Washed Up Walkons

Football Conversation starts at 19:30

Big episode as we draw ever so close to the start of College football season. Today after a short introductory conversation we dive into 2 main topics for the episode. The first, Where would the Iowa Football coaching job rank amongst the rest of the country? Top 15? Top 25? and we discuss the 247Sports list of the Top 16 jobs across the nation. We then move on to the Iowa Football schedule for 2023, and we give our thoughts game by game on the potential outcomes for this season. We go over a few of the betting lines out right now such as odds to win the West, the B1G Championship, and likelihood of winning more than 8.5 games. We also polled our private discord to gather their predictions for the season as well.

Realignment talk and football talk start around the 27:00 mark, before that is just the standard BS banter from us.

We open the episode thinking Kevin wouldn't be joining us, and then later he shows up by surprise. We discuss some fun message board trash talking about our show, getting demolished on social about the wearing jerseys opinion, and all other instances in which people come at the Walkons. We discuss the upcoming LIVE Walkon show from Backpocket Brewery that is set to happen on Friday the 1st of September. We get around to talking football and conference realignment, what started the crazy mess, where the conferences could settle when its all over, and if there is actually any positives to it all? We also create our own Big Ten in a hypothetical where we get to choose 18 teams for the conference.

Mark transferred in to Iowa as a Walkon FB from Air Force. Went on to become a pivotal feature of the Iowa run game in 2012, 2013, and 2014. He is, from the inside perspective, one of the most respected teammates we ever had, and one of the best overall 'Hawkeyes' there has ever been. He entered the Strength and Conditioning world after football ended, and has since found his way to director of performance inside the Chicago Cubs organization. We go in depth on the differences between sports when it comes to training, the nuance of the minor league baseball system, what they focus on off the field, what his day to day looks like, what his own personal exercise has evolved into and much more.

On todays episode we open the discussion with a wild story out of Clemson as a player was secretly recording his teammate. We discuss a couple Hawkeye storylines like the release of Jack Campbell's combine interviews with Detroit, the announcement of Monte Pottebaum's retirement, and Riley Moss being sidelined with an injury. Then we get to the meat and potatoes of the episode where we discuss the development of charges being brought on multiple In State athletes for sports gambling.

Why Chad Greenway was so special next to him at LB, what sparked his coaching career, His path back to IC, his Mt Rushmore of Linebackers at Iowa, what he's excited about with the current TE room, and a bunch of talk that makes you feel like you are in the meeting room with the team!

Iowa Football Media Days/Depth Chart talk starts at 42:25

Fat episode on deck as the guys get together after 10 days since our last recording. Jim Leonhard got hired by the Illini, and we speculate on what seems like a lateral move at best.. We discuss some updated comments on the northwestern situation. We talk about the story breaking out of Minneapolis around the Minnesota Football team and PJ Fleck. That opens the bigger conversation about how close any College sports program always is to a 'scandal' story of discrimination or unfair treatment, and why social media is too powerful when it comes to giving some kids voices. We eventually get around to the B1G Media Days in Indy where Coop, Higgins, and Lachey represented the Hawks along with Coach Ferentz. We ponder over some of the things they said there, and take a look at the 1st Depth Chart of the year for the Hawkeyes. We break down what each position looks like heading in to Fall Camp, and much more.

Dorian is quite possibly the most interesting guest we have ever had on our show. Drake met Dorian in Nashville while training MMA and immediately knew he needed to be a Walkon guest. He got into MMA at an early age of 18 after playing basketball growing up, and tells a wild story about how when an opportunity to go to Thailand presented itself, he never looked back, and didn't really have a choice. He would end up coming back to the US after 7 months but then spent an entire decade back in Thailand from 2009 to 2020. He talks about the crazy training hours and sessions they would put in at the Thai camps, his living conditions, the culture of fighting over there, and a whole lot more. Every word that came out of Dorian's mouth was captivating, a true gem to have on the show.

Bailey is from Davenport, IA and attended Davenport North High School. Joined the Iowa Volleyball program as a fellow WALKON in the spring of 2020 after graduating High School early. We discuss the weird ins and outs of joining the team right in the beginning of a pandemic. After a couple years in Iowa City she entered the portal amongst some uncertainty in the program but when 2nd year Coach Rick Barnes was hired he put Bailey on scholarship to lock her down for the Hawkeyes. We discuss the brutality of the Big Ten Volleyball schedule, managing that as a student athlete, her thoughts on this years upcoming team, as well as her personal endeavors which have taken her all over the country to participate in NIL summits, Sports Rec Major opportunities, and soon Big Ten Media Days.
