U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso, alongside U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman, all Republicans from Wyoming, have introduced legislation opposing the USDA’s final rule mandating electronic identification ear tags for bison and cattle.

The Congressional Review Act resolution aims to overturn the USDA’s rule, which is scheduled to take effect on November 5. This rule mandates that ranchers must equip all livestock over 18 months old with electronic identification ear tags if they are transported across state lines, with exemptions only for animals going directly to slaughter.

The Wyoming lawmakers argue that this rule, which is expected to affect approximately 11 million cattle nationwide, will financially burden cattle producers and invade their privacy.

The USDA defends the rule, stating that electronic identification ear tags are crucial for quickly identifying and responding to costly foreign animal diseases.

The legislation introduced by the Wyoming representatives highlights the ongoing debate between enhancing animal disease tracking and the financial and privacy concerns of cattle producers.
