Welcome back to the LA Actor Diary!
I AM AN ACTOR
This week I saw my therapist and and this is the sentence he got me to write down; I am an Actor, and gave me homework; for one month I am to live this mantra, to fully embrace being an actor.
You see, self doubt creeps in more often then I’d like to admit, and during our therapy session this past week. Terry (my therapist) said; “There’s a part of you that doesn’t believe in yourself as an actor.” Tough pill to swallow, but he was right, I didn’t.
Being an Aussie in LA means we constantly undersell ourselves because of the tall poppy syndrome that’s baked into our culture. Put plainly, this means that if you celebrate your wins too much you’ll be cut down. And American’s literally have no concept of the idea, at all. It’s absurd to them, and I kind of love it. It’s taken a lot of getting used to but it really means that you’ve got to kick that self doubt to the curb. It’s the only way to thrive in America.
So with all that said, back to my awesome therapist Terry, he said; “Lola, you need to see yourself as an actor, and nothing else. You’re an actor with an awesome podcast. You’re an actor who’s written a bunch of books. You’re an actor who knows heaps about nutrition and yoga. You’re an actor.”
So here goes: I am an actor.
