  • #151 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: DAVID CLARK FINDS "THE SWITCH"

    Send us Fan Mail

David often talked with me about rising from the ashes while running ultramarathons.  He called this The Switch.  I read from his book Broken Open about his finding The Switch while running the Leadville Trail 100 where he was perilously-close to getting cutoff at mile 60 to making a miraculous turnaround and finishing.  An inspiring and worthwhile lesson for us all in every aspect of our lives.

  • #150 - WE ARE COLIN LYONS OPTIMIZING MENTAL PERFORMANCE

    Send us Fan Mail

I had actually been trying to get Colin Lyons on for some time to talk about athlete’s mental performance training, so it’s fortuitous to get him right at the time that they’re calling these the Mental Health Olympics following Simone Biles’ well-documented travails with the so-called twisties.  Colin was a middling high school and collegiate runner but has found his niche in helping athletes develop their mental focus, find personal excellence, and  achieve their goals.  He breaks it down to TAPE, an acronym for the four controllables: trust, attitude, preparation, and effort. Colin is also a high school track and cross country coach at Castle View High School in Castle Rock, CO.  You will find this conversation interesting and useful whether or not you are an athlete trying to elevate your game on the race course, the court or fields, or in the office.

Athletes' mental health has been in the news a lot lately following the competition withdrawals of world number one-ranked tennis player Naomi Osaka and gymnastics GOAT Simone Biles.  Old friend of the WASP Gary Stotler and I discuss the issues and, most importantly, ways to help.

  • #148 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: HOW TO BUILD MILEAGE AND INCREASE YOUR LONG RUNS

    Send us Fan Mail

Impressive running improvements can come from building mileage.  What are the reasons and the best ways to do so?  A staple of runners seeking to get better and extend their limits is long runs.  Here is my advice for doing these as well as how to get these long enough to meet your goals.

  • #147 - WE ARE MANDY PODLESNY DOING MORE DOING THE DAMN KETO THING

    Send us Fan Mail

I had a great chat with Mandy Podlesny, who is a keto coach.  Mandy suffered a freakish knee injury that sent her life spiraling downward for more than a decade.  She had surgeries, tried all sorts of meds, went through the whole frustrating healthcare system mill that some of us have become all too familiar with.  And none of it worked.  Been there, done that, too.  She was miserable and found herself entering some dark places in her head, too.  She felt like shit, looked like shit.  Until one day she got a wakeup call of sorts from her father of all people, and she finally resolved to take control and find the way to get better and she found out about ketones.  The results were almost immediate and rather astounding.  She focused on eating meat, vegetables, and healthy fats.  Her inflammation drastically diminished and her energy skyrocketed, leading to a complete turnaround in her outlook on life.  You’ll hear her infectious enthusiasm and ebullience in our chat.  Mandy has made sharing her journey her life’s mission so as many others as possible can enjoy the same benefits she does.  It was very interesting, I learned a lot in our really fun chat.  For those of you who are whole-food, plant-based and/or endurance athletes, I also asked her how to fit keto into your worlds.  And you’ll hear she’s not pushing this on anyone or imposing dauntingly strict standards on anyone who wants to experience similar transformations.  She’s all about being, as David Clark always strove to be, a Happiness Warrior.

Consistency is the key to success whether it is sports, overcoming addiction or alcoholism, improving your eating habits, or your quest for self-improvement.  You can plan consistency into your schedule to set yourself up for success, and avoid counterproductive "cheat days" and any other excuses to take you off-track to achieving your goals.

