What a Creep: Dov Charney Season 13, Episode 10 Former CEO & Creep of American Apparel Dov Charney is the creator of American Apparel, a retail clothing chain that sold the building blocks for your hipster wardrobe - leggings, plain T-shirts, and pants. But it had really sleazy marketing and a dedication to not make their clothes in a sweatshop which made them kinda cool. Unfortunately, Dov Charney is probably more famous for his sexual harassment than he is for American Apparel. • What a Creep: Robert Durst ("The Jinx" Creep)
What a Creep: Robert Durst  Season 13, Episode 8 The Jinx Creep! (Kathleen & Robert Durst) In 2015, HBO released a docu-series that took the nation by storm. The first media interview with Robert Durst, the son of billionaire real estate magnate Seymour Durst, in decades at the time. The then 72-year-old Durst has been accused of three murders in his life and seemed to use his money and privilege to avoid any real penalty. The filmmaker Andrew Jarecki was obsessed with Durst's story, so his 2010 film All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst was inspired by the story of Durst's first marriage Kathie McCormack who disappeared in 1982 and was declared dead in 1990. Since then, he was accused of murder two more times and seemed to be made of Teflon. He is now serving time for first-degree murder and will soon be on trial for the murder of his first wife. Will he make it long enough to face a jury of his peers again? • What a Creep: Altamont "Creepy Concert Tragedy" Not Fade Away Replay
What a Creep: Not Fade Away Podcast Bonus Ep  “Altamont/The Rolling Stones” The Not Fade Away podcast is back and today’s subject--the Altamont concert that took place on December 6, 1969. It was supposed to be a showcase by the Rolling Stones to demonstrate their ability to draw an even bigger crowd than the Woodstock festival which took place in August of that year. That concert was billed as “three days of peace & music” and managed to rise above their circumstances of overcrowding, rain and brown acid to become a legendary event that 50 years later serves as an example of how hippies can work peacefully with “the man” to create beauty out chaos. Instead, Altamont is rightly or wrongly known as one of the key events that ended 60s idealism. At the end of the day, 300,000 showed up at a tiny speedway far outside the city of San Francisco to find a barely visible stage, pissed-off Hell Angels members as authority figures, horrible drugs snuck into drinks that left people incapacitated, very few bathrooms, little emergency care, and four people dead. Among the deceased was an 18-year Meredith Hunter--an African American teen who was proud to bring his pretty, white teenage girlfriend Patti Bredehoft to the show but thought it would be wise to carry a Smith & Weston pistol for protection.   Hunter was beaten and stabbed to death by a group of Hell’s Angels who claimed he was aiming to shoot at the stage. All of this was shockingly caught on film as filmmakers Albert & David Maysles were shooting a documentary about the shooting a documentary about the Rolling Stones which would be released in 1970 under the title Gimme Shelter. The concert, which was to feature The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Rolling Stones as headliners were meant to rival the east coast Woodstock celebration. It was also a public relations stunt by the Rolling Stones to offer a free concert when their current tour was billing high ticket prices for the time. It would also serve to have the Grateful Dead play to a home crowd and make up for their rather pathetic showing at Woodstock. (The band themselves admit their portion of the three-day celebration was pretty stinky.) This is the story of how that concert came to be, what went wrong, the lives that were lost and what lessons we can learn from the mess of a show that was a mixture of rock star hubris, greed and youthful ignorance. In the first part, I am going to give you an overlay on what happened that day and include an eyewitness account by my friend Andrea who attended (and was eight months pregnant by the way.) The second part will include interviews with two authors who are experts on Altamont: Saul Austerlitz a Brooklyn-based author wrote “Just a Shot Away: Peace, Love and Tragedy With the Rolling Stones at Altamont” with a keen focus on Meredith Hunter and his tragically short life that was marked by chaos, family mental health issues and racism. Joel Selvin, longtime rock journalist from the San Francisco area who wrote “Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day.” Clips used in this episode: Mick Jagger announces a free concert in San Francisco (from the film Gimme Shelter) Attorney Melvin Belli negotiates to get Altamont Speedway (from the film Gimme Shelter) The Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia & Phil Lesh) hear about the chaos at Altamont (from the film Gimme Shelter) Jerry Garcia describing why Altamont had violence versus Woodstock (DVD extra from the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip) Mick Jagger tries to calm the audience down (from the film Gimmie Shelter) Also, subscribe to the show so you won’t miss my next episode!   Be sure to follow us on social media. • What a Creep: Frank Sinatra (replay)
