100 Words Or Less: The Podcast

Jonah and I have circled the same group of friends for many years, but this was the first time we got a chance to actually sit down and get to know each other! Jonah plays guitar in the awesome band United Nations (with friend of the show Geoff Rickley), a co-host of a fun podcast with his sister called "How Did We Get Weird?" and has been a music writer for Alternative Press and Fuse's "Steven's Untitled Rock Show". Needless to say, he's been around and I was happy to dig into Cleveland hardcore, zine writing and of course, podcasting. Enjoy!

Welcome to another exciting episode of the podcast, this time with my good friend Vique Martin who is a music industry veteran who has spent her time working behind the scenes at labels like Revelation Records and currently at Pirates Press Records. She also has put out records and zines under the name Simba Records & Zine. In short, she's a lifer and I was happy to have this discussion with her. We talked about her experience being raised in the UK, loss and building confidence.

The very last in our installment of live podcasts that I did at the almighty Outbreak Fest in June of 2022 in front of a live audience. These two chats were awesome and of course, with great people involved in independent music. The first one is with Mat Kerekes from Citizen in which we discuss video games, working out and UK audiences. Then, I chat with Isa Holliday from Slow Crush as they were wrapping up a whirlwind world tour that was so ambitious I admired it from afar. We got into her background, why they love guitar pedals and a lot more.

Early 2000's emo/post-hardcore will never die! While nostalgia is a powerful drug, Ben and his band Armor For Sleep don't just rest on their laurels, they release a killer new LP and play shows around it. I am glad to welcome Ben into the fold and have deep conversations with him about putting on shows at 13 years old, how cool pop punk is and the positive and negatives of "people pleasing".

LIVE FROM OUTBREAK FEST 2022!

We have two luminaries within our scene, Walter from Quicksand/Rival Schools (and so much more) and Will Yip the producer of many of your favorite records (Title Fight, Balance and Composure, Pianos Become the Teeth and SO MUCH MORE). We had these discussions in front of a live studio audience and it was quite a fun discussion about navigating creative roadblocks, longevity in music and work ethic. Pull up a chair and enjoy!

"Like Hoobastank...but doesn't suck" are some immortal words a friend of mine said about Anberlin and I will never forget that. I was pleased as punch to tell Stephen that over our internet connection conversation (to be clear, I like Hoobastank). We get in deep with the feeling of being an outcast, the difference between "shows" and "concerts" and the business side of music. It's a wide ranging discussion and think you will find some value in here. Enjoy!

Live From Outbreak Fest 2022 we have Brendan Garrone from Incendiary & Jimmy Wizard from Higher Power coming to us LIVE and in person. It was quite a fun discussion with both of these quality human beings in which we discuss UK and US touring, foundational bands and a lot more. Dip in and enjoy!

Rise and Fall is an often overlooked, but incredibly important band to the punk and hardcore scene not only in the US but worldwide. Hailing from Belgium (you can laugh at my outro to this episode saying how much I love Swedish hardcore and then after the fact LOL'ing but deciding to leave it in), Bjorn Dossche sang for the band and I had to bring him on the show. We discussed a lot of things including the Belgian hardcore scene, US touring and keeping things comfortable. Let's get it!

Check out his new band Wrong Man!

One of my favorite skaters of all time, Geoff Rowley, is on the show this week. To say I am thrilled is an understatement. His parts in legendary skate videos like 411 and others not only got me stoked on his talent but the music he chose was always a bit different and always hit the punk/hardcore/metal side of things real hard. I knew his affinity for the music runs deep, but how deep I didn't know until now. We discuss his feelings around being a video game character, Discord Records and so much more. Enjoy the listen!
