  • What a Creep: Jerry Lewis (Comedy Creep) & Our Non Creep Hal Sparks!
    What a Creep
    Season 14, Episode 9
    Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lewis was a comedian, actor, and director whose goofy comic style made him one of the most popular performers of the 1950s and ’60s. You might also know him as the guy that hosted the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon that ran from 1966 until 2014.

But he was also difficult, cruel, and an insecure egomaniac who couldn’t keep it in his pants. He was a sexist creep who sexually harassed and assaulted many of his female co-stars.

  • What a Creep: "The Zoot Suit Riots" & "The Sleepy Lagoon Murder"
What a Creep: The Sleepy Lagoon Murder
    Season 14, Episode 8
The Murder of Jose Gallardo Diaz & the Zoot Suit Riots

On August 2, 1942, Jose Gallardo Diaz (22) was found unconscious in an area known as The Sleepy Lagoon. He had multiple head injuries, was stabbed at least twice, and had a broken finger. He died at Los Angeles Hospital, and a complete sweep of Mexican Americans by the LA cops captured the media's imagination. Though mostly from future Creep William Randolph Hearst) kids that were Zoot-suiters were seen as a dangerous element and causing a crime wave. The phrase De-Zoot the suit was often sed.
Diaz's murder remains unsolved, but it was the catalyst for the "Zoot Suit Riots" that happened the following summer. If you have heard of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies song—you will get no idea how horrible this incident indeed was for the Chicano and African American community.
This episode will talk about the Sleepy Lagoon Murders, the sham of a trial that happened afterward, and the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles of 1943.
Trigger Warnings: Racism and my terrible attempts at Spanish.

  • What a Creep: Mark Hofmann (Salt Lake City Bomber & Killer)
    What a Creep: Mark Hofmann
    Season 14, Episode 5
    Forgery/Liar/Killer/Bomber
Mark Hofmann had a Netflix documentary series that highlighted his criminal activity in the '70s & 80s in Salt Lake City, Utah—the home of the Mormon Church (known as the LDS the Church of Jesus Christ Later Day Saints.) In Murder Among Mormons, you learned about his crime spree on Tuesday, October 15, 1985, which involved two people being killed by homemade bombs he created and left for them. But what motivated this, by all accounts, a good Mormon who seemed like the perfect family man?
In this episode, I will go into Mark's background as a world-class forger and liar who ran himself and others into so much debt—he felt that setting off bombs would buy him time to figure out his financial problems. And the fallout in the church and community since then.

  • What a Creep: Norman Mailer (Controversial Writer & Creep)
What a Creep: Norman Mailer Season 14, Episode 3 Writer, Activist, & Wife-Stabber Norman Mailer has been in the news lately due to the fact his son John Buffalo Mailer who is partnering with Mailer biographer J. Michael Lennon on a new trove of Mailer writings with the later writers’ ideas on what American democracy will look like in the future. The man died in 2007 at the age of 84 and lived as big a life as any (we will get into it all today.)  Yet, Mailer’s longtime publisher Random House said they will not be associated with this work, instead, Skyhorse publishing (which worked with Woody Allen last year) decided to take on this new work.  Why is Mailer potentially considered “canceled” so long after his death and living a life out loud with his machismo & boorishness?  Today we will talk about Norman Mailer and why he is one of the most controversial (and creepy) writers & creators of the 20th century.  Trigger warning: Domestic Violence & homophobia Sources: Norman Mailer Wikipedia Norman Mailer: The American Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, and Janet Flanner on Dick Cavett Show (1971) Town Bloody Hall (1979) New York Times Britannica New York Times Obituary New York Magazine The Airship Be sure to follow us on social media. • What a Creep: Canada's Residential Schools (Non-Creeps: Dan Levy & Eugene Levy)
What a Creep: Canada’s Residential Schools Season 14, Episode 1 The systematic cultural genocide of indigenous people of North America  From 1831 – 1998 North America put seven generations of indigenous people (primarily children) into residential schools to take the culture of First Nation and turn it into a Christian/European society. The Catholic Church was often involved, but the Canadian Government ran some. Over 150,000 children were forcibly taken from their families and sent to overcrowded schools that cut their hair off, changed their names, made them convert to Christianity, exposed them to violence. They were forbidden from speaking in their native language, and died were not reported to authorities. (It's estimated about 25% died from everything from illness to malnutrition.) Last year in May 2021, more than 1300 unmarked graves were found at four different former residential schools, which caused the nation to finally come to terms with a national stain that has never really been rectified.