What a Creep: Frank Sinatra (Replay)   Season 13, Episode 7 Crooner N' Creep Francis Albert Sinatra is one of the most celebrated vocalists of the 20th Century. He has sold over 150 million records and continues to sell just as well now as he did at the height of his height popularity.  He was known for his blue eyes and velvet voice. He was one of the first teen heartthrobs, a lover of women, a man who would just as soon get into a fight and then hug a person. He was demanding of everyone around him but outside of music & performing—cut himself a lot of slack.  Frank was a loyal friend unless you pissed him off, a good actor if you didn’t ask for too many takes, a lover who expected fidelity and gave none of it back. He was incredibly progressive for his time but used ethnic slurs without care. Frank ran on all cylinders until he ran out of gas. Then he expected to be treated with kid gloves. He loved his kids but did not spend much time with them. He could be very generous and also hold a grudge for years. He could be elegant and a total brute. Demanding and then pathetic. He was either a manic depressive or bipolar individual who at times could be a complete and total creep. He is complicated, smart, funny, mean, talented, childish, and ultimately a sad, lonely man who was his own worst enemy.  Sources for this episode include: The London Telegraph (Martin Chilton) Wikipedia Daily Mail (excerpt of Barbara Sinatra’s Book) New York Daily News (Sheryl Connelly) Mental Floss (Bill Demain) PBS.org Musicoholics Frank Sinatra: Behind the Legend by J. • What a Creep: Rex Harrison (Old Timey Hollywood Creep!)
What a Creep: Rex Harrison Season 13, Episode 6 “Old-Timey Hollywood Creep” From Henry Higgins to Doctor Doolittle, Rex Harrison is one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men of the 20th Century. With his tall stature, deep booming voice, and his undeniable confidence—audiences ate him up whether he was playing a deceased sea captain in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir or Julius Caesar. “Sexy Rexy” as he was known led a life full of swagger, luxury, success, and often—tragedy. This is one of those old-timey movie star tales where the Creep is an arrogant, mean, stingy son of a bitch who treated co-workers, colleagues, family, and anyone in a position that could be referred to as “staff” like disposable trash. What a Creep: Not Fade Away Podcast Bonus Ep  “The Who in Cincinnatti” The Travis Scott “Astroworld” Concert Tragedy (This episode was originally released in December 2019)  In today’s episode, we talk about the tragedy at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati that took place on December 3, 1979. On that night 11 people were killed trying to enter the doors for a concert by The Who. At the time it was the worst concert tragedy in American history. “Festival Seating” was demonized and the term “stampede” was irresponsibly used to describe it and other incidents over the years. So what actually happened that night? Take a listen to this show! In this episode, I am helped by someone who was key to disseminating information the night of Monday, December 3, 1979, in Cincinnati, Paul Wertheimer, founder, and principal of Crowd Management Strategies. The information he gives us will be invaluable to truly understand what happened and why the same mistakes keep popping up around the world. • What a Creep: Gwen Shamblin Lara ("The Way Down" Cult Creep)
What a Creep: Gwen Shamblin Lara Season 13, Episode 4 The Founder of Remnant Fellowship Church “HBOMax The Way Down”  Gwen Henley Shamblin Lara was the founder of a popular Christina diet program called “The Weigh Down” whose followers were instructed to use God as their guide to lose weight and overcome eating issues. This led her to start her own ministry called the Remnant Fellowship which along with her best-selling books and popular online programs and festivals made her a wealthy woman. For years, she dodged rumors that she ran a cult and took advantage of her followers. On May 29, 2021, she died in a plane crash along with her second husband for Tarzan in Manhattan actor Joe Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah, and several members of her church on their way to a MAGA rally. HBO Max produced three episodes for a series called The Way Down (two more are due next year) which exposed many of the more unsavory aspects of her life. Today we talk about the mysterious leader with the incredible head of hair and what is happening with her ministry today. Trigger Warnings: Church cults, eating disorders, and child abuse.
