The come down after a high.
Last week was a good week; I filmed a pilot, met with a potential new agent and sent a bunch of TV pitches off.
This week’s been a little more trying and I know that’s just part of the game, but I often forget that after a high, there’s a little low and that’s ok. I think it’s meant to happen, it’s a time to regroup, heal, ground and let the good stuff settle in. But being an A-type shark (my friend Jad always says that I’m like a shark and I would die if I stopped moving), it’s really hard for me to slow down, to be ok with the stillness and calm that comes off the back of a win. In some weird warped way, my mind see it as a failure.
So here I am, today, choosing to celebrate the win, sit in it and enjoy the stillness of this week. I’m about to meet a friend and go for a walk around the reservoir, do yoges and breathwork later in the day then do a face mask and watch a Pedro Pascal movie tonight. It’s what I call a “Lola day” time to reset, ground and do all the things that make me feel mentally and physically clear.
When I feel clear, I understand the importance of stillness after a busy time, I remember that there’s always a time of quiet after business in the creative world. I’ve written 11 books and after every book publicity tour I would crash and burn; I’d be tired but I’d miss the business of full schedules of interviews, TV segments, launch parties. Overtime, I learnt to enjoy the “come down” by connecting back into what makes me feel clear; yoga, movement, breath work, cooking a healthy meal, going to the movies, seeing a live band, watching other people live their passions. And then, in those quieter times, there would be a sense of ease and clarity and that’s where I’d find the inspiration or idea for the next project.
So here’s to choosing to love the come down after a creative high. Who knows what creating that space might bring in next…
