#32: Nicholas Howland: Vulnerability is a Superpower

Listen Later

Dr. Nicholas Howland is a highly qualified and trusted board-certified plastic surgeon affiliated with prestigious organizations like the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons. Raised in Murray, Utah, he developed a passion for the arts during piano lessons and honed his appreciation for the human form while serving as the lead interpreter at the Hermitage Museum during a church mission in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Howland's educational journey led him to graduate cum laude from the University of Utah and gain early acceptance to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he conducted significant research in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Throughout his residency, he trained at renowned medical institutions and contributed extensively to the field, establishing himself as a highly qualified and respected plastic surgeon.

Nick shares his personal journey of strengthening his relationship with his father by adopting a transformative perspective: assuming that his father, like anyone else, was doing his best. He acknowledges past challenges in their relationship but reveals that by choosing to view his father's actions and choices through a lens of empathy and compassion, he witnessed a remarkable shift in their connection. This shift allowed Nick to appreciate his father's efforts and sacrifices in a new light, ultimately transforming their relationship and reminding us all of the power of assuming the best in others as a pathway to understanding, forgiveness, and love.

In a heartfelt conversation, Nick bravely shares his emotionally charged journey, emphasizing the pivotal role his supportive friends played in helping him overcome adversity. He passionately argues for the importance of like-minded men coming together to uplift each other, dispelling the misconception that vulnerability equates to weakness. His story serves as a powerful reminder that by sharing our struggles and supporting one another, we can bounce back from life's hardships, transcending societal stereotypes and embracing our authentic selves.
