    Episode #594 January 12, 2018 –

We've had many listeners at the beginning of the year that have decided what they want to move to but are looking for resources and how-to-info.

    This Week's Questions:

How can I move from teacher to paid speaker?

Can I package my presentation on forgiveness as a course?

Dan, I need a music related idea to make money while my growing my band's success.

How can I communicate that I'm a forward thinker when I've been working in the dry cleaning business?

How do you get a reluctant spouse to support efforts in a side business or calling if they have a different vision of security and work than you do?

    Good News

  • I am responsible!

    Episode #593 January 05, 2018 –

We all have two choices in life: accept life as it is or accept responsibility to change it.

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

    Questions:
    • What are some examples of a large financial shovel?
    • Can having goals in your 7 life areas help with my depression?
    • Should I leave my job 3 years before my retirement package starts?
    • I have two degrees in areas I'm not interested in, I don't want to ever work for an employer again, but I need to make money now.

    Resources for Young Farmers

    • A farmer who helps you qualify for a loan through an apprenticeship

But instead of asking for donations to fund his missionary work, he went as an English teacher and paid for everything on his own and was actually able to do more missionary work because he was less restricted as a teacher.

Take Responsibility For Your Own Success

36:46 – One listener shares that he has two degrees but doesn't want to work in either of those fields. He has lost jobs and doesn't want to work for an employer again and doesn't know what to do because he needs to make money fast. Dan says:

  • Is Ambition Honorable or Selfish?

As an end of the year wrap up, Dan looks at some questions he is asked when we start talking about setting goals:

Should you be afraid of your desires, ambition and your drives?

When are you just being selfish – and when are you really in the groove to become all God intended for you?

What does it mean to be "crowned with glory and honor?"

Plus, Dan takes a look at what happens when you retire.

    Quotation:

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.Langston Hughes, 1902 – 1967 Tweet This

    Timestamped Notes:

1:30 – The first Podcast we have record of doing was in December 2007 and Dan hasn't missed one since!

3:00 — Dan encourages us all to not be afraid of thinking big and letting the world know that they want to achieve great things. Consider your goals and ambitions the way you want to make the world a better place.

7:24 — Elvis Presley song says "Ambition is a dream with a V-8 engine."

8:10 — Dan explores the difference between ambition and greed. Ambition will take you beyond talent and resources to achieve success.

10:10 — Dan shares a few of his goals for 2018, including a book, What Is Your Strangest Secret?

11:15 — Now the time to be clear on your goals. Dan takes us through the 7 areas that you should set goals in for your life. It's not just about setting a goal to make more money.

The 7 Areas of Goal Setting To Maximize Success

11:45 — Financial – Don't be afraid to set a financial goal that may be a stretch. If you expect to make more money, you may be surprised. Perhaps you start a side business.

13:55 — Physical — You can buy time by being healthier.

14:38 — The leading cause of death – retirement. Dan explores the reasons people die: no friends, no money, no purpose and how retirement contributes to all three of those.

18:50 — Set a goal for your family life. What do you want to do to be a better parent, grandparent, wife or husband?

19:26 — Spirituality – What do you want to do that goes beyond yourself?

20:07 — Social — Take a look at the book, How To Win Friends and Influence People and consider the things you can do to improve in this area. It may be just to smile more!

21:40 — Career goals should be a reflection of the life you want to live.

[spp-timestamp time="21:50″] — Dan shares another goal for 2018: to do more coaching. He has intentionally carved out more time to provide personal coaching. Find out more at https://www.48days.com/coaching/

We have a variety of questions, success stories and helpful resources that will help you find or develop passion in your work and your life — from the 17-year-old looking to take college classes outside her primary interests to the 49-year-old still searching to define his talents, skills and interest and the millennials in between who are looking for ways to pay student loans.

