James Shaw has confirmed he will contest the Green Party's co-leadership after being ousted from the role.

"I am in it to win it," Shaw told reporters saying he had spoken to party members and family and had decided to stand again as Green Party co-leader.

Shaw made the announcement after failing to get the 75 per cent votes of delegates at the party's online annual meeting at the weekend to be reconfirmed in the role. Co-leader Marama Davidson was reconfirmed by delegates.

This opens up the co-leadership role this week to challengers.

Wellington mayoral candidate Paul Eagle is promising to run the ruler over council spending, a new City Development Authority, and a world class arts precinct.

The Labour MP for Rongotai is taking leave and donating his salary to charity while he campaigns for the city's top job.

Eagle has formally launched his campaign after confirming his bid a month ago.

He's vowing to run a ruler over council spending and reprioritise money, where possible, to turn the focus back to the likes of parks, pools, pipes, and potholes.

Act says a "bonkers" billion-dollar Government plan will drastically reduce the capacity of Wellington's existing Mt Victoria tunnel for just 6,000 walkers and cyclists.
The preferred option for the Let's Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) transport plan includes a second Mt Victoria tunnel with two lanes for private vehicles and two lanes for public transport. The existing tunnel will be converted into one for walking and cycling.
Written parliamentary questions by the Act Party show it's estimated about 3000 bike trips will be made through the converted tunnel per day, provided there is a connected cycle network in the central city.
It's thought between 2400 and 3600 pedestrians will also use it on a daily basis.
This is compared to up to 55,000 motorists who currently use the tunnel every day.
Act transport spokesman Simon Court criticised the Government's preferred option for providing no additional capacity for vehicles.
