TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE
We headed back to meet Siobhan Mckenna, founder of ReJean Denim to hear about her collaboration with Christopher McEvoy, award-winning couture weaver. Our setting for our podcast was at Christopher's Mill in Glasgow.
STUDIO FLOOR aims to inspire fellow fashion designers to find ways to keep unwanted clothing out of landfill, helping to tackle the UK fashion industry's 350,000 tonnes a year textile waste problem
Using woven and textile concepts to repurpose and breathe new life into the cast-offs from both studios, STUDIO FLOOR will showcase a unique 20-piece collection of new garments and accessories to the public.
The exhibition will be open to the public in The Pyramid at Anderston, from Saturday 15 April to Saturday 29 April 2023, coinciding with Fashion Revolution Week.
Project funded by Creative Scotland.

We travelled to meet Jack Coe in his workshop in Aviemore, Scotland. His small business is Timber + Stitch, which he co-owns with his wife, Colleen. Jack started Advantures before #vanlife took social media by storm, building and renting camper vans, later selling the rental side to focus solely on build-to-sell campers. He is one of the original van builders in the UK and has likely forgotten more than most have learnt in building vans, with great vision for bringing colleens work (screen printing) into the studio too. We can't wait to see what timber and stitch evolve into.

We travelled to meet Rebecca and Craig of Struthers Watches in their workshop in Leek, England.
We featured their story in Edition Two of our biannual publication; We Are Makers. It was great to catch up two years later to finally meet and have a more in-depth conversation about them and their journey.
Recently Rebecca has written her own book. Written by Rebecca Struthers and illustrated by Craig, you can order her first book 'Hands of Time', A Watchmaker's History of Time. Hands of Time is an intricate and uniquely personal exploration of the history, science, philosophy, and craft of timekeeping.
"When we were at uni, which is where we originally met, the two of us brought down the average age of the watchmaking course by about 40 years. One of the other students joked that time becomes more interesting the less of it that you have. It was like a retirement hobby as opposed to a career. But the watch industry has been growing massively in recent years. One school in Manchester started to teach basic manufacturing about 15 years ago, and we’re now seeing graduates from that course setting up their own workshops after an initial spell in industry. The industry is getting younger and it’s really promising to see." - Extract from Ed.2

We travelled to meet Geordie Hunter who is owner and maker at Maverick Piping in Glasgow, Scotland.
Geordie handcrafts beautiful practice chanters from scratch using the finest European hard words.
“No attention to detail is missed when turning these true works of art. From the glass-like finish to the polished bores each and every chanter is meticulously checked to ensure that only the highest quality products bear the Maverick name.
Not only do they look great but Maverick chanters are the only practice chanter on the market today that do not require tuning. Our chanters are in tune straight out of the box, with good quality chanter reeds. No tape, no hassle – just pick one up and play.“
Thanks to Geordie for hosting us in his workshop for the afternoon!

We flew to Montegenvere, France to meet Andy Carr of Spoon Customs. This is the place it all started for him.
"I ran away to France, initially thinking I’d just go for a couple of months and get some head space. But once I got there, I started driving a transfer bus for a friend’s company, and I would pass all these landmarks from some of the world’s top pro-cycling events. I had found myself pretty much by accident in the best cycling area in the world, just above a town called Montgenèvre. The Tour de France has started and finished a stage there, and the Giro came through my village. And if you roll down that mountain, you’re then on a road that stretches all the way to Venice, and everybody who’s anybody in bike manufacturing is along that road. It was great to be near all those craftspeople making the kind of bikes I wanted to build. So I just got my head down and got to work."

We visited Siobhan Mckenna at her studio in Rogart Street Campus in Glasgow, UK.
"Each ReJean piece is completely one of kind, hand crafted using discarded denim which we deconstruct and reimagine into something new. Our sustainable denim jackets, inspired by traditional workwear, are designed to be unique, ethical wardrobe staples for all, because style has no gender or size limit.
Shopping at ReJean keeps unwanted clothing out of landfill, helping tackle the UK fashion industry's 350,000 tonnes a year textile waste problem. Repair is also vital part of our DNA, because we believe that loved clothes last."

We took at trip over to Knock which is located in the county of Banffshire, UK to meet Gordon Bruce at Knockdhu Distillery, home of anCnoc Whisky.
"We make whisky. I manage a very small, very traditional distillery in North East Scotland. The emphasis is very much on having people take care of production rather than rely on technology and computers and modern-fangled things like that. The 21st century is overrated, grossly overrated.
The distillery operates 24/7, with basically zero automation. We can only do that because of the guys we have here – it’s a team of five now. The guys will spend the whole shift on their feet, they’re continually moving. It’s very much a hands-on process."

We took at trip over to Belgium to meet Bart Deseyn at his home and to see his workshop and work.
“I first built a kayak about 15 years ago. I have a young son, Emiel – well, he’s not so young anymore – but he wanted to go kayaking with me when he was young. We started out on little lakes and canals and when he was aged six or seven, he said that he wanted to go with me on the trips I do. I thought it was perhaps not that safe for him to be in his own kayak, so we built a very rudimentary canoe back then. And then we built another canoe for a friend, and it just grew and grew.”
