1. Big business news today: Harley-Davidson just announced its next CEO. The Milwaukee-based company named Artie Starrs as its next leader. That's effective October 1st. This ends a prolonged search for a candidate to succeed Jochen Zeitz. Starrs was most recently the CEO of Topgolf International. Before Topgolf, Starrs was the CEO of Pizza Hut. Harley announced back in April that Zeitz would step down this year. The motorcycle maker has struggled over the last few years, as it tries to revive the motorcycle brand. In a statement, Starrs said he's long admired the unique position Harley-Davidson has in the hearts of its riders and fans. He also said, "There's no brand that brings the same level of "community" and "rebellious spirit" as Harley-Davidson." Starrs also noted he's looking forward to working with the dealer network. That's an important note because many dealers have not felt good about the direction of Harley in recent years.
2. New tariffs are schedule to go into effect Friday and with that price hikes for American consumers. The prices of some everyday goods, including coffee, fruits, vegetables and medicine are all expected to rise. Clothing and shoes expected to go up, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Moody's Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi believes the U.S. economy is currently on the "precipice of a recession." The administration says the tariffs will re-shape global trade, boost American manufacturing long-term and return billions of dollars to the U.S. Treasury.
3. Politicians are polling poorly. Democrats and Republicans are in big trouble in an Associated Press poll where people were asked to share the first word that comes to mind when they think of the Republican and Democratic parties. 4 in 10 were negative, using words like "dishonest” and “stupid”.
