This is what I feel is a really great Monday power play episode to rally you to have a terrific start to your week. Once again, I’m having a conversation with friend of the WASP, Gary Stotler, motivational coach and speaker, and author of the book “Success is Spelled Action.” Today we talk about perfection and imperfection, and how to prevent these feelings from getting you to commit to use just 1% of your day to move yourself forward toward whatever goals you have. Enjoy!

This is the first of what we will be calling power plays. We will still be having the long-form conversations as before, but these power plays will be short topics, slap shots to keep the hockey imagery going, to help energize the start of your week. For the first few, I’ll be having conversations with an old friend who’s been on the WASP before, Gary Stotler, motivational coach and speaker, and author of the book “Success is Spelled Action.” Today we talk about grace, an important topic in this time when it’s important that we be nicer and more forgiving to one another. Enjoy!

Dakota Jones made his debut as a teenager, and he wasn’t just a feel-good finisher, he was winning races. He has competed and won, or finished on the podium, in races as diverse as the Hardrock 100 in Silverton, CO, the Lake Sonoma 50 in California, and the Transvulcania Ultramarathon in the Canary Islands. He began directing his own race, the Telluride Mountain Run, at age 22. He is now at the forefront of promoting Protect Our Winters, in which many notable athletes are using political activism to help attack the threat of man-made climate change. Putting actions behind his words, in 2018 Dakota rode his bike 250 miles from Durango to Colorado Springs and then won the Pikes Peak Marathon, before loading up his bike again and riding back to Durango. He has even resumed his schooling so he can better speak to the critical issues of climate change with the goal of earning a mechanical engineering degree at Montana State University in Bozeman. I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation with this fascinating young star of trail running.

Inspirational speaker Marc Mero is in the hive having an energetic talk with Bill about positivity and a lot more. Marc is a former WWE world wrestling champion and amateur boxer who for the past 15 years has toured the world presenting before packed auditoriums speaking in a deeply personal and emotional way about his message of dreaming big, forming better relationships, and living a life filled with passion and purpose. In 2007, Marc founded the nonprofit organization Champion of Choices, empowering youth to make positive choices, and after thinking he was done traveling hundreds of days a year, he has now spoken to more than a million people in the ensuing years from schools to Fortune 500 companies, made TV appearances galore, and written a book entitled, “How to be the Happiest Person on the Planet.”

Jason Romero won the 100-mile race in the American Heroes Run in Longmont, Colorado this past September in roughly 20½ hours. Oh yes, and Jason is severely sight-impaired. This was actually one of Jason’s lesser achievements. Years ago, Jason found himself divorced, unemployed, and in a deep depression with a degenerative eye condition that has left him with limited light perception. Feeling a calling out of the blue to run across America, he dedicated the next two years of his life to prepare for, and ultimately run, more than 3,000 miles from California to New York in less than 60 days, averaging 51.5 miles per day, to log the 7th fastest transcontinental foot crossing ever. It was, and remains the only transcontinental foot-crossing by a blind person. He wrote about the run and his other struggles in his book, Running into the Dark. For more on his story, Jason was also on the WASP episode #61 with David.
Jason and I talk about struggling with adversity, learning to not give up or give in, to accept one's self for all that one is, and is not. Jason has a new book coming out, the Success Cycle, and he’s started a non-profit business called Inspire Connection, which provides motivational speaking opportunities.
OK, we’re getting down to it. I’m already working on the project to write what I’m calling David’s fourth book. Some of you have told me you thought you might have missed the submission deadline, but that’s not true. Yet. How about jotting down your David Clark story and getting it to me by mid-March? If you’re unsure about length, shoot for 200 to 500 words. Don’t worry about exact length, you’ll probably get into the flow and write more before you know it. My contact info is in the show notes, [email protected], I’m on FB, and on IG as @stahlor. I can also do a phone interview with you if you prefer.

Cole Chlouber truly grew up with the Leadville Race Series, so the race series couldn’t be in better hands as it heads into the 2021 races and beyond. Cole and I have a spirited chat about the Leadville Trail 100 past and pandemic present, including the years of the Tarahumaras, David’s integral connection to the series, our own race experiences, the City of Leadville itself, co-founders Ken and Merilee, and a lot more. We actually recorded this on Feb. 5, David’s 50th birthday, so it was especially poignant. If you love Leadville, or plan to become part of the Leadville family, which is what every participant becomes, or are just curious about what draws people to this magical place at two miles high in the Colorado Rockies, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy this episode.

Hannah Halvorsen, a 22-year old from Truckee, CA, had just earned her way onto the World Cup skiing circuit when she was hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk in downtown Anchorage in November, 2019. She suffered serious injuries, including a broken tibia, her MCL and PCL were torn away from the bone, plus skull fractures and severe brain injuries that caused a temporary loss of vision, taste, and smell. After surgeries and a long, arduous rehab process, Hannah has incredibly already returned to the World Cup circuit, and in a race this December in Dresden, Germany scored her first-ever World Cup points.
What struck me about Hannah is her attitude. For one thing, she literally has a broad smile in every photo, whether she was digging deep doing rehab exercises or at the end of a race where most of us are looking like we are about to die. You’ll hear more about how this young woman feels gratitude with every step she has taken. She has also been an outspoken advocate in addressing body image issues that many people feel, not just limited to skiers who paradoxically have to build tremendous strength to succeed in their sport, yet wear skintight kits. I think you’ll enjoy this conversation I had with this remarkable rising US skier.

This inspirational episode is a very special simulcast with Ian Lawton's Workshed Podcast in Ireland! Ian went through profound sadness following the passing of his 1 day old son Hank in 2011, which led to him exceeding 350 pounds. Ian eventually found a support group, dropped to around 200 pounds, and began running, eventually completing ultramarathon distances. Beginning on January 23, Ian will run 10 marathons in 10 days to honor Hank on what would have been his 10th birthday. Plus, due to Ireland being in a Level 5 lockdown, he will complete these runs on a 400-meter track! He's raising funds for bereaved fathers, so if you can help, there are links below to direct you to where to donate.
