Investopedia Editor-in-Chief Caleb Silver talks about how the federal government shutdown will now carry into next week, after the Senate tried and failed, again, to pass a bill to fund the government at current levels. The longest shutdown was 34 days, in 2018-2019, in President Trump's first term. Tens of thousands of federal workers aren't getting paid and the Trump Administration wants to fire upwards of ten thousand of them, but a federal judge has blocked that effort for now.

1. It's do or die for the Brewers tonight in Los Angeles. Three games, three runs scored, no wins, that's the story for the Brewers offense which has done next to nothing against Dodgers pitching. The losses have overshadowed some quality pitching performances for the Brewers including the Miz who allowed 1 earned run and stuck out 9 in 5 innings of work. If the series gets back to Milwaukee, Miz will be available, but not tonight...and tonight is all that matters. Coverage of tonight's game begins following the 6:00 news on WTMJ.

2. A federal appeals court is blocking the Trump administration's desire to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago. The court did allow the federal government to keep the troops in federal service, but it explicitly maintained the lower court's order preventing their deployment within Illinois for now. The administration is expected to continue the appeal process.

3. More information about a new alert from the FDA, after reports the agency has expanded its cinnamon recall. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been periodically updating its public health alert since July 2024, after investigations tracing contaminated applesauce pouches revealed the source to be lead-tainted cinnamon.

ABC News Correspondent Jim Ryan talks about how for the first time ever, the average price of a new car or truck exceeds $50,000 according to Kelley Blue Book. Meanwhile, the typical new auto loan rate was around 9% in August, while subprime or “deep-subprime” loans were running as high as 20%. What’s more, about a quarter of people buying new cars were trading in vehicles with negative equity. There are ways to get out from an “underwater” auto loan.

1. The Brewers release Game 3’s starting lineup and starting pitcher Aaron Ashby as the NLCS shifts to Los Angeles for Games 3, 4, and 5, if necessary. In order to force a Game 5, the Brewers need a win tonight or tomorrow. In order to get the series back to Milwaukee, the Brewers need two wins in Los Angeles. The day off was key for a Brewers pitching staff. Milwaukee used 6 pitchers in game one and 6 pitchers in Game 2. The Dodgers, on the other hand, have relied on the bullpen to cover just one inning in two games. Coverage of today's game begins at 4:30 on WTMJ.

2. A new legal fight over the White House moves to fire federal workers on the 16th day of the government shutdown. As for who is being paid and who isn't, the President has authorized measures to pay the troops and members of the FBI, but thousands of workers, including air traffic controllers still going without pay. Nearly 750,000 federal workers have been furloughed and ordered not to report to work.

1. Happening right now in Milwaukee at finance and personnel committee budget hearing, the future of Milwaukee's controversial streetcar is being challenged. The city's financial plan for The Hop in 2025 was projected to cost $5.7 million but only generated about $1.7 million in revenue. Therein lies one of the issues, a $4 million dollar loss. Mayor Cavalier Johnson's 2026 proposed budget continues funding for the streetcar, which continues to operate without charging a fare. Spiker suggests eliminating streetcar funding altogether as an alternative to raising the wheel tax from $30 to $40 annually for city residents.

2. The Brewers take the field tonight at Dodgers Stadium for a 5:08 first pitch for Game 3 of the NLCS. Games 3, 4, and 5, if necessary, will be played in Los Angeles and the Brewers need two wins to bring the series back to Milwaukee. The pitching plan for tonight includes lefty Jose Quintana whose only appearance in the post-season was three scoreless innings in game three of the NLCS against the Cubs. 3. According to a government report, the cost to heat homes with electricity will rise this winter, by about 4%. The report from the Energy Information Administration also points out that natural gas heating is decreasing and those costs are expected to fall by about one percent. Heating oil could be down by as much as eight percent. For every 1% you lower it, you can save about 1% on your bill. Another tip: run your ceiling fan in the opposite direction to circulate warm air throughout the room.
