One of BYU’s crowning achievements came in 1984, when the Cougars went undefeated and claimed the national championship after a victory over Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. This accomplishment was historic, as BYU became the first team from outside the Power Five to win a national title in the modern era, breaking barriers for smaller programs.

Even beyond their championship season, BYU has maintained dominance through numerous conference titles in the WAC and Mountain West, and an impressive bowl record. The program’s consistent winning seasons, high national rankings, and ability to schedule and beat Power Five opponents throughout its independent years have solidified BYU’s status as a dominant force.
