199: Jaryd Clifford returns
This week is sponsored by New Balance, where you can check out their full range of running shoes including the recently released and reviewed Vongo v5.
Brad takes it easy as he adjusts to life in lockdown.
The Pre Classic in Eugene, Oregon held several star-studded fields, with Stewy McSweyn running 3:48.40, placing second behind Jakob Ingebrigsten in the Bowerman Mile. Oli Hoare set a personal best of 3:51.63 to place 7th on the Australian all-time list while Matt Ramsden set a season best of 3:53.97.
Adelaide Marathon was held and taken out by Jacob Cocks in 2:22:44 and Tara Palm in 2:51:32. For the half marathon Bryn Nicholls in 1:09:55 and Belinda Richardson in 1:22:01 were the winners while Isaac Heyne & Caitlin Adams were the winners of the 10km.
Kenenisa Bekele is listed to run the Berlin Marathon on 26th September then plans to back it up with the New York City Marathon on 7th November.
This week’s listener questions ask about how to go about adding double runs into your routine while Moose looks into getting a lactate threshold testing machine.
Jaryd Clifford continues from last week’s episode out from the start of the Paralympic Games, where he plans to take on the 5000m, 1500m and the marathon. Jarryd unpacks what happened at the marathon event in Penrith unfolded, going from Run the Tan the day prior to pacing his teammate Michael Roeger for his marathon run with a season of 1500m races, how he approached that race without long runs and changing the pacing plan to stick with Michael when he needed it and then finishing to post the classification World Record, followed by the recovery process afterwards.
Jarryd talks about who he regards as the best para runner of all time and where Australia stands in the world and then goes into what to expect from running the marathon in Tokyo and how to approach the expected heat, the photoshoot for the recent Nike promo, the curated Spotify playlist and explains the dynamic between vulnerability and strength.
To round out this conversation Jarryd gives insight as to how Australian Para-sports is set up in terms of funding and how it fits in with Jarryd’s support structure.
