Do we keep doing things that improve our lives and make our lives better? Hopefully, the answer is, yes. Now we know that very simple things like water, getting enough sleep, and moving our bodies all help us to feel better in the short term, and in the long term. Today's episode is about how chiropractic fits into that as well.

Dr. Ron Oberstein has served as President of Life Chiropractic College West since 2017. Before that he practiced in San Diego. His wife Dr. Mary is also a chiropractor, as are their 3 daughters. Dr. Oberstein is an active member of the chiropractic community, serving in leadership roles in numerous organizations. He teaches chiropractic technique, philosophy, and principles around the world.

Chiropractors often talk about the 3-legged stool of chiropractic: the science, the art, and the philosophy.

Students obviously need science to pass boards, they need art to be able to actually adjust and they need philosophy to know why they are doing any of it (and the WHY behind their why, as Dr. Oberstein says.) We discuss how students and doctors can maintain that balance.

Have you ever seen a before and after of smoker’s lungs? Maybe when they were smoking and the lungs looked dark, black, they're scarred. And then, after a certain amount of time, without that toxicity, without that stressor, those lungs begin to heal and look very different.

That scenario of innate healing isn't exclusive to just a smoker who stops. It is possible when any stressor is removed from our bodies for it to be able to heal innately. It might just take some patience, and it might not happen in the way, or in the order that we would like it to.

In this episode of What Chiropractic Doesn’t Cure: Stories of Innate, Dr. Ian Shtulman answers an important question, “If mother’s innate intelligence knows what to do in pregnancy, labor and delivery - why do we still have complications?”

We talk about the effects of stress on moms and babies, and how alter biomechanics can lead to nerve irritation and interference. This leads to dysfunction.

Dr. Ian gave an example of a mother who was referred to him at 36-weeks gestation with a breech baby. He explains how specific chiropractic adjustments helped improve the alignment of her pelvis, giving the baby room to maneuver into a head down position.

That in itself would be a great example of how chiropractic supports the body doing what it does best, however, it doesn’t end there. Dr. Ian shares what happened during her delivery and how he also helped her newborn, who had been diagnosed with hip dysplasia.

We also discus why chiropractic research and case studies matters: because these witnessed and recorded stories create more opportunities to serve more people!

Dr. Ian Shtulman is a second-generation chiropractor, in practice in Florida, with a special focus on perinatal and pediatric chiropractic. Studies:

The basic idea behind the chiropractic PCP model was to create an integrative system of health care using PCPs who specialized in non-pharmaceutical and nonsurgical approaches, and to compare patient and provider data with the traditional HMO system. An independent provider association (IPA), known as Alternative Medicine Integration Group (AMI), served as the integrative health care system and operated within the standard HMO model.

Welcome to Episode 33 of What Chiropractic Doesn't Cure: Stories of Innate podcast. This is a special one, because, if you don't know, the human spine has 33 vertebrae. It's also a special number in chiropractic because Stephenson's textbook talks about 33 principles of chiropractic.

For this special 33rd episode. I wanted to have someone who really embodies the science, the art, and the philosophy of chiropractic: Dr. Ryan Dopps.

For a little background before this episode, Dr. Ryan’s wife, Dr. Denise Dopps, died in Sept 2024 following an incredibly inspiring, heartbreaking 5-year battle with Stage IV colon cancer. She was one of my dearest friends and I was honored to have her record Episode 1 of this podcast.

Dr. Ryan shared an amazing talk about Dr. Denise’s life and legacy at Dynamic Essentials barely a month later, giving everyone an incredible charge. (You may be able to get a recording of it at www.lifede.com from the October 2024 meeting.)

I’m so grateful that everything came together for Dr. Ryan to share this conversation. We dig deep into recognizing symptoms as a disruption of life force. We also discuss why chiropractors are talking about topics of the mind and soul, not just focusing on the body.

He quoted the Developer of Chiropractic, B.J. Palmer, “We chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul. We release the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulet of force, that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells, and stirs them into life.”

With everything Dr. Ryan has gone through, I asked if his trust in the body’s innate intelligence has been shaken and where that has taken him, as a person and doctor.

Dr. Ryan gives this great challenge: “Use your experiences, use your life, use your encounters that you've had with people, and the struggles that you've gone through not as a negative, to be a victim in your story, but use it as a catalyst, as a driving force to make the world better right to make humanity a better place because you're in it.”
