bit slow, following the tale of to halves blueprint that they happened to have followed each of the 4 games this season. We discuss why coming out of halftime the boys looked like a completely different team both Offensively and Defensively, which allowed them to seal the deal early in the 4th quarter. Is Kaleb Johnson a legitimate Heisman contender? Has the D fixed their issues? How are we continuing to run the ball without a vertical pass game? All of these questions plus more in this show.

Today we jump in to multiple topics of discussion that range from why we were so motivated in 2015, vs the shaky infrastructure of 2014 at Iowa, the Hawkeye Championship, going on the road for the first time this season, the amenities of Minneapolis, what a primer is and why they do it, and the problems with how football teams approach pre-game.

We break out our pre Minnesota episode with some fun talk of Kevin's training, memories from the Minnesota matchup specifically 2015 and the loudest I-O-W-A chant there's ever been, where Minnesota has stacked up nationally through 3 weeks and why Iowa could be a much different test. We talk GBone's top 25, if certain coverages would better suit Iowa's secondary to protect against some of the big plays that they have allowed, and some beefy five layer action. We brush over how big of a game this could be for the emotional swing of the fanbase for this season, and dive into Ward's Winners as well.

On Todays episode we have discussion over the RB room and how already before week 4 we have seen the dynamics shift, how KJ is a Heisman hopeful, and how Jaz took opportunity by the balls. Some history Lessons by KF including a Ray Lewis Comp, a flashback to Arkansas St in 2009, and more. Why you should feel confident about Iowa's Defense fixing the big plays and tightening things up for the B1G slate. And lastly, why we think Brendan Sullivan will get more time as the season progresses and the reason he can be effective.

We sit down to break down the game from Saturday as the Hawks come back from a halftime deficit to beat Troy 38-21. A game that many walked away from with a weird inconclusive feeling. We discuss why this win doesn't 'feel good' even though the stat sheets say differently. We talk about the blunders on the Defensive side of the ball, where we've seen big plays hurt the Hawks in back to back weeks, and a huge mishap on special teams which is usually the area that Iowa dominates in. We break down the Offense and how Kaleb Johnson is currently a Heisman contender, and how Cade actually played well despite a general feeling of lackluster-ness from his position. We talk passing game and how it needs to evolve moving forward, seeing Brendan Sullivan for the first time, and where things need to be heading in to Floyd week.

Today we discuss what the team psychology is coming off of a tough rivalry loss, and how the strength staff should properly manage that. What is the language directive to the team, how you manage the ego hit to the culture of the program when the result didn't reflect what you had hoped, and more. We also talk how losses not only hurt mentally, but hurt more physically too, and we go over conditioning from inside the weekends game and how that data would get translated to the following weeks, some tweaks that worked back towards summer conditioning program, and what linemen should do off the field to be their best on the field.
