119: Genetic Testing

Listen Later

Episode 119: Welcome back to Real Health Radio. This week, I don’t just have one guest, I have three. It’s a panel discussion involving myself, Krista Scott-Dixon, Helen Kollias, and Alaina Hardie from Precision Nutrition and we’re sticking with one topic: genetic testing. We cover a lot of ground on this show.

We discuss the basics of DNA, genes, and the genome and what these are and why they’re important. We look at many of the of terms that come up once you get into the genetic testing world. So things SNPs, polymorphism, genotype, phenotype, epigenetics and others.

We cover risk, looking at absolute risk and relative risk and how this relates to the results of genetic testing.

We talk about what we currently do and don’t know. Truthfully, right now, what we do know is pretty limited. Despite the wild claims that are often made, at this stage most of these claims are hype or about what we expect could happen in the future, they aren’t a reality right now.

Here’s what we cover in this podcast episode:

8:15: Intro to Krista Scott-Dixon and her background with genetics

9:30: Intro to Helen Kollias and her experience with genetics

10:50: Intro to Alaina Hardie and how she became interested in genetics
