It can be hard enough to encourage shy kids to participate when we are teaching in our classroom, but throw in technical difficulties, a bad internet connection, and a lack of the subtle non-verbal communication we usually rely on in the form of a smile or a wink, and it becomes even harder to connect with and encourage these children to engage.
