49: Steve Moneghetti Pt 2

Brad starts his taper ahead of Melbourne Half, dodging old ladies with sticks, then a long run with Tom Do Canto.
Julian’s still hitting the hills, trails and forests of Ballarat before Brad examines his post-race motivations.
Brady’s still dealing with his foot niggles, but relishing the experience of taking a break.

Jack Rayner caps off a great year winning the Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff, running the 5th fastest time in Australia off a strong finishing kick. Celia Sullohern took home the silver in the women’s race https://www.runnerstribe.com/latest-news/australias-jack-rayner-wins-the-mens-commonwealth-half-marathon-championships/

Listener Paul asks about modifying marathon-specific sessions for the half as well as tips for the Melbourne Half and then Moose on the Loose attacks the lack of proper coverage for the Chicago Marathon.

The boys give their preview on the elite fields for the Melbourne Marathon, giving predictions for winners and weather conditions.

Julian continues his chat with Steve Moneghetti, starting with by summarising each of his four Olympic Marathons, how he went about researching for training and nutrition in the pre-internet era. Steve then recounts setting the World Record for the Half Marathon on his way to winning the Berlin Marathon and the logistics of getting his winnings home. Steve and Julian discuss the best age to start your first marathon, who Australia’s next big marathon runner could be and why men and women race differently. They talk about the validity of a marathon trial system, before shifting to Steve’s motivation in post-professional running and closing with the greatest race that never happened.