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

    Questions:
    • I took your advice and was able to leave my job in 12 months.
    • Should our 17-yr-old daughter take college classes outside her primary interests?
    • With a salary of around $40,000 a year I feel completely stuck, and like the only way out is homelessness. (Tom Peters – the most important business advice you'll ever hear.)
    • Emily shares free college and career guides
    • I have no clearly identifiable talents or skills. No clear purpose or strong interest in any one area.

    Plus good news and more.

    Cliff Feightner poem:

When you finally get your degreeDo you post it for all to seeDoes what you possessOnly serve to impressAnd get from most a "whoopie"

    Good News

7:30 – Good News this week:

    • A man who buys every toy in Goodwill for the children who shop there to get one free.
    • Someone who helped develop a way to ship gifts and packages to homeless people.
    • Folks who are leaving snacks for delivery drivers to ease this crazy time of year for them.
    • A child who bought blankets for the homeless instead of getting a new XBox.

[spp-timestamp time="13:24″] – A success story of a fourth grade teacher who moved into financial coaching full time and is now giving back by offering the first 30 days of his membership site to help you get out of debt for just 48 cents. Click here and use code 48DAYS.

    Broadening Your Horizons

15:50 – The father of a 17-year-old who is being homeschooled asked Dan if he should encourage his daughter to take entrepreneurial classes and those not necessarily connected to her interests. Dan's advice: Broaden your horizons before you narrow too quickly. Most noteworthy remember that you shouldn't go to college just to have a piece of paper so someone will give you a job.

    College and Debt

19:30 – Dan has gotten a lot of response from the man who had a master's degree and lives in a homeless shelter. The most recent from a man making $40,000/year and working side jobs but can't pay off his college debt and is sleeping on his parent's couch. He says: "going to college set me up for failure. I should have self-taught myself."

26:45 – Dan recommendation: find a creative way to generate income. He shares some success stories of folks in the 48 Days Community who have created a side business, including a retired pastor and his wife who are selling shoes on Amazon and generated $200,000 in profit.

[spp-tweet tweet="If you're only looking at a 'regular job,' you're only looking at 5% of the opportunities to make money."]

[spp-timestamp time="30:22″] – Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence, shares in Tim Farris' book, Tribe of Mentors his advice for the smart, driven college student.

    1. "Good manners pay off big time. Being civil and decent and kind is the bed rock of career success as well as personal fulfillment."
    2. Be a superstar, all-pro listener.
    3. Read.
    Love Your Job

[spp-timestamp time="32:13″] – Dan shares the story of a doorman in Chicago who has served well for 22 years because he loves interacting with people. He has developed personal skills to make him distinct. Click here to check out the video of him talking about why he loves his job.

    Resources

36:17 – Emily Sorenson with the Center for School, College and Career Resources, shares a myriad of resources and guides. See the resource section below for a full list of link.

    Selling Online

38:04 – A follow-up question from a pastor Dan featured a few months ago who was looking for ways to pay for his PhD. He now has two e-books and is looking for the best way to sell them online. His question: should he sell on Amazon or on his own website. Dan's answer: Both!

    Developing Passion

42:03 – Dan shares a heartbreaking story from a man who has been looking for work he loves since 2003, having had 11 jobs and 3 professional licenses. As a result, he feels like a misfit in the marketplace. He says he has no clearly identifiable talents or skills and no clear purpose or strong interest in any one area. Dan's recommendations:

[spp-tweet tweet="Hoping and praying are not enough. You have to have a clear plan of action."] [spp-tweet tweet="Passion is not something that just shows up. It's something that can be developed. Decide to do something. Learn how to do it well, and passion will develop as you do that with excellence. "]

  • I can double my income but my family will suffer!
    Episode #590 December 15, 2017 —

In this week's Podcast, we zone in on our goal setting with a great question from a listener who wants to know if he should push forward in 2018 to double his income knowing that his family life will suffer. We take a look at the 48 Days Goal Setting Workbook that includes setting goals for seven different areas of your life, not just career. Money is not how we should define success and therefore it should not lead our goal setting.

We also explore ways that this listener (and others) can meet his income goals without sacrificing the goals he has for his family and the other areas of his life.