  • #145 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: THE AMERICAN HEROES RUN CHALLENGE

    Send us Fan Mail

On the heels of a great sports weekend, I have a challenge for some of you.  We are approximately two months away from the American Heroes Run, races that were begun 12 years ago by David, which I took over directing last year in Longmont CO, just east of Boulder.  We had a great turnout despite Covid, and we’re expecting an even more awesome event this year.  David began the American Heroes Run to honor first responders, military servicepeople and veterans, and those lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.  The splendid motto of the races is “Patriotism without Politics,” something I think we can all embrace.  In true David fashion, there are 9/11 tie-ins with the race distances as well as the start times.  For instance, the half-marathon begins at the time the first tower of the World Trade Center was struck, the 9.11-mile run begins when the second tower was struck, and the 5K begins when one of the hijacked planes plowed into the Pentagon.  Distances include 5K, 9.11-mile, half-marathon, marathon, 9 hour and 11 minutes, 24 hours, and 100 miles.  There is also a virtual option.  Sign-up for any race and get a race shirt, finisher award, and certificate.  You can register for any distance at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175

So here’s the challenge.  Let’s get your summer running goals in gear!  I’m looking for 10 runners to do the American Heroes Run Challenge.  There will be two categories.  The first is Couch to American Heroes Run.  You can be starting from ground zero up to being capable of completing a 5K run.  Our goal will be to get you to complete the 9.11-mile run or half-marathon, either in-person or virtually.  The second category is Couch to Marathon or more.  Not literally from the couch, but getting you to ramp up to completing either the AHR marathon, 24-hour, or 100-miles.  Since we’re starting this right after Independence Day, the cost is only $76 per month.  You’ll receive personal coaching from me, 50% off any of the AHR races, which is worth anywhere from $25 to $87.50, and a copy of your choice of one David Clark book, either Out There, Broken Open, or Eat Shit and Die.  A great value for sure.  But I will take only 10 runners, so reach out to me ASAP to join the challenge.

  • #144 - WE ARE ALICIA SHEARER RUNNING WITH THE BURROS

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode we are going to explore Colorado’s own unique endurance sport, pack burro racing.  I had a great visit with Alicia Shearer on her ranch spread in Lafayette, Colorado, just east of Boulder, where she has her burros, horses, ponies, chickens, and more, some of whom you’ll hear as we recorded.  I had a chance to walk with Alicia and her burros Pepper and Nestor, who are incredibly sweet and intelligent animals.  In races, each burro must carry a miner’s pick, pan, and shovel, a nod to the mining heritage behind this decades-old Colorado tradition.  There is a series of races here, including a Triple Crown in Leadville, Fairplay, and Buena Vista.  There are now burro races in other states as well.  Distances vary I believe from roughly 10K to 15 miles, typically on pretty rugged mountain terrain.  Handlers do not ride, but they must run alongside tethered to their burro.  The races are really a lot of fun to watch.  I won’t go into a lot more detail because Alicia does a great job of explaining the sport, training for it, where the burros come from, and the vital burro conservation programs run by the Bureau of Land Management.  I’m sure this is new to a lot of you and you’ll be entertained, and maybe even want to try it yourself.  I would definitely recommend checking out the Web site of the Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation, yes, that’s what it’s called, which of course is filled with ass puns, but it has a tremendous amount of interesting facts about the sport.

  • #143 - WE ARE SUPERMAN POWER PLAY: LOU GEHRIG'S 'LUCKIEST MAN ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH' SPEECH

    Send us Fan Mail

On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig, despite having just been diagnosed with ALS, often called Lou Gehrig's Disease, gave one of the most inspiring speeches in sports or almost anywhere else.  The 'Iron Horse' had played in 2130 consecutive games, and led the New York Yankees to six World Series championships, but would die of this terrible disease in less than two years.  However, the Hall of Famer would give a farewell speech that showed amazing gratitude and humility, calling himself, "The luckiest man on the face of the Earth."  I hope you enjoy hearing this inspiring speech.

    Send us Fan Mail

I have witnessed an incredible number of amazing athletic feats in the past week alone.  The eight-hole sudden death playoff in the PGA Traveler's event; Jim Walmsley leading the way in the blistering hot Western States 100 that saw an amazing number of Golden Hour finishers; the U.S. Olympic track and field trials that has seen a large contingent of Colorado-connected qualifiers; the 10 Warriors in Leadville last weekend; and the record-shattering and inspiring individuals and teams I watched this weekend at the Colorado State High School track championships.  How you can use these amazing performances to inspire your day, week, and more!
