January 23, 2025The Warrior Class – Bulldogs
Mike Cauley has been breeding and hunting with bulldogs his entire life. For more than forty years Mike has been using American Pit Bull Terriers as the clean up crew for his hog hunting adventures.
Chris and Mike discuss the history of bulldogs from the farm, working free range livestock, to the marsh, catching wild hogs. They talk about game bred pits, hunting stock, socialization and training. Mike discusses the prime age to introduce bulldogs to training and hunting, how to handle bulldogs at an early age and throughout its entire life. Finally, Mike gives us a peak into the sentimental value he places on his bulldogs and this is not to be underrated.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is by far the most controversial breed of dog in the history of mankind. Their traditional uses have been outlawed in most countries but their practicality still lives with hunters that need this warrior class canine to catch and anchor dangerous game.
Mike Cauley is an experienced dog man with decades of experience in dog training and hunting.

January 21, 2025Falconry Chronicles Episode 151: Kyna Sturges
For the second week in a row, another milestone has been achieved.... It's now been a year since rebranding and continuing on as Falconry Chronicles! It's been a challenge, but I'm happy that so many people have continued on the journey with me! Your support continues to mean the world, and I don't take it for granted! That being said, we're down to the last couple of episodes that were recorded in Wyoming early last year, and this episode features another good friend, Kyna Sturges. Having gotten to know Kyna and Vahe over the last few years, it's always great to pay them a visit when I'm in Wyoming, and I'm glad I got the chance to discuss things with Kyna in regards to her unique introduction into falconry. She gives insight into what it has been like being relatively new in the sport, while simultaneously being immersed into aspects of hawking and propagation that many falconers don't get to experience in their lives. Thanks again for a memorable year, and enjoy!

January 20, 2025Bayou Hogs and Nordic Bears with Mike Cauley
In this episode of the Houndsman XP podcast, the boys renew a longtime friendship with Louisiana’s Mike Cauley, best known for the successful exploits of his Bayou Cajun Plott Hound pack on wild hogs and on bears, both the blacks of the Northwoods of the US and Canada and the giant browns of Sweden.
Cauley primarily hunts hogs in the swamps and bayous of southeastern Louisiana where he has caught hundreds of the species over the years. He has also made three trips to Sweden to hunt the country’s huge brown bears after shipping several Plott Hounds to hunters there. One of the bears taken with Cauley-bred Plotts ranks fourth among Sweden’s largest trophy bears. Cauley’s experiences hunting brown bears in Sweden are thoroughly examined.
Discussions move to questions about why he chose hogs as his game of choice and why he chose the Plott breed over other breeds of hounds. An in-depth discussion evolves concerning the bulldog’s role in hunting hogs, what makes a good catch dog and how hounds and bulldogs are trained to work together. Cauley’s favorite bloodlines of bulldogs and curs used for catching dangerous wild boars are also explored.
Our hosts implore Cauley to describe the typical Deep South hog hunt with dogs, the type of territory he hunts and the type of equipment he uses on the hunt. Cauley also discusses the advantages and the pitfalls of using the same dogs on hogs and bears. Realizing many of the hogs Cauley catches are taken alive, additional questions emerge about how hogs are caught and what are the risks to hunter and hound. An exciting story of Trapper and the junkyard hog helps to make this inaugural episode on hog hunting one that listeners will surely enjoy.

January 13, 2025Coon Hunter Nubbin Moore
This is an episode that offers a chance for listeners to unwind, to lay aside the stresses of world news and events and to get in touch with their inner houndsman. Steve describes it as “getting at the heart of the reason I follow hounds and enjoy the houndsman lifestyle.”
Recorded at a coon hunting camp in southeastern Alabama in February, Steve and longtime friend and fellow houndsman Arnold “Nubbin” Moore drill down into the reasons they enjoy the many aspects of hunting with hounds by recounting their experiences. The episode contains a wide range of subjects including White River coon hunting stories, eating raccoons, a profile of Hank, Nubbin’s Autumn Oaks-winning Black and Tan coonhound of a lifetime, a story about a coon hunting horse, tales of their roles as peace keepers at competition events and saying goodbye to a longtime hunting friend. As the old friends recap their travels, which consist of thousands of miles hauling hounds and hunting together, there’s something in this episode for anyone that enjoys hound hunting at the most basic of its many levels.
