  • #161 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: WE CAN DO SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE

    Send us Fan Mail

The United Nations recently issued a new stamp honoring Mother Teresa with the quote from her, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”  Please join me in this discussion of how small impacts we make can collectively add up to big changes in the world.  And please tell me how small things you've done are creating impacts that can collectively lead to a better world.

  • #160 - WE ARE ADRIAN MACDONALD, ROOKIE WINNER OF THE LEADVILLE TRAIL 100

    Send us Fan Mail

I’m excited to welcome Adrian Macdonald to the Hive.  The leaves are now turning in Leadville, but a few weeks ago, Adrian won the Leadville Trail 100.  Some of you might be legitimately asking, “Who is Adrian Macdonald?”  At Winfield, 50 miles into the race, he was dueling for the lead with Hoka athlete Tyler Andrews, who appeared on WASP episode #129 in May, and Tyler said to me, “Who is this guy?  He’s tough.”  Adrian wasn’t yet a household name in Leadville, in fact, he’d never run a 100-mile race before.  In the race preview articles, he didn’t garner the attention of names like Anton Krupicka, making his return to ultramarathoning after a long hiatus, or multiple time Leadville winner Ian Sharman.  Adrian was lumped into the paragraph of “dark horse contenders.”  Although he wasn’t without credentials, having placed second in last year’s Austin Rattler 66K and winning the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 50-miler in March in a very respectable time.  Adrian ran a bold race at Leadville, especially for a rookie, and crossed the finish line in 16:18, only just more than a half-hour off of Matt Carpenter’s legendary course record, and with a 41-minute cushion ahead of runner-up Matt Flaherty, and 49 minutes over Krupicka.  Adrian tells the story here that I hope you’ll enjoy about his impressive Leadville win.  For a complete and entertaining rundown of the race, be sure to check out last week’s episode with Cole Chlouber, and also listen next week for our episode with 23-year old women’s winner, Annie Hughes.  Also be sure to catch my recap earlier this week on the power play of the American Heroes Run.

  • #159 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: AN INSPIRATIONAL AMERICAN HEROES RUN RECAP

    Send us Fan Mail

It was truly an honor to host the American Heroes Run.  I was awed by all of the runners and other supporters who came out to honor first responders, our military veterans and servicepeople, the lives lost on 9/11/01, and David Clark, and also endured brutal heat during the races.  I am so inspired by many of the stories of those who ran, as I hope you are as well.  Even if you didn't participate, you will be amazed and inspired listening to the stories of those who did.

  • #158 - WE ARE COLE CHLOUBER RECAPPING AN AWESOME LEADVILLE RACE SERIES 2021

    Send us Fan Mail

It’s always a can’t-miss episode when you have Cole Chlouber in the Hive, and I always appreciate Cole making time for me.  Cole and I recount the recent Leadville Trail 100, including his own race on his bike, as well as the entire race series, what the Leadville series has coming up yet this year and beyond.  You’ll hear an update on Ken and Merilee.  And Cole will also get you fired up in Ken-like fashion to Dig Deep and keep discovering that you are better than you think you are and that you can do more than you think you can.  BTW – upcoming episodes will have my recent chats with 100-mile run winners Adrian McDonald and Annie Hughes.  But right now I hope you enjoy this fun and lively chat with the face of the Leadville Race Series.

  • #157 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: I'VE NEVER FINISHED A RUN AND SAID, "I WISH I HADN'T DONE THAT."

    Send us Fan Mail

I have never, ever completed a run, no matter how difficult it was to get out the door, and said afterward, "I wish I hadn't done that."  I guarantee that.  No matter how I felt, how bad the weather was, etc., I have always been glad afterward that I got in that run.  As I explain, there is always a value - or several of them - to every run I've completed, and usually you don't have to look very far to find it.

  • #156 - WE ARE RICH GREENE SHOWING YOU HOW TO NOT QUIT ON YOUR GOALS

    Send us Fan Mail

Today I’m bringing into the Hive Rich Greene, someone who went through his own personal transformation when he got the news from his doctor that his unhealthy lifestyle, which included smoking 2½ packs of cigarettes a day, was getting him perilously close to having a major stroke.  That was his wakeup moment to clean out his fridge and replace his food with healthier options.  He also returned to the pool, where he hadn’t been since his teen days, and began the process of transforming his body into that of an athlete.  His coach persuaded him, much to Rich’s astonishment, to begin biking, and then running.  All of this led him to begin training for the triathlon and eventually completing seven Ironman triathlons.  By the way, he began that part of his journey when he was 51 years old, demonstrating that it’s never too late.  Rich had also spent several decades in the dog-eat-dog world of sales, where he gained many unique insights into what it takes to succeed in that world.  His desire to transfer this knowledge to others spawned his coaching business, where he advises business executives, small business owners, aspiring authors, and anyone looking to make a bold change.  Rich shares a lot of great personal-action ideas here that you can apply to help move you forward to achieve your goals and increase your level of satisfaction and happiness in your life.  In Rich’s business, he provides one-on-one coaching and what is really cool, he is generously offering WASP listeners on his Ironcode Success Web site several no-charge, no-obligation personal success tools that he has developed.  The link to those tools is below.  Seriously, don’t miss out on these, they are very likely to spur you to think differently about how you are going to achieve whatever goals you have been pursuing but haven’t quite achieved.

  • #154 - WE ARE SIMONE BRICK RUNNING THE SALOMON GOLDEN TRAIL SERIES AND EARNING A TRIP TO QUARANTINE

    Send us Fan Mail

I thought it would be fun hearing from Simone about her adventures this summer running the Salomon Golden Trail series in Europe, as well as the travails of spending two weeks quarantined upon her return with no human contact in a small hotel room in Melbourne - at her own $3000 expense!

Simone appeared with David back in episode #93 in September, 2019 she has a quite remarkable story.  Once a depressed, traumatized, overweight teen, Simone set a deadline for herself to either change or commit suicide!  In the meantime, she spent long stretches institutionalized while battling mental health issues.  The woman she is today is nearly unrecognizable from that.  She has won both the Australian and New Zealand mountain running championships, and is a bundle of energy with endless optimism.  Definitely listen to that episode with David if you have not already, or listen to it again.  It’s quite jaw-dropping.  Simone chatted again with David and me in episode #104 in April, 2020, and with me in episode #136 in May, 2021.  I always love chatting with Simone.  I hope her energy will fire up your own training and daily lives.

  • #152 - WE ARE GARY STOTLER REIGNITING THE FLAME AT THE LT100 MTB

    Send us Fan Mail

Gary had gotten lost in the wilderness, so to speak, following his last Leadville Trail 100 run finish, not having the passion to followup with further ultramarathons.  But getting on a mountain bike and completing the Leadville Stage Race, and then winning a coin for the actual 100-mile mountain bike trail race set the stage for him to Dig Deeper, as they say in Leadville, and find satisfaction in pushing through and earning a finisher's belt buckle.  It's a great story with lots of useable life lessons, so please enjoy this conversation.
