164: The Motivation Matrix: Passion, Recognition, and Inclusivity in Nonprofit Leadership with Mijeong Kwon

Listen Later

In this episode of What the Fundraising Podcast,

This episode unfolds through a captivating exploration of various dimensions of motivation, work dynamics, and the interplay between intrinsic motivation, passion, and potential exploitation. Today's guest, Mijeong Kwon, is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Colorado Denver Business School. Her research focuses on the social dynamics of work motivation, explicitly exploring how individuals articulate their reasons for working and assess their peers based on their motivations for employment.

In her recent paper, Mijeong, alongside her colleagues, delved into the intriguing connection between a love for one's work and the perception of intrinsic motivation as a moral virtue. The study revealed that those who view intrinsic motivation as morally virtuous tend to consider working for money and recognition immoral.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Learn about "passion exploitation"
  • Challenge societal discounting of intrinsic motivations
  • Examine the moralization of work
  • Unravel the connection between intrinsic motivation and burnout
  • Learn the leadership's role in motivation acknowledgment
  • Reflect on the multifaceted nature of motivation
