147. Are You a Significance Junkie?

Listen Later

There's more than one way to accomplish your goals. I know you want me to say, "If you just do this, then everything will be fine." It's part of that drive we have to be in control of our own outcomes. Unfortunately, business just doesn't work that way. But there are some things you can do to move in the right direction.

A significance junkie is someone who shows up online or at events and consistently promises that they have the answer. They have a new secret, a new tactic, a new trick. Then they show up next month with something different.

You've probably seen those people, or maybe you've even been one of those people at some point in your career.

This is a need we all share as humans — to be significant and to matter. So don't judge it. We've all been there. It is important to take a step back and notice WHERE we do this, because trying to be certain about what we can do is never going to actually get us what we want.

We get so focused on controlling and manipulating, and in business, it can have the opposite effect of what we want. We can get lost in the numbers. We can get lost in the planning process.

We lose sight of what we're actually doing — and the most important thing in the business is you ... not a tactic or trick. When people invest in your business, they are investing in you (and your product if you're selling a physical item).

You are running the business. You ARE the business. You are significant already. (Do you know how many people talk about starting a business and then don't do it?)

You've started. You did this thing! There is courage in that. You were given dreams, ideas, and passions ... and you LISTENED. So, this significance chasing can stop.

You might need to learn new skills. You can do a course and pick up a book, but don't treat it like a lifeline. You won't be perfect overnight. When you're a significance junkie, you're hoping that the next big thing will save you.

Don't look for the answer outside of yourself. You save you. You show up. You pick yourself up.

Acknowledge how AMAZING you are for running this business in the first place, and then ask yourself: What skills do I need to make this amazing? What skills can I add to me to make this even better? That's a very different way to frame growing and scaling your business.

A business is built moment by moment and choice by choice, just like everything else in your life. Repetition is the mother of learning.

Sometimes people get lucky. Maybe they know someone who knows someone and that can make a big difference. But even then, that doesn't solve all the problems. You can know someone who knows someone, but if you're not prepared it won't matter.

Do you know about the skills that you need to be fantastic? Are you willing to make mistakes and learn from them? Are you willing to surround yourself with people who love you and are cheering you on?

If no one has told you today, remember you are amazing. You are running a business, and you deserve to make a living running that business. Go out there and just work. No tactics, no tricks, just work!
